View Full Version : Manci Games reviews "Video Game Collector - #2"

I didn't know that's how they did things. Mavelous! :D
RCM, as for your comments you have now made more than 6 comments in the last 20 or so comments. Before you came about, the conversation was full of what I thought was a lot of good constructive criticism and (if people chose to) they could gain a lot from the comments. Why don't you let the moderators be the moderators and if they feel the need to close this, they can... but to this point, it has remained unlocked as all of these suggestions (yes, even Jaysen's) could be taken and used by VGC or any other possible future magazine.
Just letting my opinion be known goat. I am not trying to carry this thing on. I stated my opinions. I was late in reading the thread so i responded late and to the orginal post. I also admitted I was late previously by the way. If you and everyone else wants it dropped that's fine by me. I made my point agree with it or not. If people are pissed about my comments and want them to stop stop bringing them back up. Simple as that.

I say it again: there were no insults whatsoever in the original review.
I say it again, Klaus: Jaysen's "review" is 1,500 words of insults. Not all of the jabs might be immediately obvious without some background on Jaysen's many conflicts with me and VGC, but they're all there.
Jaysen rejected everyone's advice (including my own, based on 15 years of game-journo experience) in creating his zine, and failed about as completely as one can fail. Now he has the temerity to "review" Video Game Collector and expect me to pay attention to his biased opinions, despite the fact that he's been nothing but an enormous asshole in his interactions with me. It's hypocritical, it's pathetic, and it's absurd.

First off, if you don't want things to carry on, STOP POSTING.
Second of all, I sign my real name to my posts. The least you can have is the common decency to use that instead of referring to me as "goat" which was obviously a childish attempt at poking fun of me. I wish that you would grow up. Please, let the good conversation continue and DON'T REPLY.

Well, the only Q is then: did he do it or is he a paper tiger? ;) ...and if you two bought boxing gloves, then you get the economy running. You see, there is always something positive to report. :)
Read Lenny's post again: I expected him to punch ME, not vice versa. Not a long story as to why, but not a good anecdote, either.

[There is no price guide for either magazine, even though pinball and arcade machines are probably a hobby that could better use one.
A few years ago Gameroom's editor and publisher Tim Ferrante did co-write an arcade price guide that's now out of print. And Dave Ellis' 'Official' guide also has arcade prices.

Zach, if some of what Jaysen's review is factually correct (in that there are numerous typos, spelling mistakes, grammar problems etc) then you should pay attention to that and remedy it. Regardless of what you might think of the guy. Bad word flow on the page is one of the major things I dislike about gaming publications in general, and sadly all too many of them don't proof read enough.
Now I'm not going to say whether that is true or not about VGC. I haven't got issue #2, and whilst I have issue #1 (courtesy of Joe) I have had enough time to flick through it. But something to look into.

Ha ha ha. Let's set the record straight. I wasn't trying to insult you Dan. Your identity on the board is GoatDan though. Are you trying to insult yourself? I have nothing against you so don't take this remark or the previous remark personal. Furthermore, I will reply to anything I feel the need to. Don't tell me what I can and can't do. If you have a problem and don't want to ruin this sinking ship of a thread anymore PM or IM me if you have such a problem.

Ahhhhh! I can't take it anymore! I've hit that "reply" button at least three times in the past few days, and then I go back. There is certainly some uuuugggllllyyyyy history behind these two and I have no details whatsoever and then I try to ignore this argument and I know this is none of my business and I just can't help myself.
Regardless of the history of these two, the original "review" is a great big fat insult parading behind the moniker of "constructive criticism." Unlike my dull post now, this review had a reason... to piss off the writer of VGC and get a reaction. I don't know the folks behind this new magazine (which I like a great deal), but I know quite a few journalists (including my beloved brother) who are opinionated and forceful; the advice from others saying "not to write back" is silly and unreasonable to a writer. You can't just sit there like a dingleberry on a dog's ass and not say something.
This is my favorite part:
I'm thankful for the review, it was very helpful, and I'm convinced it is objective. I read biased reviews in objective clothing based on personal past battles, this seems to be not one of them.
You couldn't be more wrong abut Jaysen's "objectivity," Klaus, but you'd need to know much more about the ass-ugly history between him and I to understand why his "review" is a litany of insults, and I don't care to rehash or relive that history.

