Wow.

I had never ever played Popful Mail until just recently. I must say that this is definitely one of the best Sega CD games that I've ever encountered. It definitely has to rank in the TOP 10 Sega CD games of all time list. Maybe even top 5. In fact, it could even challenge for the number 1 spot if it wasn't so easy.

Graphics are absolutely breathtaking, and the sound is totally awesome.

I highly recommend this game to any Sega CD fan that hasn't had the opportunity to play it yet.

Yes, it is awesome. WD really did a great job with the translation. Any time someone harps on about the Sega CD not having any good games, I mention PM.

It's easily one of my favorite Sega CD games! Worth owning a Sega CD right there... Well, for that and Tomcat Alley (jk)!

I've had Popful Mail sitting on my hard disk for the longest time, but for some reason I never get around to spending time with it. If I play a Sega CD game, it'll likely be Sonic CD. Everyone enjoys that game a lot, so I'm sure it's good.

I love PM! Falcom has always been one of my favorite designers, so I was pretty excited whtn I was in 8th grade and I discovered PM was getting released over here! And I wasn't disappointed at all. PM is a very good reason to get a Sega CD. (It's much better than Sonic CD IMHO :) )

"I really biffed it!"

I haven't played PM for years, but I still have it. I got all the way to the end and couldn't beat the boss...

Cheers,
Ben

BTW, thanks for your help in getting my RGB setup going...I love it and it is such a huge improvement over composite...Ghouls 'n Ghosts is beautiful on it!

*cold water*

The American version's game balance is screwed and it's not fun. Obnoxious voice acting / story, too.

What a coincidence, I was just playing that as of late on Gens. Truly, the voice acting and writing are terrific, and the difficulty is mitigated by the "save anywhere" feature (and the "equip/remove amulet" manouver).

It actually reminds me a lot of Clash at Demonhead. I might even make a "The Many Faces of Popful Mail" avatar in the near future.

It's also kind of similar to Y's III...both are Falcom games, so that makes sense.

It's pretty fun, but the HORRIBLE dubbing nearly ruins it. The generic, annoying wannabe-Slayers anime doesn't help either...

It's part of the charm, says I. I even go back and see how the dialogs change with the different characters. Granted, it doesn't have the bizarre gurus, egg-laying aliens, and imminent nuclear explosions of Clash at Demonhead, but it's still a cut above a lot of other forgettable 2D platformers.

Oh my goodness!!!!

That game in RGB is like a freaking religious experience. Totally amazing. In fact, I was going to title the topic, "Popful Mail in RGB is freaking incredible".

But I figured I would be getting redundant about talking how every game is so beautiful in RGB. They all look damn good in RGB.

But there really isn't any question about it, Popful Mail simply destroys everything when you see it in RGB and hear it through some good headphones or a good stereo system.

Absolutely gorgeous.

So according to GameFAQs, to get the best ending you need to finish in less than five hours. I'm up to about 5.75 hours at this point and I'm still quite a ways from the end... Even if I skipped the two places where I loitered to fill up my gold supply, it still sounds like 5 hours would be a difficult feat. What say you?

(Mind you, there's still no support for emulator savestates for SegaCD games in Gens, so I've accomplished this within the limits of the game's engine. I imagine the load times would get danged annoying on a real SegaCD, though.)

It's got some pretty funny scenes in it. That and the Lunar games are, to me, what set the stage fot the FMV FFVII etc games that became huge.

Finished at last! I have to say, it feels like the developers got kind of lazy towards the end; the fights and cutscenes leading up to the final boss are pretty dull compared to some of the stuff earlier in the game. Perhaps I shall upload my final save to Zophar's. (I wonder how difficult it is to hack the saveram files to reduce the total time?)

So what else did Falcom do back in the day? Can someone recommend a quality English fansite?

That is a very nice site indeed. I see Falcom also did Dragon Slayer / Legacy of the Wizard. A pity Ys 1 & 2 Eternal are so expensive at Himeya.

Is the information in the Ys article there still current? Is the remake of Ys III/IV/V still in the works?
