I have been looking for a new Space Invaders variant to play and thought that you lot might have a couple of suggestions. I like games that svae your high score - there's nothing more annoying than not saving scores (I mean you Namco 5 in 1 joystick!)
I would have to say my favourite so far was my Arcade machine Galaga but unfortunately when I moved house I couldn't take it with me :(
Anything can be included: from C64 to GBA to Xbox and anything in between. But I would like some interesting twists to the game...

You abandoned a Galaga cab :shameful: ? Ach, you probably had no choice. My heart goes out to you, man.
My favorite SI variant is an arcade version called Return of the Invaders (Link) (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=R&game_id=9304). It's got some neat variations inthe formations and the like and some of the most addictive midi music you'll ever hear in an old game like this. Check it out in MAME sometime, it's worth a look.

Yeah, leaving the Galaga machine was one of the most heartbreaking things I've had to do (seriously). It was just the coolest thing I have ever owned...The thing only cost me £50 as well and it was in pretty great condition - Still, you gotta do what you gotta do, eh?
I am now looking fo rthe ROM of Return of the Invaders - I've always had a problem getting MAME to run properly on my machine but I'll definitely give it a blast when I find it! So far that's got a 100% recommendation :)

Wow, Return of the Invaders looks pretty decent, I'll have ot try that one. I have an old PC game called Super Space Invaders that is basically a graphical update (looks a bit like Return of the Invaders) but also adds powerups and a cattle mutilation wave and other such stuff. Not bad at all.

As some of you know, because of a move I had to DUMP my first six video games ... including a non-working Star Wars arcade game (mint-condition) that I had to GIVE AWAY because no one would even pay me the asking $25 for it at the time. Boy how THAT market's changed.

There's a super cutesy version in MAME from about 1995 with a subtitle something like "Invasion of the Lunar Loonies" that is a blast to play. Full of different types of invader, bonuses, bonus rounds, bosses, much easier play control, and other features found in postmodern videogames.
I haven't tried out Space Raiders yet...looks interesting, but I'm afraid the budget development might make it turn out to be totally unimpressive compared to any competent shooter on rails (i.e. Starfox 64, Sin & Punishment), but I'm not sure about that so I'm being quiet. Even so it should be fun.
Also, no discussion of Space Invaders related topics would be complete without my mentioning Stratovox and Galaxian 3 (which plays totally different from all the rest of these games, but is worth a mention anyhow). I own one of these...it's a secret which one, though ;)

I'd imagine it won't be Galaxian 3 as that machine is about the size of a small living room :P

There goes my MYSTERY TO EVERYBODY :D
I think you could quite possibly bomb the side of a Galxian 3 unit and find a whole Fairy Fountain inside LOL
