So I have my collection posted on IGN, but i was just wondering how accurate is the value of a collection they post to real life?
(I dont know if this has been asked before I wrote this)

Crazy Over priced. Your collection probably isn't worth half of what they say it is. :o
Don't even reffer to that, your better off gathering up all the DP prices (which are generally low).

Well, new stuff is given nearly retail prices (or is that flat-out retail prices? I don't remember) but much old stuff isn't valued at all.
I'd rather use MS Notepad to keep track of my collection (Currently, I don't) because of all the imports and crazy stuff I've got.

I like the IGN collection listing. It has a lot of games in the database and I like the way it breaks it all down, but yeah, they value games way to high, though not as high as 1up.com

I prefer my Excel spreadsheets and the DP Guide myself.

That is quite alot, too much it seems.
I think ign bases their prices off the used price the game goes for at their store used. If a game is not listed in the store I think the value is around 25 dollars regardless if its E.T or Air Raid.

I added Starfox Weekend just to see what it would do and it bumped me up 20 or 25 bucks. It values all games at about 20 bucks. Also another problem is it only values a single copy of each game.
I dont think there is really any way to get a very accurate pricing on youre stuff. DP is way off on some stuff, IGN is WAY off on most stuff, pricing guides only go on averages that can be off anyways.
Basically a game is only worth what somone will pay for it.

value isnt accurate for shit, but at least it has almost all the US release games which allows for easily shared listings of your collection.
i used IGN as well as an Excel sheet....IGN has just my games and my Excel sheet has pretty much everything i own....i dont have store displays and a few magazines on my list, but other than that, everything is there
The problem with the IGN list is that it's missing a bucketload of imports for older systems. My Genny and TG collections are larger than what the list reflects but I can't add many imports like Curse, Dynastic Hero, or Legend of the Valkyrie to my list.

Don't even pay attention to their value =\. I was pretty surprised the other day, after a few emails and about two months, they finally added spiritual warfare for the genesis. Geez that took a while. I think I need to get them to add magical dinosaur tour for the tgcd as well, that wasn't there the last time I checked.

If you can't find a game in the IGN list, you can just e-mail them. They'll ask you a few questions about the game and add it in a fewdays. I've only done this once with a NeoGeo game, but I'm sure it'll work for anyone.

I tried to get them to add an arcade game to their list... but they never did it...

Oh yeah, the value is way over priced. I would rather that not even be on there because it's so damn inaccurate, but would really be impossible to be accurate. So just not put it on there.

I tried over well over 5 months ago to get a game added. I sent them an second email 3 weeks after the first. Then i gave up.
RFgeneration.com is the best one i have personally used. It doesnt have a fake price guide but it does have most US releases some European and Japan. If one is missing you put it in the forum and it gets added in quickly. Anything that is missing info there is a place where you can select that specific game provide the missing info and that gets corrected in under 2 days tops.
I know i have talked about it elsewhere here.

hmm.. guess I must've lucked out. After I emailed them to add it, the game was listed two or three days later.

Would searching the completed listings on eBay and averaging them out be the most accurate way to check a price on a game? I'm thinking of making a script to do that, just all the problems I come into. Like if someone included it in the title for a huge auction with 50 other games. Maybe if a price isn't remotely close to the others, I wouldn't include it, I duno ;o.

I dont agree with their prices, but then I dont agree with DPs either. I mostly use the IGN prices as an excuse for my colection. Its hard to call something a waste of time or money when you have $$numbers to back it up. Even if you know them to be false. Here its small and insignificant in numbers. When I go out and talk with people that dont play games though, its huge.
As far as their game selection goes, It for the most part is good on domestic. I'm not overly surprised that their import selection leaves much to be desired as even DP's has stuff thats not listed. The problem I have with IGN is that they dont have every domestic released title for systems that only go back to the GB.

HELL NO. Well, not really. Because I have seen games that sell as low as 10 and as high as around $130+. That's just too big of a space. You definately can not use ebay for a price guide. :)

i think the biggest use of ign is that you can check other peeps collections rather easily, not to mention the game boards listed with some games, as far as adding games, if you have detailed info they usually get back to you within a day or two.
too bad more sites didn't adopt a standard, like say the DP one, which i've come to rely on and trust.
and for all the talk of ign's overpriciness in terms of value, at least games like chronotrigger and other "squaresoft savings bonds" as i call them aren't listed for 100's in value, which imho aren't so much better or as rare as say LTTP which can be had for $10cib or in my case $5 sealed. but we all know how evil ebay is and how it's dark dark tendrils swirl around the collecting/retro-gaming community affecting everyone in some form or other. The catalogue is huge, and they are super quick with submissions (import or otherwise). Pretty nice.

Well then, if the game sold for $130 and $10, it'll be worth $70. Hmm, I believe eBay is the only accurate pricing you can get.
If an average e-bay sale for a game isn't good enough for price information, what is? How do you determine how much a game is worth without DPs pricing info? Where do the editors go to figure out a price in the DP guide?

Ebay is unreliable as well. The prices of games go up and down like crazy. I don't know if you rember the panesians a few months back but tehy sold for like 900 then 400. It's very hard to get an average of prices. Just watch for a long time. What pops up here, ebay, online stores, cge.

Pst... that's why he uses an average. You now the in-between number that the game usually sells for.

For obvious reasons, I prefer the below mentioned database/website.
You can add a game instantly, and there are lots of obscure stuff and japaneese games to begin with.
