I was just looking at Faria and Final Fantasy, both are accurate as far as rarity goes FF R2 Faria R5, my complaint is that every time I see Faria for sale, on Ebay, by friends or by collectors, it always seems to go for a lot more. I would list Faria at around $17 to $18 range, that game has gained popularity and also price, Final Fantasy, although dirt common is worth more than $7, I would list this at about $12. Every store I see this at sells it for about $15. Mermaids of Atlantis seems too low also, and that should be listed around $20. Does anyone else agree with me.

I agree. I think the NES section in general needs some TLC. It should be a rich and lively source of content but there still is very little there compared to many other systems, some of which were added much later.
It's no knock on the section editors, we haven't pushed for changes in the "classic" Guide sections in awhile but it would be nice to get an off-book year update :)

I think tne rarity of some game need to be update. Game like Pro Sport hockey and Donkey Kong Jr Math are more rare than expected.

Anyone who wants to post their input, please do. This could be the thread where we state the corrections and updates, then the moderators could update this every few weeks or months. There are plenty of updates needed besides the ones I stated above, AGC Inc. comes to mind also, I would list those in the $10 dollar range also.

I just looked up some nes games and there was some missing info in the also known as department. I searched for castelian and when you click the show all systems this game was released on tower toppler doesn't come up at all, also when you search for battletoads, the Sega master system "Battlemaniacs" doesn't come up, and is the SMS game "master of Darkness" the name Castlevania was given on that system? There are others just within NES searches, just figured I'd give the moderators a heads up. I love that the update to the search engine, I will go through my European nes list and do some serious aka updates too. Keep up the good work.

I'm guessing that's becasue SMS Battlemaniacs isn't also known as Battletoads. It features them, but was only ever released in Brazil, titled just 'Battlemaniacs'.
SMS Master of Darkness is a Castlevania-esque game, but it was developed entirely by Sega and had nothing to do with Konami's series.

Got ya on the Masters but the Battlemaniacs should still come up on a Battletoads search. Thanks for verifying the Masters of Darkness though.

No it shouldn't.
The "aka" field is specifically for identical games to be identified, not games featuring the same characters, "close to" the same game, or anagrams of them. :)
I'll give you Castelian although that's about as far as I'd stretch the rule.

That makes sense Joe, although I was doing some research on Yahoo last night and (will a foreign SMS expert verify this) from what I saw, the SMS Battlemaniacs game is the same exact game albeit toned down graphics, as the SNES game Battletoads In Battlemaniacs. If someone can verify maybe those should be linked together. I wish I could find that game for the SMS because I love Battletoads.

When Joe said "identical" it should be read as "same game for same system released under a different name". Otherwise, a game like "Humans" for Genesis would have an aka "Dino Dudes" for Jaguar, which would not be helpful as far as I can tell.

I'd think it would because some of the old classic systems come up that way, either way, maybe I'm just being too picky. But even if it came out for a different system and it is the same game with a diffrent name, It would be helpful to me because I would know that game x came out for system x as this name and system y as this name. It would give me a heads up in case i wanted to collect or play it. It's not my decision though, so either way I'll shut up now.

I agree that many games need updating as well, but Donkey Kong Jr Math is fitting of its rarity. I have possessed roughly 5000 cartridges and 6 of them have been DK jr Math. One was complete, 2 were with manuals, and 3 were loose.
I'm not saying that updating the guide would be an easily task though. I imagine that 100 hours would have to go into it unfortunately.

DK jr Math rarity his 5 IIRC. I think it should be at least a 6.
I have one loose copy and finding the box and manual is almost impossible (and probably worth more than the cart himself).

Yo Portnoyd, when you get to Zelda II make sure to include my easter egg from the previous thread, and the also the easter egg that allows you to save anytime in the game for both zeldas should be added. The values of both 6 in 1s and the panesian releases are valued way too low, I haven't seen Caltron go for any less than 200 anywhere including between collectors, myriad should be at least 400 IMO. Panesians, especially Bubble Bath Babes go for 350 to 400 range loose, the other two should be around 300 each! AGC INC. releases are also too low in rarity and price.

