With all of the Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys 'R Us etc. deals clearing out the shelves for the new batch this holiday season, what did you find to be the BEST bargain, the BEST surprise, the BEST game overall?
I've picked up so many $4.99 - $9.99 games since August that I don't even know where to begin playing! Lend a brother a hand and guide me through this maze of gaming's discounted titles :)

I can't remember all the titles that we got, but one that sticks out is Denki Blocks for GBA. It's a little puzzle game that starts out really easy but steadily gets harder and harder. The concept of the game is to get all of the blocks of the same color connected to each other - it's a lot harder than it sounds. I know I've put in many hours on that one, but I'm also a big fan of puzzle games.
Honestly, I think we're in the same predicament of you - caught in a terrible backlog and haven't gotten to most of the games that we picked up! LOL

The only game I picked up (because i hardly play current gen games) is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Well worth the $6 I paid for it at toys r us. The only gripe I have is the infamous glitch where you save at one point in the game and become trapped there. I lost 7 hours of gameplay because I was stuck in the glitch, and being one who hates walkthroughs, had never heard of it. For those of you like me who hate spoilers just remember that the second or third time you play as the mummy dont save in the area, go ahead and play it through.
Other than the glitch it was everything I would want in a game. The graphics were stunning, the puzzles sometimes hair pulling hard, and a great story.

I have a pile of about 20 untouched games myself. The wife is going out of town and I get off from work around 1:00 tomorrow, and I fully intend to try these all out. I suspect some will be stnkers, but I also expect at least a few to waste enough time that I don't get through it all either.

I too picked this up for $9.99 at TRU. From what I've played of it thus far (maybe an hour.. hour and a half), it's a bit different. I really almost turned it off at the beginning, because I couldn't get into it, but thus far, I'm glad I didn't. I hate to comment on the beginning part - especially without having played through the rest of the game to see where it fits in, but it really just kinda irritated me. Pretty good stuff so far after that though, but I'm not very far into the game. As far as putting it at the top of your list - I'd say pass on that. It's closer to the bottom of my "to play" list at the moment - around 7th out of 10 or so.
Anyway, back to the discussion at hand.

Unfortunately, I didn't get word of the CC deal until a few days after it started, so pickings were slim for me. However, I am enjoying Wipefout Fusion ($6.99) and Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends ($9.99) for the PS2. Both are definitely worth their price. Also, Moto GP ($4.99) for the GBA was alright. I am not a big fan of racers, especially on handhelds, but this was not bad.
I have yet to try Rune, Deus Ex, Eternal Ring, Evergrace and Yanya Caballista (all $4.99) for the PS2. I suppose some of them will be stinkers.
I recently picked up Rogue Ops and Go!Go! Hypergrind for the GC at EB for $9.99 new. Anyone try these yet?

I picked up Tony Hawk for the Xbox not too long ago from Toys R Us. I already have all the PSX, PS2, Dreamcast and N64 versions, but it was cheap and I used to really like the series so I thought I'd go ahead and get it. Being a launch title, it doesn't show off the Xbox's power like some of the later games do, but it was fun to play and it has some levels that aren't available on any of the other versions.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is at the top of my list right now to try, but I haven't actually played it yet to find out if it is any good. I've heard that it is though.
I would definitely suggest Outlaw Volleyball though. I got it for $9.99 new at Best Buy a long time ago, and have probably spent more time on it for my Xbox than any other game... until the ESPN 2K5 series came around, that is.

That fact that I have to list Smashing Drive for Xbox says a lot about how many "under $10" games I got this year - it wins by default, even though I've rather stab my eyes out than play it again.

I really like MVP Baseball 2003 for the XBox...paid about $7 or $8 for it. It differs from MVP Baseball 2004 in that you don't play your minor league teams' games which don't interest me that much anyway...
I also like Cleopatra's Fortune on the PS1...one of those very addictive Tetrisy kind of games...
I quite enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (Xbox) that I got for $4.99 at CC during their big sale.

The only brand new "under $10" games I got at the big chains this summer were Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast and Perfect Dark. Even when I buy brand new, I buy the oldest stuff they got, haha. :P
I'm gonna have to go back a few years for my choice. I remember going to a Toys R Us "buy 2, get one free" sale, and I picked out 6 low priced titles. I actually did pretty well, most of the games were quite good (F-Zero X, Space Station Silicon Valley, Rayman, etc.), but one of my favorites was Tail Concerto. It's easily one of my most underrated favorites. Great 3D platforming, really nice anime cutscenes by the extremely talented Nobuteru Yuuki, cute plot, and just overall an extremely nice total package. :) If it had RPG gameplay rather than platform action, I'd guarantee you that it'd be selling for AT LEAST 20 or 30 bucks these days. I think it's best with the action gameplay, though. ;)

Out of the recent crop Futurama is thus far my favorite, but to be honest that's the only one of the 20+ I picked up that I've played thus far. Not a great game by any means, but decent enough to make it worth it for fans of the show.
All-time it's Super Mario Kart for SNES on clearance at Sears. :)

I bought too many $5 to $10 games this year, and most of them are still shrinkwrapped.
Winning Eleven 6 ($10 at Best Buy) is certainly worth playing, high-quality game, but that is very well known.
I was surprised about Chaos Legion ($5 from Circuit City). It is worthwhile playing for three reasons:
1) It is a modern attempt to make an innovative hybrid game. A bit of Devil May Cry style and combat, and a bit of Dynasty Warriors. Flawed in execution, it offers an interesting concept and subtle strategy and RPG elements. Unfortunately, too much button-mashing suppresses the strategy elements and makes it a second-rate game.
2) The game has lots of potential. A sequel which corrects its flaws and introduces new innovative ideas makes actually a lot of sense. This could be a hit.
3) Capcom-gorgeous graphics of demons in a gothic setting. (I like them demons!)
The best cheap buy I did on ebay. Silhouette Mirage for $3.50 (including shipping). Great price for a 2D sidescrolling and strategic masterpiece as a parody of 2D shooters. Well, no surprise about the quality. It's just a GREAT game which can be had for cheap.

