Are the game values/raritys usualy about the same between the mega drive and the genesis?

Am I just missing the mega drive section of the collectors guide/database?

Thanks in advance for the info,
-james

In my experience, not really. Some Megadrive games were very rare, when their Genny counterparts were dirt common. Obviously with a library this big it's hard to make a generalization.

And from what I understand, they are still working on a Megadrive Section for the DP guide :)

Sonic the Hedgehog is supposed to be much rarer on Mega Drive than Genesis. R7 i think.

Generalizations seem to be a bit bad. Usually MD games go for more than their Genesis counterparts. It seems Herzog Zwei is about even in price I've seen it going for between both places. Strider and the Golden Axe games - for example - are pretty thick on the ground in Japan. I've started seeing Golden Axe III for less than $20 on eBay (that's a MD exclusive, though), which should be encouraging.

Some games on the Mega Drive are MUCH more uncommon (and pull down over $150) than their US counterparts. Here's some prices I've seen for mint copies in various internet stores:

Comix Zone ($190 when I first saw one)
Virtual Bart (VERY expensive last time I saw one, though I haven't exactly been looking for it)
Konami stuff:
Vampire Killer ($170 or so...little note on this one: The title doesn't include the kanji for Akumajo Dracula, but everybody knows what you mean when you say Vampire Killer)
Contra The Hard Corps ($150 and climbing)

Is anybody going to make their money back in play value from these games? Nope. It it worth it if you're a dedicated collector looking for the coolest versions of these games? Yes.

Humm...The reason that I ask is that I just picked up 5 games from my fav game store and was wondering if they were worth anything. Maybe somebody can help. The games are:

Columns
Galaxy Force II
Shining Force (This is listed at $40 on the genesis, so I am hoping that it is also valuable on the MD)
Super Thunder Blade
Thunder Force II

Thanks for any info,
-james

PS: I am terribly sorry to post a "how much is this stuff worth" question given the current sticky on the forum, but I find ebay way too unreliable to use.

Out of interest, are we talking Japanese Mega Drive games here? Don't forget that us Europeans had Mega Drives too, hence my confusion when reading about Sonic the Hedgehog's rarity further up this thread!

I am pretty sure that all 5 of the games I listed are the Japanese version since they all have japanese writing on them. What is strange though, is that the lebels on the front of the carts are in english; while the top labels are in japanese. Thunder Force II also has english on the top label.

Hi all,

I am the owner of said "fav game store." I am quite pleased to have been mentioned in these forums. Thank you, James. I recognized those games that I sold you right away. I have two more for you now. Both choice Koei Japanese MD titles.

What game store is that? I keep trying to line up a trip to Denver -- sounds like I'll have to bring more spending money than I thought!

The store is called Cool Stuff. I've mentioned it before in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40564&highlight=7800). As I have stated numerous times, the guys that work there are awesome. True gamers. It was they who first turned me on to digital press. They are Lakewood, CO. If you are even in the area, check 'em out.

Geoff: nice to see that you have finally decided to join in as an active member of the forums. You seem to have a lot of knowledge that might be of use to the DP community.

There's a good point. While I suppose I want to pick up the Shining Force games for the Genesis someday, I already own *all* the cartridge releases for the Mega Drive. None of them are very valuable - maybe $20-ish.

Isnt the japanese "The Ooze" meant to be one of the harder games to find ? Its got that really funky cover and you wouldnt know it was the ooze till you tried it..

PAL Mega Drive games are already covered in the DP database (Genesis - Non-US releases). I'm working on the MD-J list (slowly, I'm quite busy at the moment), but have no plans to add rarity/pricing for now, since for probably 80% of the games I wouldn't have a clue, and haven't got the time to trawl eBay logging prices.
If there's any Japanese Mega Drive experts who fancy helping out with rarity/pricing info, please get in touch!

Of the games you mention, none are worth that much. SF is probably the most interesting, but Japanese versions of almost all the RPGs are more common than the Western releases, and the language barrier means it's generally only of interest for collecting's sake.

And I hope that whoever said Sonic 1 is R7 was joking. No MD version of it is rare by any stretch of the imagination.

Sure is. Probably in the top 5 rarest MD-J games, and expect to part with at least the best part of $200 for it.

Yup the Jp version of The Ooze was mail order only or something and barely got released at all....very odd. Also, Shining Force (Jp version) isn't rare at all...worth aropund $15 usually. Never expect Jp games to be worth the same as their US counterparts :D

I was in Tokyo a few weeks ago, and saw a copy of The Ooze for about $600 in Super Potato (a great used game store).

The next week I saw one for around $300 in Osaka. I briefly considered buying it and selling it back in Tokyo. ^_^

The box "art" is totally weird. It's mostly text.

For those keeping score, the Japanese version of the recent Sonic Mega Collection has Comix Zone *and* The Ooze as unlockables (source (http://www.gamesasylum.com/showarticle.php?articleID=1267)).

I'm not sure that the Ooze actually is in the top 5 priciest Jap Megadrive games .. sure, it is worth $200 or so, but there are quite a few in that league.

WWF Raw, Justice League Task Force and Virtual Bart spring to mind as probably being more expensive and I am sure there a few others too.

You can get Shining Force for next to nothing if you're eagle-eyed. The reason that Golden Axe 3 is down so low is that some guy in Thailand has a warehouse full of them that he has been selling on ebay for the last couple of years at least, for $12 a pop.