Will the NES section feature an article explaining variants or, conversely, will major variants be listed in the individual game descriptions? ie: Legend of Zelda listing would mention the later 'Classic Series' gray cart release along with the notable difference in rarity: gold is an R1, gray is maybe an R3. Also, I think that it should be noted when a certain component of a game is much more scarce than the cart. ie: Stack Up cart is R5, whereas a complete Stack Up would be more like an R8, or a DK jr Math cart is R5, but the Dk jr Math box is significantly more difficult to find. Such info is worth noting IMHO.

i agree completely. Major box/cart art variations are very cool to know and to have. I just discovered a new one this past week. There are two different cartridges for The Untouchables game (one blue w/ shadows and one with people from the movie). Also worth mentioning is color dreams/bunch games/Wisdom Tree cart color variations, and which ones are rarer.
Don't forget Power Blade 2; complete is a bitch to find and those stupid movie games Die Hard, Cliffhanger and Bram Stokers Dracula complete are as well.
Others worth mentioning...
Jetsons, ALL Atlus games (esp Wacky Races), race america (as if you didn;t know portnoyd), kid klown complete, clu clu land complete, i'd say every Al Bunch Game... and myriad 6 in 1 as the rarest released, not our beloved stadium events ;)
Just my thoughts. I would love to help if help is needed :)
I LOVE nes variations. anyone else?

there was also a hint book for maniac mansion.
you can't read what the hints were without a decoder, which was basically a plastic red strip you placed over the hints to read them.
ultima warriors of destiny had a hint book as well. ultima quest of the avatar probably had one too.

do the big posters that came with tengen games count as an insert?
Dr. Morbis
11-03-2004, 10:08 PM
I'm all for mentioning special inserts needed to make games complete like maps, charts, etc. But I think we should draw the line at stuff packed in with the game. ie: Shadowgate's hintbook isn't on Sniper's list, nor does it need to be. I would add F117 (theatre of operations chart) and Tecmo Super Bowl (Quick reference) to Sniper's list. And I would take out Faria and GI Joe, as those maps were mail order only. Other than that, Sniper's list looks complete.
I could post my complete list of major variants, if necessary.

No, they doesn't contains information necessary for the game.

Those with "?" are questionable.
California Raisins need to move to the prototype section (a cleanup is probably need in the proto/rumor mill section as well).

An R4 definitely and maybe even an R5, but definitely not an R7. An R7 put's it in the hardest 25% of games cross platform, which it definitely is not. There are still loads of new copies floating around that sell in the $15-20 range and loose carts tend to sell in the $5-8 range. A complete one on eBay a couple of weeks ago didn't even get the $4.99 starting bid.

I have to agree with Mike here, Camerica are more easier to find and R5 is good (maybe R6 could be good too).
A note about Action 52, seem "easier" to find in Canada, alot of members of the CGCC (including myself) was able to find it easily.
How about Titus's Blues Brothers ? Only Titus title ever on the NES, could it be upgrade to an R6

The color Dreams, AGC inc, and AVE releases seem to have slightly increased in value. I see most of the cheapies go for about 10 dollars now instead of the usual listing of 5$ that maybe something that should be looked at, the descriptions of the Color Dreams releases should include the rarities of the black cart versions, these should be listed the way that the neo geo mvs games are listed within the descriptions.
Dr. Morbis
11-13-2004, 10:05 PM
Regarding AVE's Maxi 15: both variations should be noted in the guide. One has Double Strike and Pyramid while the other has Death Race and Black Jack. I would put the Pyramid version at R7 and the Death Race version at R8. It is also worth noting that the large yellow cardboard box that this game came in (sometimes???) is quite scarce.
vintagegamecrazy
11-13-2004, 11:36 PM
Wow that should definately be noted in the database. I had no idea there was another version of Maxi 15, I have the one with Pyramid, that would in my opinion warrant a complete separate listing in the database because it does have different games on it. That is up to the moderators though, I guess.
Another note is that Challenge of the Dragon has gained popularity in the last few months. I have seen it consistantly go for $20 or more on ebay and even private collectors are giving it more attention and paying more for it even off of Ebay, that should also be changed in my opinion.
Duncan

