Octupus is the original main character of Parodius Da! and the same goes for the Penguin.
Im sorry, but my favorite verison of Parodius is
Gokujou Parodius for SFC due to the addition of Goemon and Kid Dracula
1 point if you can name the theme song that is played while playing Kid Dracula ;)

I figured the Octopus was an "original" character for Parodius, but the Penguin definitely dates back to the days of the MSX and Antarctic Adventure, much earlier.

Hop! Step! Above the Clouds.
Isn't that it?
Plus you got the title wrong - it's Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius ;D

No, you got the games mixed up, Jikkyou Oshaberi was the 3rd release 1995 with the voice announcer who's always insulting you during gameplay
Gokujou was the 2nd on SFC..the one I like...released 94'
while the first SFC Parodius Da! was 1992...
and for the record...the song playing during Kid Dracula is called "The Beginning" a remix of the first level theme in CastleVania 3/Akumajo Densetsu

Hah, caught! X_x LOL However, the song you're thinking of - in its Kid Dracula incarnation - is called Go! Go! At the Castle. Yes, it's a remix of Beginning, but that's what it's called.
And the point about Jikkyou still stands - the music for Kid Dracula there is the one I mentioned.

Some of the Parodius crew are original characters, like Hikaru and Akane, the bunny girls on the missles. *swoon* :embarrassed:
Most of them do come from other Konami games, but AFAIK, the octopus, Takosuke, is exclusive to the series and has not appeared in any other Konami game prior to Parodius. Pentarou, on the other hand, actually comes from an MSX title, Anarctic Adventure, and had a sequel, Penguin Adventure. He also starred in what I think to be one of the most innovative platformers that never made it outside of Japan, Yume Penguin Monogatari for the Famicom. It was only a matter of time before Pentarou became drafted in the Parodius army, and penguins would become a trademark of the entire series. Why penguins? Because it's Konami. Duh. LOL
However... about Mambo/Samba... I SWEAR that they ripped that design off from that fish from Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and I think his name was ALSO Mambo! Wish I had a photo of both so I could compare them... hmmmmm...

Parodius started as a MSX game in 87, but it performed so well Konami decided to release a arcade version in 90 (Parodius da!).
The original fighters in the MSX version are: Tako, Popolon (from Knightmare), Pentarou (from Antarctic and Penguim Adventure), Goemon and Vic Viper (from Gradius). Tako is a dream programmer. His job is to create dreams but some nasty "bugs" are destroying his work... :)
A second arcade game, Gokujou Parodius, was released in 94.

Didn't one of the Parodius games include Upa Upa, that baby that had his own Famicom Disk System game?

Upa, the adorable lil' baby, is available for play in the Super Famicom versions of both Gokujou Parodius and Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius, and his player 2 counterpart is Rupa, who I think might be the 2P version of Rupa in Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa. I could be wrong on a few pieces of info, but Upa definitely rules.
