We definitely have run SMS versus NES into the ground. Do a search on SMS vs. NES - you'll find a topic for it :D

Even though Sega does what Nintendon't... I'd have to vote in favor of the NES.

Why, you ask? Well, the SMS dosen't have Bionic Commando.

Hmmm...

Should I vote for the Colecovision, Lynx, Game Gear, Atari 2600, Odyssey2, Arcadia 2001, or one of them even lesser-knowns?

I think I'll go with the Atari 2600.

Best 8-Bit system is pretty generic. For example, the NES and atari both use the same CPU (6502), but are incredibly different, I wouldn't really compare them. I would definitely say the NES/GB/C though.

The Atari Jaguar or the TG-16

Atari 2600.

Probably would have been better if you had made this into a poll or something... Although there probably already is one sitting around somewhere...

The Atari Jaguar or the TG-16
the atari jaguar is 8 bit!? since when??
and the tg-16 is somewhat debatable. if i knew it was gonna be a choice i woulda picked it too.

For some reason I just always assumed that the '16' in TG-16 stood for '16-bit'. If not that, then what?

Random Guessing™ ensues:

"Our system has 16 games, collect them all!"
"Our games cost 16 dollars each, please help us from going under!"
"Our games are a 1/16th the size of a normal cartridge game, don't lose em!"
"The '16' is dedicated to the 16 people who bought our system at release, thanks guys!"
"The 16th letter of the alphabet is 'P', draw your own conclusions!"
"The '16' is actually 'one six', purchase three and hail Satan!"

its got a 8 bit processor, and a 16 bit graphics chip..

It does stand for "16-bit", but NEC was referring to the graphics chips in the machine, which is really what you see most anyways.

NEC wasn't the only company to "cheat" with their bit designations either... Atari claimed the Lynx was 16-bit when it runs off of an 8-bit 6502 (although like the TG-16, the graphics chips could be called 16-bit)... SNK claimed the NeoGeo was 24-bit when it runs off of a 16-bit 68000 and an 8-bit Z80 (I guess they just added 16 and 8)... The Jaguar has 64-bit graphics processors and a 64-bit bus, so if the TG-16 can rightly be called 16-bit, then so can the Jaguar be called 64-bit.

The main point here is that grouping systems by "bits" really doesn't make any sense at all because it's far too vague a description of a system's power. One number is never going to really give you any idea of how capable a system is since each system has their strengths and weaknesses. Is it really fair to compare the Atari 2600 and the NES just because they're both "8-bit"? Of course not, the NES obviously has much more powerful video/audio chips in it, so it can run circles around the 2600. Does it matter if the TG-16 was running off an 8-bit processor? It still managed to compete with the Genesis and SNES.

The only real way to compare systems is to group them by "generations" (ie, Genesis vs SNES vs TG-16, 2600 vs INTV vs Odyssey^2, PSX vs N64 vs Saturn and so on)... although even that gets messy at times, since the ColecoVision is sort of half-way between the 2600 and the NES, and where do you stick stuff like the SegaCD and CD-i?

I still choose the Atari 2600 as my favorite "8-bit" system solely on the basis that I have the most fun with it, not because it's more powerful.

In that case, I'll have to choose NES, TG-16 coming in at a close second(I poke fun, but I actually love the system)
