I'm curious to know how your significant others handle your collecting obsessions?
Mine is a gamer at heart, but she says that she gets too wrapped up in them and neglects other resposibilities, so she doesn't play very often. The upside is that she doesn't mind all of the game stuff being around so long as it is fairly neat and orderly. My ex-wife wasn't so understanding and that may be one small part of why she is an ex. ;) LOL However she played a mean game of Tetris Battle Gaiden on SNES.
So I ask that you share your trials and conquests as it relates to collecting or playing games with your partner.

my wife is fine with it as long as i dont leave messes laying around, she loves playing games , not as much as me but she is really big on older stuff from the 16-bit days, she goes with me on all of my hunts, and we go to a few anime conventions every year and usually pick up some cool imports ^_^

My wonderful wife is very supportive of my hobby. A few caveats include, no messes (except in my Room 'O Doom {errr Offiice :D }), not spending too much on "crap" (errr historical artifacts :D ); and not filling up the house with full size arcade games :whip: However, she does let me fill up my "half" of the garage with them 8-) . In all, she is the best a guy could ask for and I love her dearly. :rocker:
Now if I can just get her to agree to that 3-some I've been asking about for the last 13 years.... :snuggle:

Let me put it into perspective.
My wife of 12 years pretty much knew what she was getting herself into. In fact, we bought our house a few months before we got married and there was a clear pre-requisite that this house have a finished basement for gaming, including a decent-sized area for the collection (aka the original "Room of Doom").
I have since taken over two other bedrooms in the house. Sometimes guests sleep there. usually they're just piled up wth gamestuff. We keep the doors closed so casual guests would never really know.
You can imagine the tolerance over the years.. She plays a little, usually buys me games for Christmas, but has no real interest in the collecting aspect of the hobby. And yet, she's never complained about it, nor has she argued about the fact that I've taken "vacations" without her every year to manage Classic Gaming Expo.
This Saturday I'll have 30 gamers in the house. I don't expect she'll stick around, but she's been more than supportive, reminding me of llittle things I need to do this week to get the house prepped.
She's incredible. If anything, I really need to take better care of HER.

I've had mixed results.
The last ex (1.5 years) never touched a game and thought that game playing was for children. I tried to encourage interest, but no luck. I did get some Super Nintendo games once, though. It was the thought that counted.
The ex before that (5 years) liked Tetris and Black Fire on the Saturn (bizarre choice) but wouldn't touch anything else. I did get a N64 Star Wars Racer pack for Christmas, though.
The current flame actually likes to play games... I'm truly pleased with this. We've had some great times with Soul Calibur and Virtual Tennis, and Unreal/Quake deathmatches have been getting pretty intense lately.
Sharing the hobby with someone who's enthusiastic is definately better than being with someone who rolls their eyes when you mention you want to run into the Gamestop when you're at the mall!
Cheers :D

Wow. You sound like you just described my wife :)
She knew what she was getting into also before we got married. Heck, she offered to store two pins and an arcade machine at her apartment's storage center before we got married. Even though she gets annoyed with things I've done for the hobby, she does what she can to support it. She spent hours upon hours at the Midwest Gaming Classic this year doing everything she could to help.
When we started looking at houses to move into, we saw one that had two garages and a big basement. When we saw the attached garage, she said, "You could put all those arcade games here." When we walked into the basement, she turned around and said to me "GOAT Store?"
When our DVD player was dieing and I suggested an Xbox, she told me that would be great.
She thinks I'm crazy sometimes because I spend so much time doing stuff with the games but rarely playing -- I probably actually game for about two to four hours a week, if I'm lucky. I'm more apt to working on the GOAT Store or chatting about it for hours instead.
And Joe... that last line that I quoted above... Ditto.

Man....care for a wife swap?..LOL...Just kidding. I wish my wife was supportive of my collecting habbits, but alas I have had to sneak in a couple of games under her Radar now and again. Mind you, she likes gaming and can play a mean game of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 or Mortal Kombat, but when it comes to my attention, it needs to be 100% focused on her, unless she is at the salon or shopping...

Well, I'm more of a games player than collector BUT obviously it does force me to collect various systems etc. I have no complaints, together for 3 years and as of this Oct 27th married 1 year. She is cool, she totally understands my "needs". Though she herself doesn't go beyond the odd puzzle or card game she understands my interest in various games and systems, she pretty much says "That's nice if it makes you happy" which may not sound that supportive but it at least means I can do what I want gaming wise and not get any grief about it! :D

So are we going to find some previous guests in between the game stuff this weekend? LOL

My girlfriend is incredibly supportive. We moved into a new apartment so that I could finally set up my game room. Also, as I buy too many games, she usually has to pay the rent then get paid back over the course of the month. She's great and I wouldn't trade her for anything. Except maybe Air Raid. j/k

My girlfriend of more than 8 years is very supportive. I don't live with her yet (working on that), but when we do get a house, she already knows the basement is MINE. She can have the rest. She goes with me on hunts, and even helps me sort through shit she knows I already have. She's helped me clean my games (stickers and marker and such) when I bring home large batches, and she'll even play them once in a while.

