Looks like the time has come.
First, I can confirm the release of Madden 2005 -- I've seen it in my local Toys R Us. And it's amazing how good the game looks despite the age of the hardware by now.....
Next week FIFA 2005 by EA Sports comes out in both the US and Europe, a few days apart.
I've checked numerous sites and can't find ANY other games planned for release in either the US or Europe.
There's still some planned PSX releases in Japan, but they look like re-releases, part of Koei's Classic Gaming series or the PS One Book series. Nothing new, and nothing going past the end of the year.
So, after about nine years, the long run of the PlayStation is over with.

Ten years if it makes it just past December (the PlayStation first appeared in December 1994)!
Hmm...who's to say this isn't a temporary lull? I doubt anybody's going to release a PlayStation game to get swallowed up by the Christmas season, though as you say you should see SOMETHING on the charts.
1994 to 2004...take it back from 1984 to 1994. I'd say the difference in game systems from '94 to '04 has been much smaller than that from '84 to '94.

But still the progress that video games have gone though is just AMAZING! From little blobs picking up other little blobs to ultra realistic graphics in 20 years.... amazing.

Well, Europe has had quite a few titles come out recently (CT Special Forces 3, Toys, Dance: UK Extra Trax, etc.). Hip Interactive, Phoenix Games and possibly Midas Interactive are still releasing games. I'm almost positive JAP games are coming out at a rapid clip as well.
As for the US, though, it looks like FIFA 2005 will be the last. Santa Claus saves the Earth and Soccer Kid are not officially cancelled (Telegames) but they're "questionable" releases now.

Yep. The thing, though, is that from 1984 to 1994 you went from games that vaguely had gameplay to complex RPGs (though THAT change happened in the space of a few years), games with asthetics to rival the best talents anywhere (Darkstalkers comes to mind :3 ), and games that had real physics. In the last ten years, we really haven't seen that great an improvement in immersion in the 3D graphics department over what System Shock and Marathon provided, for example. Physics don't change much. Though 3D graphics were extremely primitive in this time frame, they were still "good enough," yes?

Very true. Personally I can't stand old 3D games. 2D I can stand easily, but old 3D just looks so UGLY to me these days.

Well, there's the so-called "2.5D" with sprites in lieu of polygons; that often works quite well. Then there's early 3D...yeah, Konami's Polystars M2 3DO game doesn't really excite me that much either :P
I think G-Darius and the Panzer Dragoon games are neat, though. Phantasy Star Online, for whatever reason, really reminds me in its graphics of these early 3D games (just running at a higher resolution), but I like the effect.

Well there are no more games that are slated for release by any major players in the US Market. I know of a few completed games, just not released being held by A company. Those have a small small chance at release still, and were working on avenues to try to get them out there for release.
Id so like a stupid platformer over FIFA 05 a game that I can say with ease that I will not play.

Tragic. There are SO many retro compilations from Japan that would need only a bare minimum of localization for the US market.
Farewell, PS1, my dear old retrogaming workhorse. To think, I got into this machine in '99 thinking "Hey, maybe it's time I stepped into the modern day," and sure, I did get some "modern" games here and there, but what I really fell in love with was the depth and breadth of the PS1's retro library, especially once I got into imports. Even the current generation can't match that.
The good news is...I have a pile of working PS1 consoles and a well-stocked retrogaming larder. And I plan to feast on the classics through this venerable old machine for many years to come. :)

I may not like the company Sony, but one can't deny the quantity of wonderful third party games on the system. In the last couple weeks, I've really been getting back into PlayStation, largely due in part to the fact that I realized I have exactly 99 PSX games, and I'm trying to decide what should be # 100... I also acquired my second and third PSX systems this past summer, and they were in such nice condition that I couldn't bear to sell either. I take good care of my systems, but there's always the possibility that one could crap out on me. I wouldn't be surprised if my PSX collection is my most valuable collection due to the fact that I only have more games for the NES, and with games like Suikoden 2, Valkyrie Profile, Tales of Destiny 2, and many, many other valuable games, that's quite a bit of cash I'd have if I ever sold (which I won't :) ). One of my goals is to finish off my US-released RPG collection. I got a good number, but there are still quite a few good ones I'm missing (Persona 2, Tales of Destiny, and Legend of Mana just to name a few).
So yes... it's the end of an amazing legacy. I know I will always look fondly upon my great collection for the system.

