A few weeks ago I was browsing eBay, when I came across an oddly colored original Game Boy. It looked authentic, and had a reasonable bin. I emailed the seller, asking if the color was real, or if it had been painted. After I read his reply, that it was not painted, I went back to buy it. Too late, someone beat me to it. Nooooo!

So, anyway, I was searching eBay again today, and what do I see? The same unit has been relisted! yeah buddy. I bought it right away this time.

The rarity guide doesn't list this color scheme, but it comes in the clear plastic case like the other colored Game Boys. As far as I can tell the colored GBs were released in cardboard boxes outside of the US. So, does anyone have any info on this unit? Is it a US release, or a foriegn release someone slapped in a clear box?

I can't wait to get it in the mail to find out more info. And I'm sorry if this falls under the "How rare is my crap?" banner. I tried to do my homework first. :o

Very common actually

here we go, the Play it Loud Colors that were released back in April of 1993 each was released in those plastic hard cases, holds 4 AA Batteries and a few game paks, I had the clear-one upon release of that year.

Some stores even included a free pair of "Play it Loud" sunglasses (I.E. Sears, Toys R Us)

Mustard Yellow
Ketchup Red
Charcoal Black (which is the one you have purchased)
Relish Green
See-Through Clear

nope, I've seen too many lately, see black is always a popular color, so the demand was great and the one that is left behind is usually green or red.

I thought this was the charcoal black version;

The Charcoal version has grey buttons a screen cover, with purplish writing. In fact, I believe all the Play it Loud line had Grey buttons and cover. The one I bought has tourquoise buttons and cover, with bright pink writing. I'm sure it's from the Play it Loud line, maybe a Tru exlusive, or some such similar release? Unless the color is off in that photo, and those buttons are really grey, which may be the case. That'd be ok , though, I need a Charcoal still.

The rarest in my experience is the Yellow. I have never seen a US version. Tons from the UK, but not here. Clear and Green seem to be the most common, with Red and Black falling somewhere in between.

After comparing the two pictures, Ebay and the link you just provided, could it be sun faded over the years perhaps? It's hard to tell, because in the Ebay auction you can see the sun's reflection on the GameBoy...but who knows, I need a 2nd opinion on this

That reminds me, has anyone seen a pair of PLay it Loud sunglasses for sale on ebay? I have my old pair but I'd like some in better condition.

I remember when they came out, and they were all over the place. They aren't rare, but I surprisingly don't actually see them too often anymore. I see the many colours of Game Boy Pockets all over, and of course, Game Boy Colors, and the original GBs are more common than anything, but I rarely do see these coloured original GBs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems the clear ones are even harder to find than the black ones? I seem to see yellow and red the most when I see them.

I think it's just the way the photo looks...

i can get one of those for 10-15 locally at the game shop. they have at least 20 different play it loud gb's, and that is not even counting all the colored gb pockets, and gb colors.

the play it loud ones are pretty cool though.

I agree, I think that it is just a bad photo jobby.

You'll have to let us know when you get it what the colors really are.

Though I've never heard of a Tennis bundle.

Heh, I've got one of those Game Boys laying around. I actually bought that one first, and then bought a regular grey one later.

EDIT: Rare or not, $16 is a heckuva price. Congrats. I've been trying to collect all the Game Boy variants myself.

Yeah, like I said, I need a Charcoal anyway. So, even if it's not something odd, I'm happy.

Neither have I, I suspect that it was just thrown in.

That's charcoal black.

The one he bought on e-bay, though... I have no clue what it's called, but I found one in my box of brick GB's.

Wait a minute. Are you saying you've seen one with blue buttons, or a regular charcoal one?

Well, I got the unit in today. It's charcoal. Oh well. The case still has some of the warranty info on it, so I can confirm it is in its original case. No eveidence of it being a tennis pack in, though. An email I received from NOA seems to indicate there were no colors produced, except for the five Play It Loud colors. Still, hope springs eternal, right

There are variations of GB colours though. For example, the first silver GB Pockets had silver screen borders/no LED, the later ones had black borders/LED. Both "silver" game boy pockets.

Yeah, but those are Game Boy Pockets. I'm just working on the old bricks for now. Pockets also came in many more colors and exclusives. BTW, I thought one of the silver pockets was a Toys r Us exclusive.
