With a recent eBay purchase I picked up a copy of AirBoarder 64 for the Nintendo 64. It's obviously Japanese, and is CIB. I haven't been able to find this game in the DP guides, on eBay, or on Google for sale.

Anybody know if this game is uncommon or simply unwanted? What would I need to play Japanese N64 games on my US N64 (haven't tried yet)?

If there's an N64 collector out there whom this would help out, let me know as well.

The only word in English on the back of the box is, "COOL".

Well, I got some import golg game. I picked up a cheap US sports game and switched out the back of the cart and it worked fine. The import carts won't fit because of the notches. They don't match the US console. Just pick up a cheap US game and swap.

They were going to release it in the US but it got pulled. There was a review of it in EGM and a short preview in Nintendo Power before it got cancelled.

did a quick google image search and came up with this UK site

http://www.retrogames.co.uk/stock/html/nintendo_64.html

it seems to sell the game for 12.00 pounds .... not the UK, but Japanese Version, so the version you have. I have never heard of the game, but if you found that in the states, i'd say it was a pretty sweet find. Finding any import in the states is a good find IMHO.

My guess is leaning more towards "unwanted" than uncommon. There isn't a lot of interest in N64 importing out there. Basically, the only games people ARE interested in are Sin & Punishment and Japanese versions of games that got US releases.

As for playing Japanese games on a US console, you can remove the plastic tabs from the back corners of the slot (I melted them out) or you can buy a slot extension (AKA "converter").

I think certain games like Bomerman 64 (JP-release is a totally different game from the US BM64) or Rakuga Kids would be more in demand if they weren't so damned obscure. But yeah... at this point in time the only N64 imports worth anything have the Treasure logo on the box.

The best, easiest, and least damaging way to play imports on an N64 is to just use a Gameshark.

Everything stays the same - no swapping, cutting, snipping, melting, or anything else - just pop it on there and play like normal.

This may be true if worth = price.

However, the N64 is a great import console - and is pretty much underrated in that aspect. Nobody really liked the games here - why would they import any? But I would encourage you to research it further - there's some gems to be had. And they don't all have the Treasure logo on the box! ;)

Yeah, I get the feeling that Rakuga Kids is pretty rare as far as Japanese N64 games go (excluding 64DD titles, of course). Due to Bomberman 64's extremely late release (last Japanese N64 game), I'd be interested to know just how many copies were produced and sold. Well, I'm just glad that I already have it. :) Damn fine little Bomberman title.

Just use a Shark or a converter if you can find one. I got one frome a friend along with japanese goldeneye and majoras mask, 64 importing is pretty cool.

It was released in Australia and I found it enjoyable since you could glide basically everywhere, although it was linear.

It was released in Europe as well, goes 12€ for a new one. Then again, it's a bit harder to play PAL games in a US N64.

Oh I didn't it mean it like that! Yeah, worth = price as I used it. Sorry for any confusion. I have, in fact, researched the N64 import scene (along with the import scene of most every other console). It has some nice imports, although nowhere near the bounty that the Saturn or PS1 has.

You've got one, and I've got one. Well, now we know there are at least two copies! JP Bomberman 64, I believe, was released after the GC's Japanese launch. November/December 2001, maybe? And Bomberman games don't sell particularly well in Japan anymore. I've never seen one on eBay. So... definitely under 5,000 copies, I'd guess.

Well, whaddayaknow?

While looking through the lot, I found two more Japanese games -- Pilot Wings 64, and Mario Party. Japanese gaming goodness! I'm an import collector and didn't even know it.

All three Japanese games are signigicantly heavier than any US game I own. Also, I just tried them and they all fit in my US consoles just fine. Is that normal? They are not protos (I'm guessing), even though the writing is in Japanese they all look like normal store bought copies.

Any ideas?

My JAP/USA/PAL Mischief Makers carts weight the same. Hmm. Battery back-up and early games are all I can come up with, neither of which go very well with Airboarder. I know Ocarina weighs a ton but that's probably the same in every region.

If the notches in JAP carts are in a different place than in US carts, then all your consoles must be import-modified. :)

Is it even possible to play Pal n64 games on a U.S system? I'd like to know because i have a pal copy of Taz Express i would love to play.

I've already purchased the Passport Plus 3 and some other converter from videogamedepot.com but the game still won't work.

It's possible but you have to take a chip from a PAL N64 and put it in a US N64 or vice versa.
With PP3, you might want to try a code from another game. For example, US Conker will boot on PAL console using a code for JAP Zelda.