I was actually just thinking of the US PlayStation life -- late 95 to late 04, so that's why I said 9 years.
And it looks like Sony stopped making PS One's eariler this year, though I can still find new ones in many stores.
For those curious, here is what I complied from several online lists for upcoming PlayStation releases:
North America
10/12 FIFA Soccer 2005
Japan
10/14 Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Banue Yuugi (Koei Teiban Series)
Kouryuuki (Koei Teiban Series)
10/21 Momotarou Dentetsu V (PSOne Books)
10/28 Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke (PSOne Books)
Europe
10/15 FIFA Football 2005
So, it ends on a sports game.....that's not too bad. I always thought the SNES and Genesis died weakly on a Frogger port, and te N64's last game was a sports game as well.

i'm quite positive that at least midas will bring us even more games, although, all their ps2 games could easily have been ps1 games so maybe they really stopped making ps1 games LOL

The last European Megadrive game was FIFA '98 (released late '97), so EA do have a history of supporting consoles way past their prime.
so now that the playstation is officially dead in the US, what was the final game count?

1270 sumptin.... I need to recheck the numbers and pull some edutainment titles out and make sure that stuff doesnt get double counted (in the case of re-releases and some other items).

When a system can say that they made a decent run at the AES console for longevity, that's saying something. Official retirement, but highly doubtful that we'll see that original PSX logo disappearing anytime soon :)

Does anyone have screenshots of the last games released? I'd like to see how far they got graphics-wise on the system. Google doesn't yield any results for FIFA 2005 and Madden 2005 :/

If we're absolutely positive FIFA 2005 is the last-ever PS1 title, may get it. But watch me buy it and then have MLB 2006 come out a week later :D

Ummm, we're talking about the Playstation here...unless there was an N64 reference I missed :D
Regarding Yetisport Deluxe, I couldn't find that at the U.S. version of Amazon.com and the only copy they have lilsted of Duel Masters: Sempai Legends is for the GBA, though they have a PS2 game listed as simply Duel Masters...so I assume these two games aren't getting a U.S. release.

I was just checking some threads to see if there had been any PS1 releases made this year...I guess not. Since Madden & FIFA's 2005 offerings appear to be the last releases for the system (in the U.S. anyway) I'm ordering copies of each...even though I'm not really a soccer fan. It's kind of nice to have the last-released game of a system. Interestingly enough, the last Dreamcast game was a hockey title...and I'm not into that sport either. I guess the last XBox title will probably be a basketball fan, another sport I'm not big on... :D

Well, DDR Konamix came out in Greatest Hits in 2005 in the US, so there's one US release for the variant collecters.

Hmmm...at first I posted here I would likely get that, too...but have erased that because I now feel I won't. Since it was basically a re-issue (just under slightly different packaging) I really don't consider it one of the last releases. Now if the Konamix version had been released for the first time this year, that would have been different...

Here in NZ, no new PS1 titles have been coming out since around, 2002 or 2003, and even then they were those terrible budget titles.
Playstation, your life has done us proud.

So, is anything actually still on the radar right now? Man...incredible. Here we are talking about the SUCCESSOR to the PS2 being around the corner, and the PS2 being really dated, but original PSX games are still coming out...crazy.

Well, my copy of FIFA Soccer 2005 arrived today so I now have the last U.S. release. A more intriguing question for me now might be...what was the last Playstation game released in the U.S. that wasn't a sequel or part of an ongoing sports franchise like FIFA or Madden? And what was the last U.S. release that wasn't a sports game period...whether it was a sequel or not?

Last week I picked up NFL Game Day 2005 and FIFA Soccer 2005 at my local Best Buy for $4.99 each. I got them for the same reason you did, I figured they were some of the last PS1 games to come out. I do play sports games much.
