Ok, this just got on my mind for some reason. I remember like 10 years ago hanging at my friend's house (back in Europe) ...and his computer was broken - so he took out this old gaming system that used "carts" that looked like music cassetes (I'm not sure what you people call them but - u know the things before the CDs came LOL )

Anyway - the games had to "load" in ...so it took like good 15 minutes to play. Any ideas what the heck that system is?

How about PayPaling funds to buy a pie?

You're not getting your answer until you do! LOL

Mmmmmmmmm, the only ones I can think of are the Supercharger for the Atari 2600 and the cassette player for the Commodore Vic-20 and 64. O_O

Sounds almost like it might have been the Bally Astrocade:

http://www.jzcool.net/console/astrocade.jpg

Or if by "music cassettes", you mean like "8-tracks", it could have been the Odyssey 2:

Do I win a pie*?

Any chance it was the Coleco ADAM Computer?

Nah, I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Astrocade like you said - those loaded into the system rather like music cassettes.

Sebastian owes SKVermin a pie!

Sebastian

nope - it is not any one of those

More info (whatever I can remember)

the cassettes (not 8-tracks) went into a cassette-deck that looked a bit like a bulky walkman...this was and outside extension connected to a gray console/old computer (can't really remember what it was...only that it was gray)

Then to play the game you had to do some settings and then press play on the "walkman" ...which made the tape roll (just like a regular music cassette in a regular walkman)

Then u had to wait some time (sometimes long) to play the game...for the game to load into the console/old computer

ANY IDEAS!?

O_O ...i know

Could have been any of the computer out at the time. TRS-80?

Since you're in the US, it most likely wasn't a Spectrum. Probably a C-64, maybe a Tandy or something else. *shrug*

Doh! I can't be ahead when I'm behind.

Who knows, then...probably a spectrum, but could be anything else from a Dragon clone to...well...something else! LOL

Spectrums (Spectra?) were black rather than grey, as were Amstrad CPCs.
The Dragon is another possibility, but I'd say the C64 is still most likely.

How about the TI-99/4A. Those were gray (silver actually) used a cassette deck and had a cart port. They were popular in the US and Europe, and had games like Tunnels of Doom that required loading times.

Not all Speccys (odd plural form I know! :P) were black, as there's a silver one out there that I've been thinking on and off of getting. It's not a common one, though.

It could be just about any 20 year old computer. Do you remember anything else?

Yeah. Micros with tape drives built in aren't too common.

Hey, what you described to me sounds exactly what my freind Ben used to own. I forget the name of the system, but I remember one game for it: It was a motorbike game called "Stunt Steve" or something like that.

But I do remember the system, just not the name.

My guesses were for the BBC Micro and the Spectrum, since they were so common in Europe, and not common in US like the C64.

The majority of BBCs used 5.25" floppies rather than tapes, and Spectrums were generally black rather than grey, which is why I discounted them.
The C64 and Spectrum were the most popular UK computers of the era by a significant margin (the next closest, the Amstrad CPC, had a built-in tape deck/disc drive rather than an external one), which is why I leant towards the C64 (along with the fact that it's beige/grey and has an external tape drive that kinda looks like an early walkman).
I'll probably have egg on my face when I'm proved wrong though... ;)

I've never left the US. The only system I've use tapes is the Adam.