Beyond Good and Evil for Cube was kick-ass.
Vexx for Xbox was well worth the $5 I paid.

I also like Cleopatra's Fortune on the PS1...one of those very addictive Tetrisy kind of games...
I second that. Bought it at EB, got home, decided to test it out, wound up playing it for about 2 hours. :D
Haven: Call Of The King can be found almost anywhere for $5 or so, and it's a decent platformer.
I also enjoyed 4X4 Evo 2 on the Gamecube. It's a decent racing game, but it has it's flaws. You can only own 4 cars at a time, which is a bummer. I wanted to own a huge garage of digital trucks and SUVs!
And finally, to those who have a Playstation but don't have Qix Neo, please get this awesome game ASAP. (I'll let you off the hook if you have Ultimate Qix for Genesis, though)

Beyond Good & Evil for Xbox. $10 at Circuit City still and looks like a frickin' cartoon.
I would have to second Qix Neo. It's $3.99 pre-owned at EB now, if I'm not mistaken.
Of course, like the rest of you, I still have several $5 and $10 titles that need to be played. I found the Sims and Mortal Kombat: DA sitting in a shopping bag last night. When games like those get bought for cheap and get forgotten, it's time to get on the ball.

Go Go hypergrind for the gamecube is really good. Its just like tony hawk but has more of an emphasis on fun. Its drawn/produced by the same people that made ren and stimpy. Because its in a cartoonish style, the terrain is a lot more imaginitive that tony hawk, its also much less frustring when you fall. Same awesomely long combos, with a lot less "start, down, start" if you know what i mean.
Also, breakdown for xbox is worth the 10 bucks. It has its flaws, but it really breaks some ground in terms of what a FPS can do. Its lays presidence to what FPS's will do in the future, but boxing people is hella fun.

Dreamcast -- Sonic Adventure 2 Birthday pack (Lik-Sang, 9.99) Wow, this started my obsession with sonic, I got a Genesis b/c of it.
Genesis - Tough decision, so many of the games I have were under $10. I definately have to vote for Sonic 2, Overall I've played it soo much this month..... Love/Hate thing
Sega CD - I don't have a lot of games for this sytem, but my fave is Rise of the Dragon.

I still have a lot of sealed games I didn't even get to yet from that CC sale (and I also traded a lot of them in for an Xbox and some various other games that I wanted more), but I've enjoyed Bomberman Generations for GC immensely. Hell, I haven't even tried the 1P mode yet - just the 4P mode. We've spent hours playing that damn game, well worth the $5.
I already had it, but Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow was a nice pickup for $5. I don't mind having a sealed copy of this to hold onto. Stuntman and Driver 2 are admirable efforts for the GBA, although Stuntman is the superior game. Again, how can you go wrong for $5? I still have Lufia, Lunar Legend, and Megaman & Bass sealed from the sale, and I'd venture that they are probably excellent games as well. Time will tell if I actually open them.
Pro Race Driver for PS2 is way better than I expected. Some great racing action and a somewhat interesting storyline. I messed around with Roadkill for a few minutes; it has some potential, since it plays a lot like Twisted Metal, but have yet to pick it up and play it again.
Pirates of the Caribbean for Xbox seems like something I could really get into if I put the time into it. The graphics are breathtaking, and I love pirate themed games - so it's awesome to sail around and enter towns. However, the Xbox version is quite buggy and I still don't have the hang of some of the controls or full understanding of everything to do in the game. Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick isn't bad either on Xbox.
Someone mentioned 4x4 Evo 2 for GC.....I picked that one up and I hated the control scheme. I ended up trading it because it was unplayable. I spent quite a bit of time with the first 4x4 Evo when it came out on Dreamcast, so I was looking forward to playing the sequel. It would have been fine if you could program your own controls, but the game does not allow that function - in this day and age, shouldn't all games have this feature? I would've actually liked this game if I could've made changes to the control scheme.
I still have games like Wave Race: Blue Storm, Clock Tower 3, World Rally Championship, Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown, and more that are still sitting around sealed that look like decent games. One day, hopefully, I'll get to them, but these are the $5 games that I've been enjoying so far.

I've been playing Ford Racing 2 (PS2) a bit lately, and it's... okay. The controls are so-so (I've had to tap the X button to get my car to speed up more often than I should), and the game suffers from a lack of options. It would have been nice to upgrade cars like in Gran Turismo. A lot of the game is based around time trials and staying on the racing line. There's not enough "racing" in the game as there should be. And I'm pretty sure that once I unlock every car in the Ford Challenge, this will go back on the shelf, since it doesn't have much replay value beyond that.
It's not an awful game, but it seems like there should have been more to it. It retails for $9.99, and I paid $5. If you enjoy racing games as much as I do, you will get some enjoyment out of it, but it won't last long. It's a decent weekend rental.
