It was basically a subscription service in Japan simillar to the Sega Channel. BS Zelda was a remake of the first Zelda game for the service.

The unfortunate thing about many of the Satellaview games is that a lot of them still aren't emulated properly (or work only on very particular emulators) due to the nature of the Satellaview hardware. (It's been said that it added extra RAM to the SNES.)
I also suspect that when originally "broadcast", there was a televised audio track synched with some of the games, which is why many of them have odd periods of silence. They'll never be quite the same. At least BS Radical Dreamers (the text-based sequel to Chrono Trigger, for which an English translation patch exists) works perfectly; even if the text-based nature of it bothers you, Yamauchi's music work is still incredible.
As for the Zelda games, get yourself some patches (and screenshots) at http://donut.parodius.com/?func=trans&platform=snes&gamekey=262 and http://donut.parodius.com/?func=trans&platform=snes&gamekey=605 .

you know...it would've been really sweet if they put this out for gba when they released the classic series...could've put a code or something to get this remix...THEN i might have actually bought it.

Not very likely.
The BS Zelda has never been properly emulated, and likely won't be for some time. It basically featured the Satellaview mascot instead of Link, and was timed. The hacks that fixed the issues no longer work with Zsnes, as Zsnes has improved greatly.

Actually, in BS-X Zelda you can choose the boy or girl, so you've got mascots :P
It's a very good remake of the original Zelda, even using a little bit of Mode 7! It's a shame it was timed.
As for a synchronized audio track...the system was on, broadcasting data on one channel. I don't think they had the technology to encode the broadcast with both data and sound, as the BS-X would have to differentiate between the two somehow. Possibly these odd periods of silence are due to the rushed nature of the programs.
I think the best argument against there being audio tracks sent, though, is that you couldn't start downloading a game at any old time; you needed to turn it on before the download started (probably when a synchronization signal was broadcast), and supposing there was any free space after the download, you COULD put music in there. Yet as the BS-X didn't save this music to cart, it's safe to assume it would have to be played just as it appeared off the signal, which would lead to music not corresponding to elements in-game, and would require the BS-X to hold a great deal of extra ROM in determining when to play and fade out the track. The system was only up during a set time period, so if you missed the download you couldn't ever make it up - and it's hard to believe they'd broadcast some music you'd only be able to hear once. The whole idea of the BS-X was that you'd be able to download games to play at your leisure (apparently the BS-X Zelda was an exception?) - games that wouldn't require you go to the store and...well, the whole idea was a bit strange, but apparently a few people bought into it.
That said, it's a really pretty good theory. I find it hard to believe that even Nintendo would be obnoxious enough to suppose that gamers would buy a downloadable game storage cart and the system just to play a game that wouldn't be available in its entirety after a two hour period, ever again.

any chance of anyone recreating the first zelda in 16bit like this, without the use of what was already emulated?
id love to play this, but if its unplayable now due to znes updates or something, or isnt complete i dont care for it.
but itd be cool if someone redid this in a fully working rom

Holy crap there's a ton of games for this thing.
Nevermind that bit about Nintendo not supporting the console well enough. Users must've gone through cartridges like mad on this system. At present, this is more games than I have SFC titles total!

I had the working roms of a hacked up version of Zelda BS-X (so it was almost fully playable) and also had Star Fex 2 SNES - really nice that my computer crashed and I lost those two, as well as a slew of all of my other emu related stuff.
Zelda BS-x was cool, but the absence of music in many areas always bothered me. I'm a music man (right here in river city)

The hacks that fixed the issues no longer work with Zsnes, as Zsnes has improved greatly.
That depends on what you mean by "improved". Like I said, it's pretty easy to "break" the emulation of some of the BS games. (For a few versions, BS Ko Hai Balance was actually crashing ZSNES.)
I think the best argument against there being audio tracks sent, though, is that you couldn't start downloading a game at any old time; you needed to turn it on before the download started (probably when a synchronization signal was broadcast), and supposing there was any free space after the download, you COULD put music in there. I'm still thinking that's what happened. BS Zelda reportedly stops at times and tells you to "listen closely" (although there's nothing out of the ordinary to listen to during the emulation). BS SMB USA (when run under SNES9x 1.29 or earlier) is neatly synched to a half-hour clock, and the character portraits that appear would certainly seem to have had speech connected to them originally. BS Wario has the cutscenes from Wario's Woods without any text, although admittedly it is hard to see how they could synch the cutscenes with a broadcast audio track.
Anyway, at least some of the games were "rebroadcast", so it's not quite like you'd only have one shot at it.

Actually, the BS-X cart was more for Save RAM. From what I understand, the games were stored on the Satellaview system itself. That is why some of the Satellaview roms are missing: because it was difficult to dump them. There was definitely a limit to how many games you could have. Most of the missing roms are just online magazines anyways, so it isn't a huge loss. And BS emulation is far better now that it ever has been. The reason why some games worked before was due to bugs in emulation.

On what do you base this statement?
I notice that the patched version of BS Treasure Conflix indeed no longer locks up in the June ZSNES WIP, as it did in many previous versions. It has all kinds of corrupted graphics, though (unlike before).

Pretty much. There was actually a little translation patch just released for that one. It has some pretty nifty features, especially if you run it under SNES9x 1.29 or earlier, like I said; the really cool stuff is broken if you try to run it under any other emulator.

Where do I get the basis of this information? Basically, the developers of the emulators said so. Previous work arounds were due to hacks and such. They are working on improving it further right now, if you go to the zsnes development board.
