After weeks and weeks of it not beinging in stock (even though it was advertised as in stock) I finally recieved my Gameking. I have to say it's a pretty cool wee machine! It's not too difficult to see, it pisses on the Game.com for that. The sound's pretty loud and full as well, with some great wee tunes for some of the games. The box is much, much nicer than anything Ninty has come up with - it looks really professional. And the dummy shoulder buttons really charm me, I don't know why. Maybe the cheesey chinese cheek of it (excuse the alliteration!).

As far as the games go...Well, if they're not shmups they're platformers mainly but a couple of goodies are in there! There's even a Mario rip off called Caro! Although, I have to say, it could do with a bit more variety in the games department. A puzzle game or two wouldn't go amiss.

All in all, I'm pretty chuffed with my new console. Did anybody else order one at all? I'd like to know! :)

BTW: It's the only console I have with a complete collection of games (woo, hoo!!)

I'm still waiting on mine - considering you're in the country that I ordered it from and you just received it... I'm still going to be waiting for quite some time. I will report back when I get it though.

Where did you guys order it? The best offer I've found was $28 w/ 13 games. Sure sounds cheap even though at the moment my broke ass has trouble coming up with $10. :embarrassed:

I don't remember off the top of my head but it know that it was in a thread about the system posted in this very forum about three weeks ago. Give that search engine a go!

$28 including the games is a bargain! Grab it with both hands :)

DigitalPress: Good luck on the waiting! Maybe now that they are back in stock you'll recieve it quickly, from what I've heard they are a pretty good company normally. They are certainly spoken highly of regarding GP32s...

EDIT: The site is called www.GBAx.com - I think!

Thanks. I'm not usually too interested in handhelds but when I saw Brian Provinciano's site (http://bripro.com/low/index.php), I knew I had to get one. He's messing with it big time! :D

I just hope someone still carries these when I get hold of the cash.

Indeed, that site is pretty interesting, eh? I wonder how long it will take before there is a way to write yuor own games for it! I also noticed that there is more than the purported 13 games in total! He has another 4, taking the total to 17! The bugger with this is it means I don't have a complete collection  Oh well, I really don't know how I'm going to get all these 'new' ones! Also, it turns out there are 2 H/W iterations as well...

Hmmm, that linked site that hacks this little unit says there is 37 games, thought he only has 17....

Yeah, it claims on the box that there are a total of 37 games...I have looked absolutely everywhere and I have found 5 games which I do not have. I have 13 plus this other 5 makes a running total of 18 games now! When I collate a more definitve list I will post it here.

Look forward to hearing about them (and where to aquire them. ;-) !

With those roms tools up, I wonder if we'll see emulation soon...

So did they list any names of others on that box?

Oh, and does anyone know if those different hardware revs have different model numbers?

I can't find anywhere at all that sells the games individually. All it says on the side of the box is:

"Including 3 game categories, total 37 games"

I presume the 3 categories is an allusion to the 3 built-in games. As far as serial Nos go for the H/W - I have no idea!

If anyone else finds somewhere to buy the games please let us know!

Those game descriptions are the best I've ever seen, some are even better than in Admiral:

Have you gone to the south pole? Do you watch the penguin running? If never, now you have the chance to control the running of penguin. Hurry up and go to touch it.

Sure. LOL

I haven't found any more games so here is the list of games that I have collated:

Edited list:

2004
Adventure Legend Carlo
Ares
Dino Adventure Legend
Duckman
F1 - 2004 Racing
Feichvan VII
Happy Ball
Happy Killer
Lanneret
Penguin
Popper
Seatercel
Soldier
Street Hero
Supermotor
Trojan Legend

There are also the 3 built-in games which are:

2003
Drifter
Miner

I presume the claimed 37 games includes these built-in ones. That makes a total of 20 definite games. Popper and Miner are seemingly the same game but Popper is available on a separate cart. I still can't find anywhere to buy the carts I don't have though :(

Brian_Provinciano

Hi! My site's back up (damn host!).

I've got three more carts which I have yet to review, making the total known games 20 (3 built in + 17 carts). I've seen a number of game lists people posted, and they all fit into the 17 known carts, but I'm sure there are more, or at least, will be.

If you check out my site (http://bripro.com/low/gameking/index.php?page=devcart2), you can see how I'm kind of running a "demo" on the unit with my devcart :) I actually just used my Game King ROM Graphics Editor to hack the title screen of an existing game, but it's a start.

