During lunch I stopped by one of my local Thrifts. This place usually has a pretty big selection of computer hardware, but console stuff is always kind of iffy.

I start walking the electronic aisles and the first thing I see looks like a sega Saturn multi-tap. I have no idea if there is such a thing but it was a small black box with a bunch of ports that said "Sega Saturn" on the top. It was $2, go I grabbed it. Next to that was a 6 button Genesis controller for 79 cents. I picked that up as well. Next to that there were some more controllers. One was a NES one that was red and blue with a joystick and had 2 controller ports (it plugged into both ports I guess) and had a 1/2 player switch. $3, but ah okay. Next to it was a Genesis "competition" joystick -- had a little joystick and a bunch of buttons, and it was $7. Too high for me. In the computer was a Commodore 128 for $3 which made me excited (I've been looking for one for Icbrkr) but then I noticed a lot of the keys had been glued into place and wouldn't move up or down. In the glass case up front there were a few NES games, mostly commons.

As I got to the front counter, I looked in my hands and saw that I was holding about $20 worth of stuff that I was never going to use and I could care less about. I already have all the controllers I could ever need, and a C128 that was screwed. I ended up putting down the whole pile, and walked out empty-handed.

While shopping, you ever got in one of those moods where you wonder why the heck you're buying all this stuff?

usually every time I walk into a thrift shop. The thrift shops here had incredibly overpriced stuff, and its all sold as is. Why pay $10-$20 for a genesis as is without any cables or anything, when u can buy one elsewhere ready to play and tested for $15.

All the thrifts in this are like that. I've traveled half the freakin city b/c of it. (Miami, FL)

I'm going to start doing yard sales on Sunday. Something new to me.

Oh yeah. I mean, I look at the student loan bills, look at what I still owe on my credit card, look at how many games I have currently have and I wonder why I still go out. I usually justify it by saying that I'll find some rare item that I'd never find again, or that I'll find some rare item I already have that I can resell. Usually though, I find some mediocre to decent items I don't have and I end up buying them. I have no willpower. Just today, I told myself I wasn't going to buy anything, but I ended up buying Exodus for 10 bucks and Fantasy Zone (NES) for 5 bucks. Not bad, but I certainly shouldn't have spent the money.

Sometimes. When I do I cool down and stop collecting for awhile, then when I get back to it i'm as fresh as ever. I'm not actually that big on collecting games, mainly because its pretty costly and, well, I'm in college :o. I have the most fun collecting video game store displays and promotional material.

Within the last few months I've started just putting things back. Too many cheap books from Goodwill, too many garbage items.

I would have picked up the Saturn multitap and the genny controller.

Saturn Multitaps aren't very common at all. Despite being an R3, I've never seen one.

I also snag any official controller that is less than $1. Typically, they are the number 1 compenent that goes bad on a system, and it never hurts to have a backup.

Everything else I would have left behind.

Yes, a very bad cycle. I do the same thing. At times I just want to kill myself after I buy something and then realize that I am probably never going to use it. But then my conscious and wallet make up and I buy some more stuff.

Thing is, in my area, seems as if everyone has a loose Sega Saturn system for 5.00. I CAN'T STOP FINDING THEM! And you know what, everytime I find one, I pick it up and buy it. Well, around the 6-7th one I started asking myself WHY do I always buy these and just let them sit around? I don't have an answer yet, but I keep buying them and hoarding them like a packrat.

Well if you have extra cash, and you already have the item, just get it to sell it on ebay to make some more money I guess. Or trade it here at DP to people who need it. I have been passing stuff up too lately. just last week someone had a bunch of nes games including 2 mairo bros 3. I didnt need them though, but they were only a dollar. i should have just bought them then sold them on ebay for like 5 bucks each. meh. At least i broke out of my habit where I used to buy every game everwhere.

Lots of times I pick up some stupid crap and if I get to the front and the line is long I'll leave it.

Yup - used to all the time. I fixed that problem by only collecting stuff I really like or want to play. Just because it's video game related and only a buck, doesn't mean I have to buy it. With this mindset, I can pass over fifty random $1 controllers that I don't actually need and buy one $50 game that I really want instead.

