View Full Version : N64 Expansion Pack
I have a few questions about the N64 EXP. Pack
What games need this...all I know of is DK64 and Majora's Mask
The games that don't need this, does it make the games look better or add more things?
When I get it and put it in the place where that one thing is do I ever have to take it out again?

Perfect Dark is another game that uses this
The games that dont need it, they look and remain the same
When you put the Expansion Pak in, just let it sit, the Jumper Pak (original is good for when you want to sell the N64...since the Expansion Pak is worth about the same as the system ironically these days)

star wars rouge squadron also used it,and it made the graphics look a bit clearer and better then playing it without it.

I saw one of these at GameStop the other day...it was like $20 or some such. Dang!
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness will use it. Don't select the high-res mode, as it slows the game down horribly. Unless you've overclocked your N64, anyway.
Rouge Squadron uses it, but I don't recall seeing much difference before and after swapping in that expansion pack. The game looks great with it, though.
Perfect Dark uses it.
I'm not sure what else uses it.

DK64 and Majora's Mask are the ONLY games that require it. Perfect Dark requires it for most of the stuff in the game, but not everything. It's totally unnecessary for any other game, and in many cases, it'll make the game WORSE (like Hybrid Heaven and Castlevania: LoD where the frame rate gets terrible).

Yup, that's really all you need to know, too. :(

Care to elaborate more? So I take it you need to swap it in and out for different games...?
I haven't really purchased much into N64 stuff yet (I have the system and maybe 2/3 games)...

You take the jumper pak out, put the expansion pack in, the cover back on, and start playing :D
You shouldn't ever have to touch it again.

to fix CastleVania LoD, turn off Hi-Res Mode in options (when using an Expansion Pak on the game)...it'll be smoother for you

Missing at least one game, Top Gear Overdrive.
I imagine there are others than too.
And like has already been stated, Perfect Dark does not require the expansion pack. But you need it to play the majority of the game.

I don't know about every single game, but MOST should give you the option to turn off whatever "enhancements" the expansion pak has to offer. I've yet to see the need to physically take my expansion pak out and put back in the jumper pak.

The expansion pack isnt completely required for Perfect Dark. You can play, but the modes are extremely limited. From what I remember (3-4+ years ago), you can only do the one player story mode without it, but Challenges, Multiplay, and Co-op require the pack.

When you start the game, you'll be presented with an option before the opening "cinema" of Ortega (I think? It's first person view...) chasing...somebody (Ada? ADA?! ADAAAAA!!!!)
Anyhow, that's where you'll select Low Res (default) or High Res. Once selected, you can't change it until the machine is reset.
With a game like Rogue Squadron II, it'll say "Expansion Pack Detected" and that's the end of it. There's no reason NOT to play with the expansion pack for that game.

StarCraft 64 was another game that used it. You can only play 50% of the game without it(the not as good 50%). Also you needed it to play multiplayer. Wish I still had that game, it was good. :(

Space Station Silicon Valley is the only reason I can think of to remove the expansion pack.
