This game is so freaking cool. I played it all of last night and most of today, and I gotta say it is a great time and truly unique experience. A lot of the fun comes from learning what the buttons do, and how to work individual components like the radio tuner and communications buttons. Just about everything on the console is useful. The weapons are really good too. They range from standard rail guns to a good (and much more believable) twist on the old close combat lazer sword you see in Zone of the Enders, Armored Core, etc. I've only made it to Mission 4 so far (3 took me hours to beat), but from what I've played, each mission has a variety of ways to accomplish your goals, all of them fun. Plus freaking out and flipping up the lid and slamming the eject button when the stuff hits the fan just feels good, despite losing your mech.

I second the thought. I hear it gets pretty easy once you get used to the controls, but then it's time to try other games (like Halo) and see if you can get the controller to do anything. Haven't tried this yet.

My roomate is secretly drooling over it, but pretending like he's too good for it. He mocked me when I bought it, but I catch him staring at the controller with wild lust in his eyes, and watching me play the game when he thinks I'm not noticing.

I had to pick up the big box m'self.

I haven't had time to play with it (could be days), but I'm psyched to see what comes of it- whether or not more games get sold for it.

And for some reason I get excited at the thought of online games with it. Why, I dunno.

I'm not that into Mech stuff, but it's univerally loved.

I don't even have an Xbox yet, but I just found myself putting down a deposit ("stepping up" said the clerk \^_^/ ) on the SB yesterday. The local Funco only does pre-orders, apparently. Is there anybody in the U.S. who is stocking the thing in and having a big pile for plain old retail impulse purchase?

Now, I don't know if the guy was pulling my leg or not, and I've been planning to buy this thing from day 1, but he said that pre-orders were closing soon, and that anybody who didn't have a pre-order in by around next weekend would be SOL ("buying it on ebay" he said X_x ). Is this true? Do U.S. gamers really have a window of less than a month to order SB? I can't believe it, but then, I put down my deposit anyway just in case...

Just teasing you mostly... :)

I don't know if Funco is still taking orders after the game has been released or not (and I work there!) All the stores I've been to over the past few days (Target, Meijers, EB) haven't had any for extra sale.

There seems to be a sequel coming, with on-line multiplayer via Xbox Live. Google has failed me. So: Anybody heard whether
1) the controller will come bundled with the sequel,
2) the controller will be optional with the sequel, or
3) the controller will be separately purchaseable?

OK--I finally got an Xbox, so I spent the wee hours of Wednesday morning putting together that beast of a controller. Opening up the box I felt a sense of reverence in my champagne-soaked breast. Like holding the Lost Ark of the Covenant, or Radiant Silvergun. The instruction manual is unbelievable. It was like being 13 in 1985, reading the Battletech first edition rules.

So I start the game up, and what? I have to pilot this thing without eight weeks of simulator training? Don't worry, Sir! Unfortunately, a couple minutes later I was not quite quick enough with the eject button...

After sleeping off the hangover I (miraculously rose from the grave and) gave it another spin. My wife saw the controller, commented that it was "pornographic", asked how much it cost, and then sat down to give it a shot. (Yes!) Fortunately, she was faster with the eject button than I was.

BTW, I was wondering whether you ever need to deal with a single toggle switch out of that bank of toggles on the left, or if you only deal with them en masse on startup (or restart).

Oh, and yeah. Steel Battalion rocks the house.

So what's up with all y'all VT pilots? I am the king of suck.

First pilot: Failed to eject on Mission 2
Second pilot: Ran out of funds on Mission 4
Third pilot: Ran out of funds on Mission 4
Fourth pilot: Stormed out of room, forgot to eject on Mission 4
Fifth pilot: Ran out of funds on Mission 6

But on the bright side, I'm getting really good at missions 1-5. If I hadn't taken a wrong turn in the canyon (then turned around, saw three angry Jaraleccs, soiled self), I might have made it to mission 7...

And I got a 3000 point BONUS in the VT damage box on mission 2 this time--is that like a "no scratches on the paint" bonus?

I love the game, but I am the true King Of Suck as you put it. The last week I have ot played as much, except 3 hours Sunday night.

I am currently working on a custom table/console for the controller. Right now its moreless a table I slapped together on castors to roll away. I sit in an armchair when I play so I cut the stand as such so it has " arms " to cover the arms of my armchair. Once I am happy and think it through and get it at a proper size, I will pad and upholster the arms. Right now it may be to big, but I can put the pedals on it with the joystick and roll it to the corner out of the way. My dream is to encase it and wire in the surround sound speakers so I can feel like I am truly sitting in the VT. All this from a guy who never played Mechs before.

Since I suck at it, I entered the code that opens all the VTS, weaponry and levels since I might never earn them. Its a cool feature to show buddies when they come over and I showcase the game. Or I use it if I just want to play a level and not several at once to get there when time is limited. Don't be to hard on me for this one!

U WILL PAY 4 YORE CH34T1NG TR34CH3RY!!!111 >:(

Well, maybe not anytime soon...

That table sounds like a cool idea. I've just got an armchair. I wonder if resting the three-piece controller on two small arms is bad for it?

Since my game lair's stereo system is a boom box, I just wire the audio into it and then use a nice set of big heavy headphones, which is plenty immersive for me. And makes it so I can't hear anybody calling me to do chores.

I haven't used any cheats yet because I figure that the practice might make me suck less. Plus, it heightens the tension. O FUCK O FUCK O FUCK HERE COME THE JARALACCS!!!11!

I would never put the joystick across the arms of the chair. I don't like the idea of any sort of stress on the joystick where it is connected in the 3 pieces. That is why I have an evolving table in the works.