My girlfriend is entirely indifferent on all levels! She is the most caring and loving person I've ever met but she truly does not give one iota about me and my games! The good thing about this is she totally understands my obsession and would never bother me about spending a fortune on 'my nonsense'. She pretends to show interest now and again for my benefit but it's so obvious she doesn't give a shit - bless! :lovin:

I have yet to find one...but all my life I have had nothing but hatred towards games when it comes to meeting women..I've met some who will go out of their way just to destory a system, had one friend cry about his PS2 being thrown out the window because his girlfriend hated games to death. I told him, "Dude, just because she had problems with her ex and his love of games, doesn't mean she has to attack you too"
I've seen some real pyschotic women lately...or I must be hanging around the wrong areas :/
Kinda makes me happy that I'm single, because I still cannot cope with so much hatred with games from women like that

Or maybe it got tossed out because he was spending more time with it than with her. ;)
I'm going to remain single for the rest of my life so I have absolutely no worries whatsoever. :D

mine pretends to not be supportive, and rolls her eyes whenever i tear into a new priority mail box sitting on the table and then run gleefully to the living room with a shiny new MVS cart, but then again she had a very LARGE NES collection even before we were together, and just finished her NES corner in the living room, soooo... 8-)
when my consolized MVS arrived, i got the :hmm:  face, but she seemed to really enjoy beating my ass in bust-a-move the other day, 30 matches to 24. ;)

Actually he was working too much according to her story lol, he works for a nursing home, and it was back in June when this happened, I just came by to hang out with his brother, and it was around 8pm, he just got home, and walked into his room and screamed "WTF"...we both ran in...all you saw was two cords...and a PS2 outside lol

My wife accepts the hobby. It's escalated since we got together, but occasionally she'll find a game here and there that she likes (Animal Crossing, Dr. Mario 64, Shadow Hearts, etc) and so it's ok :) She complains about the cost but she knows I love it....I think I need to spoil her more too!

Being a girl it's probably a lot easier for me to find someone who's into gaming, I even met Paul while working at GameStop.
He started out as a Halo playing XboX fan, but I've slowly converted him over the course of two years. Now he couldn't care less about Halo 2 as much as Morrowind 2.
I'll get a game- say animal crossing. Sit down pop it in, turn it on and out comes his catch phrase: "That looks stupid." Hour later he's stolen the controller from me. :P
And it's a plus being able to assimulate his games into my collection. "Look sweety Fable." Yoink.

My wife supports and encourages my hobby, but I'm not she really understands it. She sees a lot of the old things I buy as junk and doesn't understand my desire to shop in Thrift Stores when we can afford regular stores. I always tell her that when regular stores start carrying old game cartridges, I'll be the first one in line.
And don't forget, it was my wife who totally redecorated our workshop and turned it into an arcade for me. There is always something to be said about the wife of a guy who owns 25 arcade cabinets ...

My soon to be ex wife hated my games and anything else I collected because it was "stupid and childish" :eek 2: x_x :hmm:
She would just call its corey's junk when she would talk about it.
She also cant seem to get the fact that it takes $ to make $ .
Meaning when I tell her I just got X game for $1 and I can get $50 for it she would just roll her eyes and be pissed because I even spent a dollar.
I would love to find a girl that likes games and thriftin ,but there just aint any around here that are SINGLE . :P
I did hook up with one a few months back and she was great she loved games and she would rather go to goodwill than going to any other store.
But that didnt work for reasons that piss me off greatly :hmm:  :/
MY gamer woman will come to me one day. ;)
I'm fairly lucky as well. I ran a gaming franchise for a few years.......games brought income and income is good in my wife's eyes.
My wife has never really said "no" to any gaming purchases. I would guess that her outlook on it all is that I'm not out every night pissing money away on other women and booze. She'd rather have me be at home in my gaming room with a controller in hand. Lesser of two evils.
I also am a cyclist. I now help run a bike shop. I currently own 7 bikes......4 of which are in excess of $2,000 each. (I used to own 19). She has no problem with that either.
HER gaming tastes run narrow. Wheel Of Fortune and Game Of Life (both PSX) on my PS2......Monopoly and Caesar's Palace on the Genny.
It's balance. I spend on gaming and she has free rein on money spent on decorating our home. I game while our 3 yr-old watches and she spends her evening doing what she enjoys....reading. It works.

My last girlfriend used to play gamecube, ps2, and some xbox. She was really into rpg's and puzzle games and was pretty solid at SSBM. The girl before that was into Warcraft and that's about it. The one before that was into SNES (mostly Mario All Stars and the like). Luckily I rejected her pleas to borrow my system, because she dumped me the following week. Would have missed my SNES way too much.
Currently don't have a signifigant other, because all I do is play games. It's a lot easier this way, to be sure.

My wife and I are both collectors at heart, so she supports my hobbies (basically just music and gaming), and I support hers. She bought me a SNES for a wedding present! Also, I saw a Turbo Grafx set at a local flea market and told her that I was going to pick it up next time I went. She went and got it, told the seller to tell me that some dude had bought it, and gave it to me for Christmas. And best of all, I went to visit my parents in Arizona, and when I came back, she had converted our dining room into my Room of Doom (which has sinced moved and is under construction). My wife, I think I'll keep her! (I've always wanted to say that.)
