View Full Version : Wanted features in a game collection database program?

Yes. I'am going to attempt to make a Game Database Recordkeeping like program. I can't promise it'll LOOK Ultra Flashy (Unless someone who has the real artistic talent wants to do the User Interfaces. :P ). I do have the means to have this program made however. So don't go off telling me how much work it's gonna be and what not..blah-blah-blah, I know that already.

But what'd I'd LIKE to know is what features you want added...and support for what systems in general?

Lemme know so I can begin drafting an outline. :).

~Rocky

[ EDIT: OKAY AS OF RIGHT NOW, the following is drawn out. keep em coming guys.]

Features Wanted That are possible:

#1.) Pictures/Picture able to be attached to Each Entry.

#2.) Not just Game support, but Accessory / Misc. Support, such as

Controllers, Manuals... Tags that state if you beaten it.. it works or is

non/working, willing to trade? Etc.

#3.) Icons for each section.

#4.) Scales for Condition, on a 1 to 10 scale.. 1 being poor.. 10 being New

in Box/mint

#5.) Number of copies had / Tradelist

#6.) Rarity Field

#7.) Value Total of your collection overall.

Features Wanted that *Might* be possible, even if after first version

released to public:

#1.) Conversion to HTML Format.

Features that *probably* won't make it:

#1.) Conversion to Excel Format , another programs format.

You should be able to add info about if you have the manual or the box and such. Maybe even more, due to the fact that you can have a strategy guide, map, soundtrack and so forth.

Also, maybe be able to include if you've beaten the game, or if it's something you're willing to trade or sell?

Take a look at DVD profiler. I'll pay big for an application like that for video games.

EDIT: It looks like Game Collector has come some way since the last time I looked at it. Have to give it some additional testing, but I'd still like more scans and more details before I'd think about buying software I could pretty easily make on my own.

Good afternoon,

I have been using cart commander as of late to keep track of my collection. Not very robust, but it does have some good features. Something i would like to see is a section to save a pic of the game in the database entry, like a pic of the cart or the cover art.

I don't know if you are familiar with dvd profiler, but I like the way you can view your dvd cover in each entry.

Take Care!

Go to collectorz.com and download the trial of their game collector. Make it like that and add hardware/accessory support and you've got a winner-especially if it's free or cheap. ;)

You should cover everything in the DP Guides and the current gen of systems too. Don't leave anything out at all.

Either include icons for all systems at the beggining of the listing or let the user make their own ones :D I could help you out in that area graphics-wise if needed ^^

Great idea.. im jsut currently using Microsoft Access and a load of tables to catologe my stuff...

my ideas are...

Functions like

Area to add Game Name, Version (if possible), Release Year, Company, Notes about this game, also extras would be nice such as How much i paid for this game & its rarity!

Tick boxes for
Box
Manual
Cart
Inserts

Scales out of 10 for
Condition of Box, Manual, Cart & Inserts

The ability to add a image (of a box scan) to the data

A duplicate/trade list generator... (finds your duplicates by searching thru your database

A function to export database to excel/word (as i use a pocket pc when im out on finds and need to check what i have and dont have)

also export to html pages would be nice, therefore we can show off our collections in separate html pages divided into sections such as consoles/company/rarity

Nice little extras would be small icons for each system, which you can click on to change the system you are databsing for...

and what would be the ULTIMATE feature, is if you had a value-adder-upper, where it adds up all the values giving yopu a all together value of your collection!

and to add to that last point, do the same for the filed "How much i paid for this" adding up how much you spent, giving you the ability to see wether u are spendin more than they are worth or if you have a good investment!

hope this helps!

also i aint to bad at photoshop if you want some logos doing?

Yes..I would need Icons for just about every system in the DP guide then. If you can help out with that. That'd be great.

As for the Price? This program will also be Freeware. I don't intend to charge money for it.

#1.) Conversion to Excel Format , another programs format.

What you might try is allowing users to export into a tab delimited text file. A delimited text file can be imported into Excel, and should be easy to code.

I also like fields where I can track the value of games, and what I paid for them.

Perhaps you can include consoles aswell? (like you are willing to do games and accessory), like you have 2 versions of the saturn etc.

Here's the first set of icons, I hope more will follow soon (I will export them as .ico when all of them are finished) ^^ It might be that I didn't get the original system logo for some of them, if so, I'd be glad if somebody could supply me with just that :)

If this were my application I'd make it all web based...

Upload a CSV file that matches the required fields and it would auto update your list.

Images could be stored online and pulled from the server as needed. Add in user ratings/reviews and FAQs

Export to HTML, XML(GameXML "RSS" type feed?) or Excel would be a breeze.

Using the user's supplied data we could start an average price/cost system that would auto update everyone's Collection value. This could also be used to determine Replacement Value (typically what an insurance company would use), Average Cost (by Country, City, State, Zip, Province, etc.) and Equivilent trade values across systems( 10 pac-man 2600 = 1 mary-kate and ashley GBA).

It could also start to really track how many copies of games are out there, creating a self updating rarity guide (again by Country, City, State, Zip, Province, etc.).

When you dream... Dream big...

The really sad thing is....

I could do this if only I had more time...

So yeah, sounds neat. Im not sure if it was mentioned, but it should have support for individual entry of prices, not just a total. Also, price and date of original purchase would be very nice, since I keep records of that myself already. Also, if it could automatically look up DP prices and rarities, and scan your collection for most rare/valuable, that would be nice.

Oh yeah, it was mentioned before, but support for actual systems is a necessity.
