As I sit here typing my "contributions" to the forums, my monitor is starting to act weird. The image will suddenly expand by a few percent for a brief moment and then shrink back to normal. Or else it briefly goes darker for a moment and then returns to normal. Sometimes it makes a brief humming noise as it does these things.

So I tried degaussing it and it's still acting up, just maybe not as often. My first theory is that my monitor is in its death throes. Which wouldn't destroy my life, since I have a spare sitting in the attic. My second theory is that my house current is fluctuating or otherwise dirty. I do have the monitor plugged into a surge protector, however. Theory three: Poltergeists. Theory four: Monkeys.

I know that this isn't really a console problem, but I also know that all of the smartest DP technicians hang out here. Help!

Ok, sounds to me like your monitor is going through it's death throes, unless you are familiar with monitor repair. As far as the screen expanding and contracting horizontally, it could be several things in my experience. 1. Your horizontal width coil is bad. This is a possibility due to the location of it on the PCB. Depending on where the manufacturer put it, it can become brittle over time from heat exposure, and start to fail. Option 2. Your Horizontal output transistor is bad. Not too likely, in my opinion as it usually will wipe out 2 or 3 caps, blows the fuse on a dead short, and you get NO picture at all. However, it is remotely possible that it's going, but not gone yet. 3.Could be bad capacitors. Unfortunately, without the proper tool to check them in circuit (about $150), you have to know which ones you are looking for, pull them off the board, and check them with a meter (very tedious and time-consuming). As for your picture going darker and lighter, it sounds to me like the flyback transformer is bad. I apologize if I have lost you by the wayside here, if you're not familiar with monitors at all, this must sound like garbage to you. Basically, plain English/layman's terms, unless you are very technically proficient with monitors, or your monitor is very high-end and worth spending time/money on, get a new one. Or just drag the old one down from the attic. If you have never opened up a monitor before ,DON'T!! You can get a very nasty electrical shock from these things if if they are unplugged. You could even end up in the hospital or worse! I cannot stress enough, if you are in question at all as to what you are doing, pay someone else to do it, or throw it away. On the flip side, from the third floor of a parking garage, a monitor will explode like a watermelon :D Cheers!!

Can we get a hand for good, reliable tech support? LOL

Thank you, sir, for your in-depth analysis. Which clearly tells me that I am out of my depth insofar as possible repairs go. But I do like that parking garage idea! LOL
