Le Geek reminded me, in AdamG's rooma dooma thread, that I haven't updated everyone on the status of the game room at my new pad (I'm pretty sure I've shown some folks the photos, just not everyone), so I thought I'd post this. For those interested in the old game room, crammed into the tiniest bedroom (barely even 11 x 11 feet) of my old rental house), check that out here (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/about/room/). But now, here are some before-and-after comparisons of the old and the new. Unless otherwise noted, old is on the left, new is on the right.

With the lights on. Admittedly, the "after" shot was taken not long after I first started moving into the new place, but it gives you an idea of how much more room there is.

With the lights off.

Where the systems are. In the Escape Pod, some systems had to go into the bottom compartment of the entertainment center because there simply wasn't room for all of them to be on display. In the new game room, with the addition of the second steel shelf unit, there's room for almost every unique system in my collection - and it's all hooked up and ready to go.

http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/about/room/video.jpg http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-3/qbert.jpg http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-7/riterakk.jpg
Where the equipment is. Everything in the Escape Pod had to be shoehorned into a single shelf unit because that was all that would fit into the room. The second shelf unit allows me to spread things out better, for a more logical arrangement and better ventilation for all of the equipment. (And I can't even get it all into the same photo now. That's how much more room there is.)

http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/about/room/odysseys.jpg http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-5/closet.jpg
Where stuff is stored. In the old game room, these Odyssey pong systems wound up stacked on top of the equipment rack, out in the open - it didn't really look too great. In the new room, there's a closet with enough space to accomodate boxed and spare hardware.

http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/about/room/bed-view.jpg http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-8/kickfull.jpg
The rest of the room. The Escape Pod was, let's face it, a spare bedroom with a game room squeezed in between the cracks. The new game room is nothing but the game room. There's room for at least one arcade game (and I'm hoping to get a second one in there soon). There's room to bring in extra chairs. There's room for people to come in and play.

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-1/deckview.jpg http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-1/deckvew2.jpg
The difference between the old place and the new: this is the view from my deck at the new place, looking northwest (left) and north-northeast (right). The view at the old place: the brick wall of the house right next to us.

We were strongly discouraged from driving nails or hanging stuff on the walls at the rental house. Not that we didn't do it anyway, mind you, but it was frowned upon. Here we can put up whatever the heck we want - the game room features Hubble Telescope pictures, the history of Doctor Who from 1963-96, room for more posters, and even this dandy sign on the door that my wife picked up from a gift store for a wacky price (lower than $10). It's our house. We can do whatever the heck we want with it.

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-8/enter.jpg
The new place is also out in the country - very little noise, the better part of a mile between our place and the nearest neighbors, and yet not so far out that we don't have cable internet, running water, mail, and all of that good stuff.

One of my favorite things about the new place.

The one thing I miss the most about the old place.

Wow, great pictures and commentary! It's great to be able to spread out a bit. When you're ready for that second arcade machine, let me know. :)

Considering my newfound proclivity for grilling burgers at the new place, spreading out is something I'm doing a little too much of lately. LOL :-P

When you're ready for that second arcade machine, let me know. :)
If you're looking for a place to hide that Q*Bert cab, I volunteer. :D

What's with all the VCRs???

I was just going to post the same question! Maybe it's to watch all the different Star Wars versions on VHS at once?
:hmm:

Anyway, how much did the lighting cost to put together?

I used to do international standards conversion (PAL to NTSC and vice versa, or SECAM to...well, you get the idea) as a side business, and still occasionally do it on private request. I've also archived VHS to DVD-R for clients before.

Anyway, how much did the lighting cost to put together?
$50 total.

What's the history on that Sega Star Trek Poster PDF?

Oh and I've seen the pics before, cool stuff! Not seen the outside view before, looks nice & peaceful! No cars going BOOM BOOM down the street every 5-10 minutes, must be a nice place indeed!