An emulator is indeed on the way, although I haven't released any ROM dumps, and am not going to (except for homebrews), as I'm not going to contribute to piracy. It won't be long before someone else, using the information on my site builds a dumper as well though, I'm sure. My site contains all the information and more needed to build your own dumper.

Since the last update, I've reverse engineered more of it, including the majority of the CPU pinout. I am building a device to finish reverse engineering it, and when that's done, finishing the emulator will be a snap.

I just recieved my 2nd Gameking. I got this one because it was the 1st H/W iteration and also hoped to get the games I'm missing. So I can now tell you there are no serial numbers at all although the console is also known as the GM-8126. However there is one physical difference - the speaker holes on the left side of the unit is different. On the 1st iteration there are 5 rows of holes in a pattern of 2-3-2-3-2. The 2nd iteration has 4 rows of 3 holes mirroring the pattern of the fake speaker holes on the left side of the unit.

There are at least 4 different colours confirmed available as well. So far there is:

Purple, Metallic Blue, Gold and Translucent Blue

If your interested I didn't get all the games I'm missing - I'm now ONE short! I'm totally gutted! I've now spent about £80 on this whim purchase!!

I haven't opened up the second model GK, as I want one that'll stay unmodified, but if I got another one, I'd dig into it. Both models have the same model number on the outside at least. Did you notice how bad the screen is on the older model, or was that just mine?

I've done a whole bunch more reverse engineering (on the original unit), and when I'm done, I'll post all the findings on my site again.

Pedro Lambrini
10-17-2004, 07:35 AM
I can't say I notice a difference between the 2 screens. After reading what you said on your site I spent ages swapping games and units trying to find a difference but there was not a straw to draw between them. However, neither of mine had the plastic covering you mentioned so I think that was maybe something to do with it. Maybe your first one was a very early unit? I have noticed that the controls on my new one feel different though. They feel a wee bit nicer, a bit more gentle on the old thumbs. Also the plastic for the second one seems different as well It's not as brittle - a bit softer feeling and the battery door fits better! I reckon because they are cheap there'll be quite a difference in quality across all the units...Did you notice any of these differences, at all?

BTW: After looking around I've come to the conclusion that the game Donner I found on a forum is a mispelling of Popper. I haven't found anything else about this game anywhere and if you look at the writing on the box for Popper it almost looks like Donner...So that makes 20 games in total so far.

I didn't specifically notice differences in the buttons, although the fact that the new one is painted (gold) makes the unit feel different. I like the smooth feel of the original, unpainted one better. I orderd my original GK as soon as I saw it on Success-HK's site, and I check the site often, so it's likely the very original version which I received. Success-HK was the very first site I ever could find the unit on. I searched everywhere looking for info at the time, and could not find any until after I began reverse engineering it, in which I found GBAX's review of it.

Damn, that'll be another purchase then! I see they've went for the PSP look this time round. I wonder if they've upgraded the H/W...I was thinking that they might up the refresh of the screen but I presume that would make it incompatible with the old games then? I can't translate the page at the mo 'cos my translator thingy is playing up. I'll try again later.

Didn't notice that! Sure looks nice... a nice PSP design. My guess is that it's the exact same system in a different design though. Can't wait to get one!

Erm where exactly are people buying these?

Pedro Lambrini

You can buy them from Success, GBAx and Timetop themselves. There are probably other places but these are the ones of the top of my head. :) I recommend you buy one as they are pretty cool!

The Gameking is definitely worth the money! Have a look at Brian's site for lots of info, and reviews of some of the games. It really is a cool wee machine but it helps if you have a sense of humour - the Engrish is the best and the artwork on the boxes is ripped right off big commercial games (there's Maximo, Unreal Tournament, Castlevania etc) but they are in nice wee boxes...

The GTA is basically a handheld NES. There are 2 versions - NTSC and PAL. I don't have one yet but they are meant to be pretty cool. The games plug in perpindicular to the console but don't seem to get in the way too much.

But, yeah, buy a Gameking or maybe a Gameking II when it's released... :)

I did receive mine early last week. Haven't even opened the box yet, but the game boxes were rather hilarious to read (and the artwork on some of them equally amusing, like the one that has the sea of penguins on the cover).

Should be testing it all out during the week.

Did anyone notice some of the other stuff by that manufacturer? These look like Sort of an R-zone inspired thing with the screen built into the cart. Click on the links on the right side to see variations.