I'll agree with that and add that the Wisdom Tree games used to be everywhere, but now seem something less than common in the wild. Only one I tend to see semi-regularly anymore is Bible Adventures.
Also, Camericas are basically nowhere, at least in my area. Did they have spotty distribution or something?
vintagegamecrazy
11-14-2004, 02:18 PM
Spotty distrubution is a strong consideration for both wisdom tree and camerica. I find at least one or two of the more common ones at my local stores that I hit regularly, Color Dreams on the other hand seem to have become harder to find.
I think NES in general is going to become much more valuable in the next year or so, one of the biggest factors that was keeping the prices low is that GameStop and EB (corporate retailers) were stocking them regularly and getting them on a regular basis, both of which have stopped buying classic stuff, the only places still buying them around me is Gamecrazy and Music Recyclery. With the prices that they give for a game being rather low, that will keep lots of NES owners from trading them in, thus making them less common to find in the wild on a daily hunt, sure private retailers will still carry them, but most won't get really rare stuff in very often (with the exception of Sean Kelly) and I still find nes at thrift stores pretty often, mostly goodwill, but they usually only get a handfull at any given time. To make a long story short I think that these changes will be a determining factor for the raise in price and rarity of Nes (and other systems) games for the future to come.

it's maybe worth noting that maxi-15 carts seem to be more common here.
i've found four or five of them so far as of last week. there were a bunch in a local store at one time.
here's some info i found on the different versions:
Title: Maxi 15 (Original Version)
Manufacturer: American Video Entertainment (AVE)
Release Date: 1992
Rating: Unique
Price: $30.00-$50.00, $100.00-$150.00
Location: 1, 2
Notes: If you buy anything from this company, go for this even though it can sometimes be pricey. You get fifteen different games, including a few that are really hard to find alone. Hilarious, unfinished opening screen, but a great game. This version was packaged in a cardboard box with typical inserts. Easier to find than the other version, but the same game regardless. It is impossible to differentiate between the two if they are loose. The featured games are Chiller, Deathbots, Double Strike, Dudes with Attitude, F-15 City War, Krazy Kreatures, Menace Beach, Puzzle, Pyramid, Rad Racket Deluxe Tennis II, Shock Wave, Solitaire, Stakk’m, Tiles of Fate, and Venice Beach Volleyball.
Title: Maxi 15 (Plastic Case Version)
Manufacturer: American Video Entertainment (AVE)
Release Date: 1992
Rating: Unique
Price: $30.00-$50.00, $150.00-$200.00
Location: 1
Notes: Exactly the same as the original version, only this came packaged in a really nice hard, plastic case. Never gets smashed and will definitely remain the most solid piece of your collection if you can find it. A little more difficult to locate than the other. This is the one I’d shoot for if you’re really thinking of looking for it. I’ve listed it separately because it’s so much cooler.

sniperCCJVQ: i was told by the guy running the store that the flood in 97 ruined all/most of them and they were sold to different stores and/or throw out. it's not much info but it's a start. i'd still like to find out if there are any more of them in this warehouse, if it's still there.
also, action 52 seems more common in canada. there were a bunch of people at cgcc that were finding them for awhile.

Interesting, I never knew the warehouse was ruinded in a flood. Thanks for that info.

I said the same thing in one of my replies in this topic. I found mine (complete) for 20$ CND.

Sachen game Q*bert should be Q Boy.
In the Penguin & Seal description it says that it was released as Antarctic Adventure by HES. It should be arctic adventure.

Super mario bros has some unfinished sentences in the listing.
Easter Egg
Press A and Start after a game over and you will continue on the last world you were on.
Are the color dreams color variants going to receive rarities at all?
Challenge of the Dragon is still worth at least $20 IMO, also, no non us release updates?
Why is the Arkanoid controller listed as rarer and worth more by itself, but the cart listing is worth less combined and more common, that probably should get changed.

I persononally think the game should be listed without the controller as an R3 (maybe 2)/$8-10. Looking at games like Stack-Up (which I don't think should be an R5, R4 tops), it's listed as cart only and the description mentions that complete it sells for around $150.