What's the history on that Sega Star Trek Poster PDF?
Uh....won it on eBay for some ridiculously low sum and put it in a frame? LOL That's really my story, and I'm sticking to it. If I'm not mistaken, John Hardie said he's never seen one before either, and if John hasn't seen one before, that's as good as a big "OMG!!1!! R@RE!!!" stamp in the corner for me. I honestly have no idea how many were made or where they all got to; I had more than a few offers for it at OKGE this year, where I was showing it off (and on the Doctor Who backglass as well - go check the OKGE pics thread in the Events & Gatherings forum for a few shots of that one). The "NOT FOR SALE" sign attached to the frame didn't particularly deter anyone!

I love that ST:SOS poster though. It kinda meets all of my interests in the middle quite nicely. :D

I'd ponder a guess to say it has more to do with the arcade version than the home versions but still, I think it's quite cool. Some of the 2600 Sega titles had combo instruction manuals/posters, but are not as large. I've had thoughts of framing them as well. Would love something of that size though. :)

What's the fine print say at bottom?

STAR TREK indicates trademark of Paramount Pictures Corporation. (C) 1983 Sega Enterprises, Inc. All rights reserved.
There's nothing on the back of it, and it's a fairly heavy paper stock, so I'd say your guess about it being a promo piece for the arcade game is the best theory so far.

Some much more recent photos - no before and after this time, these are all from the new place.

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-10/marquees.jpg
As you might imagine, the wiring running behind the equipment in the new room is cable soup. I’ve been finding interesting ways to try to cover much of this up. (And yes, I do need to dust off my 7800 and my TI. And bag some of those LPs. :embarrassed: ) Gotta love that Alan Parsons vinyl!

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-10/cube-ps1.jpg
The Gamecube is the newest adoptee in my collection; to its right, the US and Japanese PSones are dwarfed by the enormous double PS1 joystick. Because of the way the Bagman marquee was made, it's actually hanging from the crossbeam of the shelf above it.

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-10/2600ball.jpg
A 4-switch 2600 woody (thank you Flack!) is awaiting active duty next to the Odyssey2 trackball. The shelf below is used for storage of odds ‘n’ sods, and is hidden by some large circuit boards. I’ve gotten so much mileage out of these circuit boards over the years, and they’re not even game related. That story’s coming up in a future Invading Spaces (http://www.digitpress.com/columns/invadingspaces.htm) column. (Also, big thanks to Crossbow - somehow, somewhere, while preparing for OKGE this year, he still managed to fix my Vader 2600.) Behind the trackball lurks my NES, and a bag full of GB/GBC goodness.

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-10/silver.jpg
This A/V selector is used for systems like the ‘cube and the PSones which output baseband audio/video. And you can even hit the “fade out” button and really annoy me if I’m playing something at the moment...if you can get past the light cycle and the army of Daleks. (You may or may not have noticed that I'm a sci-fi toy collector too.)

http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/thumb-10/stick-cu.jpg
Just another closeup on the PS1 double joystick. The controls on this object of beauty are so old school and feel so good for retro compilations – I almost can’t go back to a standard PS1 controller anymore. 8-)

That's a damn nice room. Once I get a place of my own, I hope to do something of a similar caliber. Keep up the good work!

Very nice setup. I've never seen a game room setup with lights like that before. I'll definately consider that when I get a place of my own.

Man, the lights rule. That is truely an impressive collection. I'm now gonna consider lights for the table that holds the two tvs for my insignificant little living-room-with-some-games setup LOL

Oh, and thinking back on the VCRs a bit - not all of them are in use as VCRs! Some of them are dead-tape-mech machines that I just hook up the RF selector boxes to, in order to get baseband A/V out to my amp. Also, a feature that I don't brag on nearly enough is that I drive the audio from my RF games through a stereo reverb. Cheesy as that sounds, it adds a strange (and adjustable!) depth to the audio that sounds great in surround sound - the room sounds like a freakin' stadium. You just haven't lived until you've played Yars' Revenge in surround. LOL
