View Full Version : Nintendo DS -- Preorder and Launch Games

I pre-ordered my Nintendo DS at my local EB today. I was worried about how Nintendo has a habit of trickling out hardware for any new launches -- and the manager confirmed for me that their pre-order quota (people promised to get a DS with the first shipment) is just about filled.

The system will come with a demo for the new Metroid Prime Echos as well as a simple pack in game.

Here's the list of DS games which will be available with the system:

Asphalt: Urban GT (racing game)
Feel the Magic (no clue, possible RPG?)
Mr. Driller: Drill Spirts
Ping Pals (no clue)
Rayman
Ridge Racer
Spiderman 2
Super Mario 64 DS
NFL Madden 2005
Urbz: Sims in the City

And games coming out shortly after:
Advance Wars DS (January 11)
Animal Crossing (January 11)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles DS (Feb 8)
Frogger DS (Feb 8)
Goldeneye: Rogue Agent DS (Feb 8)
Mario Kart DS (Januray 11)
Metroid Prime Hunters (January 11)
Need for Speed: Underground (Feb 8)
Super Mario Brothers DS (January 11)
Viewtiful Joe (Feb 8)
Wario Ware DS (Jan 11)
Yoshi's Touch and Go (Jan 11)

And somewhere in there is Final Fantasy 3, a Castlevania game, and probaly a Metal Gear game.

Mostly sequels and remakes, but enough good quality stuff in there to warrent a buy.

Yep, I reserved my system last night at Babbage's. They weren't able to reserve games yet though. I wanted to go ahead and reserve Mario 64 for starters.
The title's that are available definately warrant a buy. Even if alot or some are remakes.

I just thought of something which is getting WAY AHEAD of things, but it will definately be cool if Nintendo sometime in the future makes a DS Player for the Gamecube, like the GB player for the Gamecube.

Has anyone seen any screenshots of Rayman? I've already preordered my system with Mr. Driller and Mario 64 at EBGames.com, but I'm considering getting Rayman too.

Holy crap is that Feel the Magic game weird... getting your significant other to puke by pushing her stomach... how quaint...

I must have this lol

I don't know if I'd want to be caught BLOWING into my DS in public tho... hehehe

I don't think there is any screenshots of Rayman yet for some reason, even though it's suppossed to be released at launch I think??
I want to see them to, no matter what i plan on buying Rayman DS too, haven't been dissapointed with one yet.

sighs.
*goes back to his cave to write his manifesto against nintendo*
I'm holding out until I find out if Super Mario Brothers DS is going to be the sidescrolling mario i've been waiting for, or a (not so super) mario 64 sequel, in crappy 3d. At this point, the only title that looks to be more than "meh" is goldeneye.....
Nintendo had best not put the lid on the GBA's can quite yet. That's all i can say.

Super Mario Brothers DS is a side scroller like the old school games. Judging by the pics and video footage the game seems to be the same idea but with updated graphics (maybe 2.5D?). Certainly with models rather than sprites for the main characters. It looks pretty groovy :-P

Oh, Feel the Magic is the American name of the Japanese game I Would Die For You, a game that was talked about in a major topic here. :)

I'm surprised to see that game is coming out in the States! O_O

Okay, what's the Ping Pals game?

Anyone know if I missed any games? The list was taken from what the manager at my local EB printed off for me.

Oh, most of the 'launch' games are listed as coming out a few days before the actuall system on 11/21.

I'm waiting for colored DS systems to be released before getting mine. I'm tired of grey, black, silver, and white systems! Some of the games (like Feel The Magic) make me very tempted to pick it up at launch...

There is really cool footage from Nintendo's Press Conference on the 7th. It shows one of N's programmers showing off the new Mario 64x4 - it really is pretty cool. You can play as Yoshi, Wario etc and even Bowser! There is loads of extra wee touches and extra levels. If I find the URL again I'll post it. :)

I just thought of something which is getting WAY AHEAD of things, but it will definately be cool if Nintendo sometime in the future makes a DS Player for the Gamecube, like the GB player for the Gamecube.

How would that work, consdering the DS is supposed to utilize this "revolutionary" stylus?

Do we go back to light pens? I always dug that back in the Apple ][ days.

Maybe you could have an adaptor similar to the GBA Player but cut down. You could just connect the DS you own to the 'Cube/DS Player and use it as a controller for the TV display. I reckon most people who own a GBA Player own a GBA so I can't see the fact that you would need a DS for a DS Player being that much of a problem. It would just be cool to play the games on a big screen :)

DAMN, I never thought of that. Well ok, maybe nintendo will make it for the "new" system, the revolution. They did saw it's going to focus more on revolutionizing the systems and put out a system that does something different.

Or like Pedro said, make something like the GBA connectivity thing.

Here's that link to Mario 64x4:

There's loads of other footage from the conference. It's worth a look - it really shows you what all the fuss is about.

How many bits is the DS?

I believe it's a 64 bit system. I don't know for sure though.

Pedro Lambrini

The last time I heard these are the processors in the DS:

Main Processor - ARM946E-S (Running at 67 MHz)
Cache: 8 KB Instruction Cache, 4KB Data Cache
TCM: 8KB Instruction, 4KB Data
Sub Processor - ARM7TDMI (Running at 33 MHz)

They are both 32 bit RISC processors. It's still a pretty powerful wee system though. Remember all the games are optimised for these processors and the rest of the architecture.

The N64 had a MIPS 64bit RISC at 93.75 Mhz but it had to contend with a much higher resolution and old fashioned graphics rendering techniques amongst other things. If you compare the CPU specs of the GBA and the SNES you'll notice that the GBA isn't quite as powerful as the SNES all round but the graphics technology more than makes up for it. I think the same will be true of the DS. IE. Less processing power than the N64 but a much more elegant way of dealing with graphics. If you watch the video for Mario64 you can see the improvement in that one game (in fact Mario Kart DS looks pretty close to the 'Cube and so does Metroid!)

TINY carts! :D

And not that much bigger then a GBA. The re-design was a good idea.

Pedro Lambrini
10-11-2004, 07:28 AM
My favourite thing about the game carts is that they look like they'll be arriving in nice plastic cases rather than the shitey, horrible, cheap and nasty cardboard boxes of the GB, GBC and most especially the GBA (no plastic case for the actual cart at all!). This has really cheered me up since one of my pet hates of modern gaming is the shoddy, generic packaging. Here's hoping that this is a trend set to grow :D

PS: Get the feeling they're aiming at the adult market here?

I probably won't be getting a DS. I just don't play my gameboy advance enough to justify buying a new portable. The truth is, I just don't play hand held games as much as I used to.

Man am I ever excited about this baby!!! I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a new system. I'll be picking up Mario 64, Rayman, Mr. Driller, and Feel the Magic at launch, and it will rock like crazy.

anyway, Is there any word on region locking? I'd like to know, because I know konami won't release the Goemon game in the US, and I neeeeeeeed it. :)

I like the irony of Ridge Racer being a launch title.

The more that I see of this system, the more that I am really impressed with it. Did anyone else look at Ping Pals and think that the rumors about it creating it's own wireless network might be a little more true? The screenshots show 15 people connected to both chat sessions?

If that happens, this could be one hell of a killer ap.

I'm impressed. I won't be getting it at launch, but I'll definitely be thinking about getting one in the near future.
