View Full Version : Mini PS2 -- Should I or Not?

I'm debating getting a new mini PS2.

My local EB has a offer where I can bring in my original model working PS2 and get $100 in trade in credit. Then I pay $50 to get the new model.

I don't care about no HD and my PS2 has worked fine since I got it in early 2001.

But I have'nt heard anything if these new PS2's have better and/or more reliable drives.

So -- need some advice. Anyone know anything for sure?

If you're PS2 is working fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Do you need the extra space that the mini-model will clear up?

I would go for it. A 3 year old PS2 is asking for laser errors. Plus I am a sucker for minitureazation (sp).

What I don't see is how the new model can clear us space if you own multiple consoles. It's top loading so my 3DO and Geo could no longer sit on top of it. That sucks.

I have also heard about some compatability issues with some PS2 games with the miniPS2. I'm not sure how trustworthy these complaints are, but it might be something to look into if you have a large PS2 library and play older games often.

Well, the drive WAS refurbished at Sony's factory in January 2003.

And no, don't really need the space.

i will be getting one....not right away though.....ill pick it up when it drops down to $50 like the mini PS1

as for you, if your not having problems, dont bother....these just came out and who knows how reliable they will be

I just got one. I called Oobgarm, for him to help me out, but he decided not to call me back, so I had to go it alone. Now my second PS2 is sitting there in its box all content waiting to be opened.

WEEEEE!

Yeah...if your current machine is running fine, then I can't REALLY see a reason to get the mini. However....I bought the latest version of the normal sized PS2 and the infrared, updated drive and hi-def features seem to make this one nicer than my old Turismo-pak machine was.

The only thing that I don't like about the mini is that there is no space for my harddrive.......which means that in a roundabout way Sony is saying "sucks to be you for wasting your bux on that harddrive that we have no plans to utilize."

I will also get the PStwo when the price drops, probably when the PS3 is out - But if your PS2 is working fine I dont see much use of the newer model..... unless you dont have an network adapter or you just like the new compact style.

I bought one. Same deal at ebgames. My PS2 worked fine, but it was a launch model, so you know that it was going to break sooner or later. The way I saw it, I got to trade in a four year old system for a brand new one and all it cost me was sales tax and some shitty launch sports titles. I guess if it turns out that they are less reliable or don't play some games properly then I will be eating my words.

I wouldn't do it.

Now that I've seen it in person I can say that is is VERY cool, but not something I'd want. It's so small and light that one tug on the controller will have the thing flynig across your room. Nah. Give me that heavy, bulky anchor of a thing anyday.

Holy smokes...I am fallin asleep at the wheel. I have been so busy....that I finally saw this model today. I was walking past the case at walmart and noticed the fancy packaging(not even really fancy but it's different) So, I looked at the box and think to myself....WTH?!? And I'm like...huh, then I see ACTUAL SIZE, wow....I wanna see one outside of the box. I bought a PSone for $25 and this will be no different, I must have one :D but will it load faster :D /Me Prays

(I say load times because now I can't use my HDloader....which I've gotten acustomed to with leisure suit larry, loadtimes BITE)

If you have a wonderful HD Loader, you'd have to be nuts to get a new mini PSTwo. :|

I just got one today. And it was about freaking time: I'll finally be able to finish that game of Shadow Hearts that I started over 2 1/2 years ago... that is, if I can remember where I put away my PS2 memory card...

Is it really that cheapy in weight?

The PSone is okay but the PStwo looks very thin, like toaster pastry thin.

BTW, I am very close to buying one...might go for it next week...waiting to see if they have a special at any stores...

Lady Jaye

It is very light. I haven't compared it with the PSOne to see which is lighter, but it makes the Atari 2600 jr. look big, bulky and heavy in comparison!

Don't be fooled by the retail box in stores, since it includes the power supply and the DualShock2 controller... in fact, methinks that the power supply weight more than the console itself...

Oh yes, what's the "HD Loader". Hopefully this won't sound as bad as "wats a top loader?" :)

SoulBlazer

Oh, the power supply is seperate in the new PS2 as opposed to being built in like it is with the original model and the XBox?

Blah. I'll stick with my PS2 for now then, guys. Thanks. :)

kevincure

Yeah, my one complaint is the power supply that's not built in. Actually, complaint two is that the red "on" light is always on and very bright.

It is very light, very small, and it cost me 17 bucks when I traded in my old PS2 w/ Network adapter and three older games worth nothing (like Tokyo Zero). It also has the built in IR (so I don't have to find an old-style remote).

Lady Jaye
10-22-2004, 10:31 AM
Well, lookit this way: the PSTwo's power supply is still lighter than the Colecovision's (which itself could be used as a self-defense weapon or as the weapon of the crime, à la Clue)...

The only power supply I have on hand these days is the GameCube one. How does it compre to that? :)

(Clue..... LOL )

The power supply for the PS2 is exactly the same size and weight as the power supply for my Dell Laptop. It's VERY small compared to the PS for say, a Commodore 64.

Lets you rip most PS2 games to a hard drive so you don't have to use the disc.

I want a mini PS2 as well, but I'm just gonna wait since

a) I love my HD Loader-ready PS2
b) I don't have $150 dispoasble at the moment
c) I eat live fish

A HD loader is a disc, made perfectly legally for purchase, that allows you to put a large PC HD into your PS2, and use it to back up your games onto the Hard Drive.

Example, I've backed up my GTA3 VC game to my HD. The game loads literally TWICE as fast. There is no wear and tear on my game disc. There is no wear and tear on the failure prone PS2 laser. No modchip required.

Too bad SONY has tried to sue them out of existence, and removed HD functionality from all future PS2's.

I'll stick with the older one that does more stuff thanks.

The fact of the matter is just what Omnedon has said, it's all in the laser. The only company that doesn't have huge optical drive problems is the Gamecube and people could always fight that they don't get used the same. Xbox's have optical problems, though far less than a PS2. Dvd drives just don't last forever. Those of you playing dvd's with a PS2, STOP NOW. As Flack has mentioned, the $30 apex is ok or I actually prefer a $50 or so model as they make a little less noise. Don't ruin your $150 PS2....

And the HDLoader rocks, I just wish they had a dongle attachment for the PS2 Hard drive. It's one thing when they take the functionality away from hackers but paying customers of the FF Hd, that's a blow to the head. I would actually prefer a dongle as it would save space as I don't always use my hdloader but more development might arise from this new model(pop top) I haven't even seen one in person but I think the poptop would be easier to hack unless they use reed switches.....which should be hackable as well!

I just got the new mini-PS2, and it is well-worth it. I traded in my old PS2 for it and it works perfectly, and looks really neat too. Also, it has a built-in Network Adapter which is always nice!

Highly recommended!

I got mine last night. Part of me wishes I waited until Friday. I went into almost debt to buy it.

But it's very cool. Very small. Very neat. I'm not disappointed. I wish I only paid $100 for it, I really hated paying $150. But it was worth it as long as I can find plenty of games to play.

Jak Trilogy
Ratchet Trilogy
Sly Cooper series
NFS:HP2
Ico
Fantavision
Katamari

Also, any photos of this Japanese external HDD? I am curious as to how it would be (hanging on the side like a mutitap, snapping on the bottom, etc...