Regardless of whether or not you believe the review is objective (it is), you should still at least listen to the comments lendelin is making. Makes sense. And if I had it to do over again, I would probably do it his way.
This comment is a goldmine Zach: "You throw away an incredible opportunity, you have literally thousands of games at your disposal, the possibilities of different angles are endless how these games can be covered; this is something a current mag can't possibly do, they are stuck with reviews and previews"
He's right. You guys need to think of ways of covering games that nobody has done yet. We tried something like that with our reviews, but in the end...they were still just reviews.
lendelin is really onto something here. Even if you ignore my entire original post, I would suggest at least printing out the quote noted above and pasting it to the front of your monitor. It's golden...
O_O
Oh. My. God. Will you look at that! We should copy these monumental statements and paste them into a word document and load our printers with picture-quality or at least resume’-quality paper and then print out our little masterpiece preferably in 24-bit color and cut it into a little cute cloud shape and tape it to the front of our bloody MONITORS ladies and gentlemen because it's golden, it's bloody golden.
EVERYONE, PLEASE print out this stuff and paste it on your computer and your bathroom mirror and on your own face and look at the little notes every single day and read to yourself "You throw away an incredible opportunity."
I am now going to eat an entire bag of "Sweet Sixteen" powdered mini doughnuts. You should ALWAYS dig through all the bags on the shelf at the store and find the freshest date, especially if you are at a shitty gas station.
Someone PM me and tell me what happened between these two! I have to know.
I love drama coming from smart articulate people. It makes me tingly. I'm going to have another beer and hope someone writes something with even more drama and theatrical flair.

This is an obvious personal and character attack (RCM, you reading?), so I feel the need to chime in and just say this:
I have had no real conflicts with anyone...and I mean *anyone* at VGC, except for Mr. Meston.
As far as I'm concerned, the VGC gang is a great group of people. And even though Mr. Meston seems to despise me, I feel that VGC is lucky to have him and his 15 years of experience on board. Hopefully, they'll listen to him and he can save them from the absolute, complete and utter failure that he believes the Manci Games project to be.
If Mr. Meston feels the need to continue his tirades, I sincerely hope that he follows up via Private Message.
That being said, I'll return to lurk mode...

Then refer to me as either goatdan or as Dan, either of which is correct. My name on here is goatdan because of the GOAT Store, which if you don't know about is in the link. Cutting it down to just "goat" though seems to be a rather childish way to reply. If you didn't intend it as such, I apologize.
Furthermore, I will reply to anything I feel the need to. Don't tell me what I can and can't do. If you have a problem and don't want to ruin this sinking ship of a thread anymore PM or IM me if you have such a problem.
This isn't a sinking ship of a thread and I don't feel that it ever was, unless you feel that the initial review was only made to piss someone off and then I can see the problem. I don't see how coming in here after three pages have been written full of constructive criticism and ideas and demanding that the thread be closed is contributing at all to the conversation. My reply to you that started our talk was in a long thread in which I talked about the two arcade / pin magazines I am subscribed to and why I like them.
I really do want this conversation to continue, because if nothing else I am curious to see what other people's thoughts are on this topic. Regardless of who started it or anything else, there is a lot of interesting stuff in here. Perhaps for the rest of the topic, we shouldn't focus on VGC, we should just focus on what we would like to see in a classic gaming publication. Then, someone (VGC or anyone else) could take that information and try to start a publication from it if they felt so inclined to have a gaming publication like what we've talked about, I would be willing to contribute to it myself as a writer and I would definitely become a subscriber. Because of that, I hope that a lot of good comes from this thread -- no matter what motives may have originally started it good or bad.

Okay, from the time that I hit reply to your message to right now there have been some posts that have proven me wrong. I now have to side with RCM.
The constructive criticism is over. This thread is sinking. I just hope that enough good came of some comments in here for someone out there to listen to. Until then, I'll be reading PinGame and GameRoom...

I'm here Jaysen! My problem is not the fact that you don't like Meston or personally attack him. Be my guest. My problem was starting a thread just to start a fight. You both think each other are assholes. That's great! I love conflict.

Yes, a bit of background history between the two people would be nice to know---in order to make some logical thoughts on the topic. PM me if you have anything to say.

It's really not so dramatic. A lot of words have been exchanged between us, but the gist of the whole thing is that he offered me some advice regarding MG and I chose to ignore it.
It was due to my decision not to heed Zach's advice that Manci Games completely and utterly failed about as bad as any project could fail and I was bitter and resentful for it. I hope that by me finally just coming out and saying that, we can just put this little fued to bed and get back to making constructive comments regarding the future of retro mags.
Better yet, I'm going to just start a new thread dedicated to anyone and everyone's ideas regarding retro mags. Please...I beg of all of you. Please do not bring the ugliness into that forum...
