View Full Version : Early PS2 model + dual layer disc = trouble?

I have an early model PS2 (30001) that plays DVD-based and CD-based (blue disc) games with no problems, as well as CDs, DVDs and PSX games. I want GTA San Andreas, but it's on a dual layer disc, and I'm concerned that even though my PS2 is quite reliable, it may have some problems with a dual layer disc.
The question is, am I right to be concerned here? I don't want to shell out $50 for a game I can't even play, and I cannot afford a new (or used) PS2 that would work.

My Ps2 is a piece of shit too, it won't play any blue-bottomed games. sucks.

I just took my 30001 PS2 in to the service center two months ago since it had the typical disc read errors on regular DVDs and PS2 DVDs. Hopefully it can read San Andreas' dual layered disc. I don't see why it wouldn't be able to unless it was worn out (which this one isn't). I bought the HD Loader right after I got the new PS2 so I won't wear it out. The only game I can't run from it is Midnight Club 2, in which there's no music when it runs from the HD, so that one I must run from my original disc. Otherwise, the HD Loader is great and should keep my disc drive as new as possible. I've heard of an exploit in which to install the HD Loader to the PS2 memory card's boot block. If that's true, it would be awesome, since I could completely eliminate the use of the disc drive all together (except for with MC2). I really hope SA will work perfectly with HD Loader, since I'll be playing it a lot! Can't wait until Tuesday the 26th!

What are blue disc PS2 games and how are they different from the rest of the games? What models play them, etc.....?

They are cd based games, and some ps2s crap out and can't read either dvd or cd based games. Some can't read either one.

I have the same problem, There's a simple fix.
Just grab some scotch tape and tape 2 small strips (sticky side down) on either side of the cd hole. It works perfect on all my games. I dunno why except it allows the holder to grip it better I guess.

HD Loader/Advance does not support DVD-9 discs at all.

Xenosaga is also a dual-layered disc, and my old-ass PS2 could run it. It did have the occasional insane load time, but I've never seen the game run on a newer PS2 so I don't know if that's normal.

From what I have heard it won't be a problem. I have no idea though. I'm selling my feet if I have to buy a new PS2 to play the game though. And it'll be worth every painful step to do it too.

ive got a 390001 and the only problem ive had with it is recently when the tray slides out it makes a lil diffrent noise, i tihnk it might jsut be that i had it on its side for a long time and now its flat and im jsut not used to the noise it makes, i dunno i cant wait for sa had the pre-order forever
