View Full Version : Happy but Sad

Well, I just packed up my Atari 5200 for the last time and sent it away to it's new home in King George, VA today. I'm very happy that I sold it, but I'm very sad to see it go. That system gave me alot of great memories. I didn't realize it until I was packing it up today, but that was the first thing that I unpacked when we moved into this house nearly 20 years ago. I remember sitting on the floor in my new room with nothing but it, a TV, and me there. At the time, it was the most important possession that I owned. All the rest of my stuff could wait to be unpacked, but that had to be set up right away.
So I have very mixed emotions about it being gone now, but I'm sure that once all of those new games that I bought with all the money that I made from selling it start arriving at my house, I won't miss it as much as I do now. I played Pengo for one last time before I packed it all up, because that was always one of my favorites, and also because I'm hoping to save up enough money for the MegaDrive version of Pengo, which is insanely expensive now.
So here's hoping that I do end up getting MegaDrive Pengo soon, because I know that I won't miss my 5200 if ever end up getting that game someday! Maybe I should just put all the money that I made towards that right now, but it would take every single dime of it and then some, so maybe I'll get it sometime after Christmas, if I end up with enough money to get it by then.
So wish me luck, I really want that import Pengo game, but it would be the most expensive game that I ever bought in my life if I get it, and that's just for a used copy! Over $200 plus shipping, so I probably really should save up all this money that I have now for it, since I'm so close to having enough to get it now, but the money is already spent, so I can only start saving again.

friendly tip: Pengo is much cheaper on the game gear. ;)(available in import flavour as well!)

Yeah I know, but the MD version is completely different! And it's a 4 player game! I don't know all the details on it yet, but I know I want that sucker! I want the GG version too, but it isn't so hard to come by that, or to afford it. So it's not just a port of the arcade game at all. I don't even know for sure if it includes the arcade game as an option yet. I hope it does, but it may not.
If I get it, I'll see what I can do about getting the ROM dumped. I dunno if it's been dumped yet or not, since I'm not really into all of that stuff yet, but if it's that rare and that expensive, then it should be dumped if it hasn't yet.
If anybody else knows anything about it, please let me know. All I know is that it's supposed to be insanely rare, so that's why it has an insanely high price. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. I dunno if it's 4 player alternating or 4 player simultaneous, but I get the impression that it's a party game like Bomberman, so just imagine 4 Pengos going up against a shitload of Sno-Bees and each other while trying to line up those 3 indestructible blocks of ice before everyone else does! That's what I think this game is. And I know it has a ton of levels too. So it has to be worth the money!

Yep, Pengo for the GG and the MD have both been dumped.

Well I just found out that it is a 4 player simultaneous game, so I am saving up my money for it as we speak. Call me crazy, but I wanna own that game.

Pardon me Sir, could you spare a quarter for a poor arcade junkie? Tiny Tim needs an ultra rare game, and the crops were hit with the blight this year!

I wish you luck in finding the game, but if you liked your 5200 and the game that much, why did you get rid of it?

I've already found the game, it's just waiting for me to be able to afford it. I sold my 5200 because I needed the money to help offset the cost of all the games that I've been buying lately, and I never played it anymore anyway. It was just sitting in my closet not working and taking up space for almost 20 years. So I finally decided to spend the money necessary to get it working again, so I could sell it and get some modern games that I've been wanting.
But after I finally got it working again and started testing all the games to make sure they all still worked, I was reminded just how cool it really was and now I'm all misty eyed over it. But that MD Pengo will ease my pain bigtime. I think I can get it in time for Christmas, with a little wheeling and dealing and alot of luck. So it will be mine very soon. It's only a matter of time and money. Then I will finally have somewhat of a holy grail in my collection.
I already have several games now that are probably considered holy grails to some people, but since I bought them all brand new back in the day, those games are just more of a happy coincidence that worked out in my favor to me. So I have Spiderman Web of Fire for 32X, and Panzer Dragoon Saga for Saturn, and all of that kinda stuff, but I only paid about $50 each for them brand new when they first came out, so they are just like any of my other games to me. I'm glad that they're so valuable now, but it didn't really take very much effort on my part to get them, so I kinda take them for granted.
But if I really do spend over $250 just for one ultra rare game to add to my collection, it will really mean something to me. It will become the pride and joy of my collection, and I will always remember how hard I had to work to save up enough money to get it, so it will be even more valuable to me. So it won't be so relatively meaningless to me as all of those other super rare games I already have that were very easy for me to get are, and thus much less memorable. It's not that I don't appreciate them all, because I really do, it's just that they don't give me that really special feeling like so many others here get when they finally get that holy grail that they had to save up for a long time to get, and they're posting their pics of it all over their websites.
I guess I just want something that stands out from everything else in my collection now, and I really don't have anything like that in my videogame collection yet. For my Hot Wheels collection, it's my unopened 25th anniversary edition Snake & Mongoose drag racing set from 1994, which only cost me $50 about 5 years ago, but it's still the centerpiece of my collection. But for my videogame collection, it's just a bunch of games that became very sought after and very hard to get after I had already bought them. Definitely nothing to complain about, but they just don't give me that same feeling of "Hey, this is really something really special to me, check it out!" So that's what I want the MD Pengo for, something that really stands out alot.
And of course as I already mentioned, I really do love the game, so I'm just dying to find out what the MD version is like. I meant to import it a long time ago when you could still get it brand new for cheap, but I kept putting it off because I thought that surely it would later be released here in the states. I don't know why it never was, because it certainly looks like something that would've done well enough, but we were denied it, and now I want it bad enough to spend that kind of money on it, if that's what it takes to get it. So the 4 player Pengo party will be at my house, and everyone here will be invited!