I tend to pass things up and regret it not much later. I'm an incurable cheap-ass. Two recent examples:

1. I went to a garage sale, and they had 2-3 PS2 games. I asked the lady if she had anything else, and she said "Yeah, we have some Super Nintendo games. My son doesn't want to get rid of them, but he needs to!" She brought out a full shoebox and another box with controllers in it. $1 each.

Being the cheapass that I am, instead of giving her $25 and walking away with all of them, I picked through and found the rare and desirable games (Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, etc.) and a few I'd been curious about (Jim Power, TMNT) and left the rest. I bought 7 games for $7 and left.

When I got in the car, wy wife asked why I didn't just get them all. "I dunno." She said that, for that price, I really should. I brushed off her suggestion. "Nah." I should have listened.

About an hour after getting home, I got out the DP Heartbreak Guide (the older online SNES version), and noticed at least one R6-7 (Ninja...something or other. By Irem.) and several others around that level that I had passed over. Plus my wife and daughter wanted Monopoly.

I drove back, and (of course) someone else bought the rest.

2. Another garage sale. My brother called me and told me some guy had a whole bunch of Xbox games for $5 each. I drove there, and all he had left was a wrestling game and Oddworld. As I was pondering whether or not to get Oddworld, the kids at that houde brought out a Playstation, a stack of 7-8 boxed games, and a CD wallet with another 25 games in it. No sports titles, BTW. They wanted $25 for all of it. I passed it up, and bought Oddworld instead. I'm not sure why I did that. Again, I drove back later, and (again) it was gone.

You would think I would learn someday. And it's not like I passed up the Playstation stuff because I had too much already, or because they are doubles. I didn't even have a PS1, and I STILL don't have a PS1. It's pretty much the only system I lack, and I could have had one, plus a good headstart on a game collection (30+ titles) for $25.

*sigh*

Yup.All the time at the flea market..I'll find a decent deal,I'll already have what I'm buying..
and I wouldn't be able to make any money on it selling it.
Sometimes I pass on it,just placing it all down...I've been passing a lot more lately.

Saturday..
I found a complete(out of Box) Dreamcast for $20.00 with a few common games.
I don't need it..I have to many already..I can't sell them.
The seller had a bag in hand ... I placed it all back down on the table and walked away.

Ninja Spirit wasn't on that system. Three Ninjas Kick back is pegged at a 6, that's a Sony release, but you're thinking of The Ninja Warriors, by Taito. Wow, didn't know that got released for the SNES. Sorry you passed that one up!

My mistake. It wasn't Ninja something, it was Dino City. I took notice at the time because it says "Irem" on the end label.
I don't know why I was thinking Ninja.

Anyway, It's listed as an R6. Not earthshaking or anything, but a shame to pass up for $1.

Consumer frenzy happens. Should have grabbed that Saturn multitap, though. It lets you get > 2 players with Guardian Heroes.

Yeah, I pass up things all the time. Mostly due to lack of funds and space. If Im not gonna use it or sell it, I don't buy it. Simple as that. Although If I saw a box of SNES games for a dollar I'd just buy 'em all! :D

This is why I have cut down my trips to thrifts. I have too many controllers and extra stuff I never use as it is. When I shop, I always think hard about what I am buying because usually if I buy one thing, there are three or four other things I'll pick up. It's an all or nothing situation.

I don't just do this with used video games...i ALWAYS do it anywhere. Especially Best buy. I might walk into a store like that and pick up 5 different things, but by the time i leave, put them all down.

as for flea markets/goodwill....i don't just buy anything...i've passed up alot of $1.50-$3 games for nes/snes/genny that i didn't have just because i still have like 10 games at home i haven't even played yet...i kind of enjoy pacing my collection.

be proud of yourself for putting them down, you have to draw the line somewhere.

(though i would have bought that 6button off you)

Dude, that's awesome, it perfectly describes some of my thrift experiences. I'll pile up this random shit cause ya know...it's only a buck or two, then I have almost 30 dollars worth of shit. I thrift very often and occasionally when I hit a ton of places and come home empty handed I always wonder what the hell motivates me to keep doing this.

Haven't been by the thrift in a while since I'm saving money. Trying not to think of what I've been missing LOL