I was comparing the list of inserts/extras with what I have, and I'm questioning these:
-Dizzy the Adventurer: MAP. I acquired my ADE a long time ago brand new (with the inner seal). It came with 2 sets of instructions: 1 for the ADE, and 1 for Dizzy the Adventurer. The Dizzy manual is in the form of a fold out poster, but there was no map/insert in addition to that. Is this game's map listed erroneously, or did I somehow manage to get a mapless 'sealed' ADE? If it exists, can someone scan it or describe it?
-Solomon's Key: MAP. I know about the poster, but is there a true 'map' in addition to the poster? Perhaps the game was confused with Mighty Bomb Jack when listed? If it exists, can someone confirm/scan/describe it?
On a final note, if extras that did NOT come with the game are going to be listed in the guide (ie: Shadowgate hintbook) I think it should be made explicitly clear that they are mail order items. I don't think they should be listed anyway, because popular games had umpteen thousand books/guides that could be purchased in addition to the game. Where do we draw the line? I think it's best to list only items that were packaged with the game.

I agree with Shadowgate - if it didn't come WITH the game, it doesn't belong in there (unless noted otherwise).
I can confirm the Solomon's Key MAP. I just cracked my box open and it has a poster and a map. The map has a tiny representation of all the rooms, the map is entitled "Photo Map of Constellation Signs". I'll see if I can get it scanned for further proof but obviously this is all I need :)
Not sure about Dizzy, I've gotta find that one. Anyone else wanna check theirs?

Thanks for the input about the Solomon's Key map. I guess I've got some searching to do to locate one of those.
As for the Dizzy map, it may have been confusion with the Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy, as it came with a (rather useless) treasure map.

[quote="pseudonym"]both wizardry games might have came with hint books (adventure guides?)too. i'm only wondering if they're actually manuals...
do the big posters that came with tengen games count as an insert?[/quote
Both Wizardry games had send away guides. Their manuals were the same size as the Dragon Warrior adventure guides.
Might and Magic also had a send away guide
Dragon Warrior 2 came with a registration card that had an offer to order Limited edition Dragon Warrior 2 and 3 posters. The card states that their were 450 DW2 and 1300 DW3 posters available. I have the DW2 poster(along with Enix letter) Its actually a Labyrinth map on one side and a Monster/weapon/armour chart on the back. I have never seen or heard of anyone who has the DW3 poster/map.

I don't think we need to go crazy over all the special order items for each game, but all info is welcomed in my opinion. A simple mention in the game description just mentioning that it was available would be fine in my book.

Here's one for the variant collectors.
(sorry about the image, photobucket won't rotate any photos for some reason)

It's an Action 52 with an all black pcb board, I have seen only one of these before mine and it had a blue foil label on it. Most agreed that these are quite rare. This is probably worth knoting in the guide.

Does anyone have a Dizzy the Adventurer map? If no one comes forth, I guess it's safe to assume there isn't one. I know "you can't prove a negative".
Regarding Cheetahmen II: I think it should be noted that it has no manual (if it's not noted already). A complete copy would be just the cart and the box (and the orange warning card if you want to get anal).

Super Off Road is not listed in the NES game database ... at least I haven't found it using multiple search strings. Also, its not in Mike Etler's online database.

Another tip: we ALWAYS use the full, correct title for our games. Use that to your advantage! If you put "Ivan Stewart" in the title search box, for example, it may turn up something when you just KNOW it's there.

I typed in just "Ivan" looked down to NES and saw Indy Heat: __ SullIVAN. I didn't scroll down to the bottom to find the other thinking that they were listed by system and not title.

Stack up is worth considerably more than $7 I think it should say at least $40 maybe more, this game has grown on collectors lately and is fetching quite high prices, it should be a R5 at least too, I have never seen one in the wild before.
Snow Brothers has skyrocketed in value, I would say it should be rated around $40 as it consistantly sells on ebay for $40 plus, and a local store sold one for like $47.99
Contra Force is worth more than $15 I'd say it would be good at $25, it isn't exceptionally rare but has climbed in value.
Stadium events should go up in value, in consistantly outsells any panesian game and they are rated higher in the guide, a $400 price mark should still be on the low side.

Championship Rally (Australia only)
This game was also released in Europe in PAL-B format, just very hard to come by.
