Here are my utmost recommendations:

Chrocnicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

This is the best example of a licensed game being excellent. Even if you hate Vin Diesel (that's me!) or aren't all that interested in the movies it was based off of, this is an excellent game that features lots of tense encounters and sweet gameplay features. You'll use stealth to sneak up on guards and pop their neck, fight other inmates when incarcerated to further the plot along and get favors from guards/inmates and also run into lots of cool scenarios to approach in different fashions ("do I run n' gun, or do I shoot the lights out and turn on the eyeshine?"). Great game.

Deus Ex: Invisible War

I hate RPGs. I like RPG elements in action games (see: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, this one). It's a little more complicated than your average FPS, but the story is good and it's a nice touch how you can choose your goals (there are many conflicting goals, you have to choose who to work for). It's a great game that'll definitely draw you in if you're into sci-fi (I'm not so much, but still). Excellence.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

Wow, the third game and the third pretentious subtitle. Coincidence? Anyway, this one's a 3rd person shooter where you assume the role of a robot on his way to straighten out the bad guys and...aw hell, you won't really care about the story on this one. This one's cheap and lots of fun.

Kill.Switch

This one's pretty fun. It's kind of like a free-roaming 3rd person Time Crisis (if that made sense). You don't just run and gun in this one but instead rely on objects (crates, pillars, couches, etc.) to give you cover from enemy fire. The story is garbage, but the game's fun. Above average bang for the buck.

Timesplitters 2

By Free Radical, many members of whom developed Goldeneye. Play-doughy graphics and non-bleeding characters aside, this one's a good deal of fun in story mode (even has co-op!) and has many multiplayer modes to keep you busy for ages. Well worth the sub-$20 price tag it goes for these days.

This last recommendation isn't so much a FPS as it is a 3rd person action game, but it has never gotten the attention it so woefully deserves, and I try to remedy that whenever the situation arises to do so, without furtheir adieu...

Phantom Crash

A fast-paced arcadey mech game set in a post-apocalyptic future (is there any other kind in the game/movie world?). You command a 'scoobee' that can be custom outfitted in any way you see fit. There are dozens of parts for each style of mech allowing for near unlimited setups. It's tons of fun to build a great mech and get more cash to trick out your mech even more. The inventory in the parts shop changes daily so you never know what weapons, parts, paint jobs and whatnot you'll run across. It's tons of fun and one of the Xbox's many sleeper hits. Be warned that there's a fair bit of Engrish and the quirky Japanese soundtrack (which you can purchase tracks for in the game's music shop) aren't for everyone. Still, this one's about $10-15 and well worth three times as much.

Hope that helps!

any more straight up titles? like things based around real world weapons and settings? i like a good fantasy or sci-fi game but they often contain elements that screw up the essential thrill of a FPS.

i will surely be checking out Chrocnicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and halo is loaded and ready to go :) been trying to rent shellshocked but its never in at BB.

You will DEFINITELY want to check out Return to Castle Wolfenstein:Tides of war. Great game. great WW2 elements.
Also, if you are looking for more real world, i'll suggest medal of honor:Frontline...and if you can find it for not too much $, medal of honor rising sun.
Also, the first two james bond titles are quite solid FPS.
I'll also second the reccomendations for serious sam 1 and 2. cheap and fun.
shooters rock!

actually, if my sources are correct, Tides of War has a few extra levels. Operation resurrection starts at the point at which agent one is dead, correct? In Tides Of War, you play the levels prior to that as well, fighting with agent one....also in tides of war, when you beat the game, you get a FLAWLESS emulation of the original wolf 3d, all six episodes....it's awesome.
I'll admit that i bought all the bond games and the MoH games on ps2 as well. even though i had xbox. I buy anything i can on ps2. Except RTCW. I saw that the xbox version had more levels and the wolf3d emulation, and i jumped right in. (even though i quite badly wanted rtcw on ps2.....i may get it some day if it is cheap)

If you liked Syphon Filter (which is a 3rd person shooter) you should probably like the Splinter Cell games.

(I'm definitely a fan of both series anyway).

i also enjoyed dead man's hand as well, sure it's rough around the edges but there are no other wild western FPS's out there not too mention the fun i had with the gunfights on horseback, good frig around game if you can get it cheap, upcoming call of duty for the box should rock as well, the pc one sure did 8-)

I play alot of CounterStrike online, and i gotta say it's really good. Even though your in a squad, usualy it doesnt feel that way. Most of the time you can just run and gun.

Very good game. :)

The Ghost Recon games are perty good.
Red Faction 2.

I'm not a big FPS person but those are fun and time consuming.

Also, if you like RPGs, check out Morrowind...

Those Conflict: Desert Storm and Conflict: Vietnam games are sort of fun multiplayer coop, but really only if you have a projection TV or something that allows you to actually see what you're playing.
