i was watching the G4 (gaming channel) news this past week and they mentioned that nintendo was developing a next generation handheld. the device is to be based around N64 hardware and will feature at long last a backlit screen. that was pretty much all they said, anybody else hear about this?

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is working on this but Gameboy Advance is still relatively new and I don't see a new Gameboy until 2005.
BTW, is that G4 channel any good?

They are more than working on it. I've heard they're going to piss people off and release it soon (Within the next year).
Yeah, it's another channel of "maybe something is on"

Wow, I thought this thing was kind of a joke. I didn't post it here a few weeks ago because I thought the European paper that stated it got their information wrong, since I didn't see info anywhere else.
Needless to say...sweet.

3D on a 5" screen? hmmmm.
If this happens we can probably kiss the side scrolling days goodbye, and I don't wanna see that, especially on a handheld, this is sad. Who wants N64 type graphics anyway, yuck.
Keep the classics, and the basics on the handheld, and leave the 3D gaming to the big boys I say.

I have no "insider" information, but one thing I can say is that work on the Gamecube began before the Nintendo 64 had even been released. I think, however, that releasing a new handheld system would be tantamount to handheld suicide for Nintendo.

i agree with BHvrd, keep 3D away from the handhelds. the only reason i have a gba is for the 2D sidescrollers.

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo's next generation of the Game Boy won't be coming out anytime soon.
You have to remember that this is, after all, business. And there's absolutely no need to replace your top-selling product, especially when you have the handheld market all to yourself. Remember that the GBA's release was pushed back some due to high sales of Game Boy Color.
Remember also that these machines spend years in development. It's like the prozines harping on "XBox 2" or "PS 3" as though there will the console life cycle will be cut short three or four years. Remember also that American prozines are indistinguishable from toy cataloges (except that the people who put out the toy cataloges are more educated).
As far as I've been reading, though, it seems Nintendo does want to put a backlit screen on the GBA (and maybe a couple more buttons, which it always needed), but the problem continues to be (as anyone who owned a Lynx will tell you) the way backlights kill the batteries. Rest assured, when Nintendo solves the battery life issue, we'll get our damn lights. Other than that, I wouldn't worry. I'd worry more about the lack of original content; GBA is turning into the ultimate shovelware machine.

Just because the system is 'built around the N64 hardware' doesn't mean that it'll be home to only 3D games. The N64 featured mostly 3D games because that's all people ever bothered to program for it. It could do great 2D too, like Yoshi's Story.

In a way, history's repeating: After the video game crash Nintendo came out and dominated for years before Sega started becoming their chief competitor. Now Sony's posed to dominate all with some of the pie still going to Nintendo and Microsoft.
