Just a single picture here (http://zip.4channel.org/v/src/1097571475333.jpg).

ClassicB has posted a link to an original picture on Lik-Sang's website.

It appears somebody either is having a joke at the expense of gamers online, or is trying to sow seeds of discontent subversively.

Thanks to all who commented on this!

Can we get a side-by-side with an original Game Boy?

Not from me, unfortunately, as I don't even HAVE a GBA or Game Boy. Just a Game Boy Player and SGB.

Should be simple enough to take a photo of a GB side by side with an original GBA and 'shop it into the picture or scale it down alongside the main picture.

But yeah, the original GB is smaller than that, I'd say. Been a while since I've seen one.

That really doesn't look right at all to me.

In one of those pics from one of the DS press conferences or whatever, Iwata (I think), was holding the DS in one hand:

Yeah, here you go:

http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20041007/capt.tok10310071109.japan_nintendo_tok103.jpg

Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't look *that* big.

It's not like he's stretching his fingers all the way out either - his thumb is wrapped around too far for that. I guess it'll be just a little wider than your standard CD case (which I can hold in my hand the same way as Iwata's holding that DS), unless it's drastically increased in size from the original design idea.

That GBA in that picture looks unusually small actually :?

Get the feeling someone's taking the piss here, folks?! I have seen a pic of the two machines side by side and believe me this is a joke! In that pic it's about the size of a feckin' laptop! LOL

Title updated to clear up that I'm not supporting this as confirmed as opposed to a Photoshop creation.

However, you can see the shadow of the guy's hand and the GBA behind the unit. Multiple shadows from multiple light sources.

As somebody (as usual) has posted a not-quite work-safe picture there, I can't in good conscience link to the page; plus SQL is down so a link to just that topic won't work (you can't even read all the replies).

Here's the most interesting visible comment, by an anonymous person, unfortunately:

I tried it myself at Nintendo's Gamer Summit in Seattle. The units were only attatched by a security wire so it was easy to pick up and hold. I was wearing size 38 Dockers 'Tec Pants'. The DS did not fit in the standard pocket, nor in the zippered side pocket (which normally holds an HP iPAQ hx4705 PocketPC just fine). I'm a grown man and the DS is too big for my pockets. I doubt the children who will be getting DS's for christmas will fare any better.

To my eyes the ds in that pic looks like some sort of plastic dummy model...

Look at the size of the guy's thumb on the GBA....if that were right, your thumb would cover something like nearly 1/3 of the GBA screen.

Next, look at how pixellated the picture of the DS is compared to the picture of the GBA.

Also, the Nintendo logo is spelled: "Nintendoo" on the DS stand

Finally, look at the shadows the GBA is NOT casting and the ones the DS is.

Conclusion: Photoshop job to make the DS look bigger than it is.

That photo has been doctored.

I have rather large hands, and the GBA goes from the base of my palm to the second knuckle of my fingers. So this guy must have HUGE hands if it fits entirely in the palm of his hand.

Additionally the screens on the GBA and DS are the same size.

And finally, look at the pixelated photoshop goodness between the GBA and the guy's hand.

The real dimensions are:

(when closed): width: 148.7 millimeters (5.85 inches)
depth: 28.9 millimeters (1.13 inches)
height: 84.7 millimeters (3.33 inches)

compared to the GBA's:

Width 144.5mm
Depth 24.5mm
Height 24.5mm

I knew I had seen that pic somewhere! I have looked everywhere for that picture since I noticed this topic. At least I know I'm not going mad :)

If the anonymous person on the unmentioned forum thinks that's funny wait till he sees the size of the PSP (with separate battery pack!)! PS: I'm not trying to flame here so don't shout at me, ok!?

I can't go into details, but if I turn my eyes towards my left at this very moment, I can tell you the DS is much smaller than I thought it would be.

Topic edited :)

I thought there was something funny about artifacts around the DS d-pad versus that of the GBA (in particular), but I figured this would be cleared up in due course if it was a fake.

Thanks to all!

That's awesome. I wonder if there are more people out there with Early DS units - can you tell us anything of the wireless capabilities?

I didn't ask you to, but thanks for the sentiment...actually, I don't really care, because it's nice to have rumors debunked and a record easily found. Yay internets.

Thats actually a TERRIBLE photoshop. Look where the GBA meets the hand, it gets all bumpy. Not real.

You're funny. That part actually was NOT edited. The DS is the part that was.

No, you're funny.

BOTH were edited. The GBA was shrunk, and the DS was enlarged, while the hand and stand remained the same size.

Ugh, I see it now. I was looking further along the hand. Yeah, that's pretty obvious now that I see it. Well, there's strike two for me. I better keep quiet >_<

Sorry for that.

Folded up, there's no reason that wouldn't fit in a pocket...it's much smaller than I had anticipated...
