View Full Version : Let an import console replace the domestic version?

Simple question - have you let a foreign version of a console replace the one found in your country? For myself, as far as Neo Geo and TG-16* go, I've gone with the Japanese versions only. In my view, importing is the only way to get good games and save a shred of my sanity...but that's just me.

In the case of CD-ROM games for a peripheral (Sega/Mega CD) I tend to want to collect mainly for the import version, but I'm a bit biased in thinking that Sega CD games are generally crappy :P

The Saturn is another system I'm mostly interested in getting imports only for, but I already have a domestic Saturn that may or may not be working.

As far as most everything else goes, I'm fine collecting for both versions of the system...NES or FC, Mega Drive or Genesis; region be damned, I'm here for the games.

For disc based systems, you could just simply have one modified to run all regions.

I still only have the Japanese version of the PS2. However, just recently I picked up my first 2 US released PS2 games (King's Field and Katamari Damashi). I've been borrowing my brother-in-law's PS2 to play them.

As for just about all my other imports, I'm happy using US systems to play them. I got a converter for my NES, the tabs removed from my SNES and N64, my various Game Boy handhelds, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and consolized MVS obviously have no region lockout, and that about covers it.

I've been systematically (heh) trying to make all my consoles import-game compatible, through whatever means necessary (aside from modding, as I don't like the idea of altering my consoles).

Import-enabled:

Nintendo 64 - got an NTSC-U console.
Atari Lynx - no region lock.
Game Boy Color - no region lock.
Sega Game Gear - no region lock.
Game Boy Advance - no region lock.
Super NES - Honeybee Super Magic Converter (will run Super FX games)
Sega Dreamcast - Action Replay CDX Demo
Sega Saturn - Datel Action Replay 4-in-1
Sega Mega CD - Datel Pro CDX
Sega Master System - no region lock.
SNK Neo Geo Pocket Color - no region lock.

Consoles I'd like to make 'import-ready':

Nintendo GameCube - simply gotta get my hands on a Freeloader.
Sony PlayStation 2 - seriously considering getting an NTSC-J console.
Sony PlayStation - probably get an NTSC-J console.

Consoles I'm not interested in getting imports for:
Atari 2600
NES
Sega Mega Drive
Microsoft Xbox
Sega 32X

I was always brought up on the notion of ntsc being superior to pal, so needless to say that 90% of all of my games are NTSC and a further 70% of that are Jap. (i live in a pal territory).

I also love the novelty of getting Japanese games and looking at the packaging etc, it seems that no other region puts as much effort into packaging games well as the japanese. I.e many Pal manuals are onlyin B+W while nearly all of the jap games that i have got have full colour instructions

If you get a Japanese PS2, you don't have to worry about getting a Japanese PSX. :P