I got a great deal on the guide, sticker on cover said 21.99 CDN, with taxes I got it for $9.19 CDN @ Electronics Boutique.

I just picked this baby up today too! All these recent posts on the game made me buy it... and surprisingly little resistance from my partner.

I started on Rookie, but I figure once I lose my save, I'll re-start in normal mode. It's a lot of fun, and I can't really say that there is anything like it. It is SO immersive. I walk away from the game, and I can't even explain it... I still imagine mechs everywhere, and that bloody controller in front of me.

As for my stand, I put two wooden chairs facing each other and plop it down on that. Works for me. I can't invest any more money into this to build a stand!

Cacpom's site says that it is SOLD OUT. I've seen it starting to dwindle in supply around here, so I bagged it just in case. I have no idea whether they will re-make them for the sequel. All I have to say, is that I hope that the sequel isn't online only. But, has the sequel been officially announced yet?

Rumor I have heard is online is not really a Sequal game but an Add-on Disc for the current game. Anyone know if its true?

I really enjoy it. People freak when they ask me how much I paid for it, also considering that I only make $7.15 an hour. It is not the kinda game you can just sit down and play for a buzz. When i play it, It is like making a commitment. I need at least an hour of free time, I have to clear a spot on my couch, and get all serious and cautious.
One thing I would reccomend for those of you that are losing your charactors, is to insert the cheap that allows free mission mode. Keep playing free mission mode, (with the mech they normally give you), until you are SURE that you can beat it, and then complete the level in campaign mode. This will keep your supply points up and your score will rock, and it saves you from losing your charactor.
BTW, trying drowning on the bridge on level 3. They actually programmed in water flowing into the cockpit. That is so damn cool.

Yeah, when I saw the waterfall in my cockpit, I realized I should hit the flashing "eject" button. I have discovered that you also have several opportunities to drown on level 4. Like after my strafing run against the battleship when I took a long walk off a short pier...

[edit: before, I said] The thing about free mission is that there are no supply runs. [On edit:] THIS IS NOT TRUE. IN FREE MISSION YOU HAVE INFINITE SUPPLY RUNS!!1! KILL KILL KILL!

I love this game...first every guy who comes over and sits down to play with it says....damn ...this is the Shiznit......and every girl is like....you paid what for it!?!?!?

I stopped playing SB after I completed the 6th mission. When I first bought the game, I thought the 20 missions or whatever it has was kind of paltry, but the amount of planning and forethought that goes into each mission makes the game a great play as long as you've got time.

Mission 7 kicked ya to the floor, eh? LOL

[edit:] I must admit that mission 7 kicked me to the floor, as well, and then stepped on my nuts for good measure. But I finally prevailed, and found the Quasar as well! What did it for me as far as I can tell was the ten ASM guided missiles I pumped into the Jaralaccs NS boss at the end of the level. After that I mustered up the courage to saunter in with the PT-22b and hand-deliver a big HELLO. heh.

Hey all. Now I'm doing Mission 9 on Normal, and I just want to know WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE REGAL DRESS VTs SHOOTING AT ME? I'll be going "doo de doo" blowing up Vortexes and Scare Faces, and then along comes a Regal Dress and two hits later I'm punching out. !@#$

Has anybody sank the battleship using a Vitzh yet?

Hey, if any of you are still playing (or starting to play) Steel Battalion, check this site out:

http://steel-battalion-clan.pippin.us/

They've got forums, movies, and detailed walk-throughs for the 2080 campaign, in case the Zhen Yan has been giving you trouble. Or you keep getting cut down by the Jaralaccs NS in the Na Jiang Military Factory. Or the Juggernaut keeps sticking it to you in Xin Feng Tian.

I post there under my nom de guerre "rhindle".

Ha. After innumerable hours of play over eight months, I have completed both the 2080 and 2082 campaigns! In rookie difficulty. I love my 430-sb.

Veteran mode campaign 2082, here I come!

In other news, with Steel Battalion: Line of Contact now scheduled for a March 2004 release, man, I'm bummed. Anybody know why the previousy-reported October 2003 release date isn't happening?

Also, I have sank the battleship in Veteran mode using a Vitzh.

Mad skillz! LOL

I mean, you let Oscar 1 and 2 take the heat from the first group of Scare Faces, then you go through and mop up whatever VTs you feel like mopping up, and then you let Oscar 1 and 2 lead the assault on the last group of VTs. Once they're toast, you just shoot the Zhen Yan. Repeatedly! And don't get hit!

I think I had to eject the first two times I tried it. And it was Mission 4, not 14, btw. I don't know if the Vitzh's weapons have enough range and power to take down the missile destroyer in 14.

Well, man, it looks like it's just you and me that still have any interest in the moldy old Steel Battalion.

Ha. I finally beat Steel Battalion in Armageddon mode. That would be the sixth time through the full game for my pilot. Plus five extra times through the 2080 campaign (twice for supply points, once for combat points, and twice for decorations).

I think I'm through for a while. I'll come back later and rescue Sergeant Arnold and Lieutenant Silverstar, but I have to send my footpedals in for service. After 110 hours, one of the two springs in the accelerator pedal gave out. So for the last ten hours, I got to use a light touch on the gas.

Armageddon mode is unfuckingbelievable.

"Thank you for fighting it through to the end."

Haha I would still play if I hadn't packed it for the move...and wasn't moving again really soon.

But you all have much more to say than me....that damn battleship kept kicking ass over and over :(

It's not that I don't know how to do it....its that I usually end up doing something really really stupid :D
