From what I here Shenmue is the largest costing game ever made.

But does anyone know how much it was too make?
And does it still hold the record?

I don't know how much Shenmue cost to make, but I REALLY doubt it's the most expensive game ever made. I would guess that Final Fantasies or Metal Gears or other super high-profile games would be the most expensive to make. Hours of recorded dialogue, plenty of motion-capturing, and fancy prerendered CGs drive up prodution costs very fast.

The Nintendo game Super Mario Brothers has sold a total of 40.23 million copies worldwide. The 26 games featuring Mario, the character who first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1982, have sold more than 152 million copies in total since 1983. More than 40% of US households own a Nintendo game system.

I never knew guiness had such a decent website...

Hmpf. That's 1999 data.

I seriously doubt Shenmue holds up against MMORPGs - is Guiness counting them?

What's more, would you expect most developers to freely admit they hold a world record for spending the most money? The idea is to MAKE money, not spend it!

The way I heard it, is that Shenmue cost $20 million to make, and then Shenmue II cost $40 million to make.

Only 20 million that has to be wrong. I am going to try and find more updated figures. There is no way that was the most expensive to make.

Duke Nukem Forever anyone?

technically...no...

its not really a game....just a game in developement....or a bunch of code thats almost a game...

it wasnt released, so, the cost isnt determined, and if it never gets released, then it wouldnt count anyway

hmm your right. It didn't make me register when i got the page thru yahoo. Either way it is the first Matrix game.

I think some of the other old games would rank up higher than that if the price of inflation was to be considered.

Nope. Enter the Matrix took the prize, out-doing Shenmue.
So much wasted money on actors...

Doom 3 would definitely not be up there. Have you seen how big the studios of iD software is? Its about 20 people total.

Don't know about HL2 though.

Hmpf. That's 1999 data.

The data is not from 1999, the game was published in Japan in 1999.

the data is from 1999, its in my 1999 issue of the actual book!

yeah doom3 while expensive is no where near the costs of other big budget titles. ID does EVERYTHING in house with a development team of only two dozen or so.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say by that, but we've already shown that their figures are considerably lower than those for Enter the Matrix.

The game was made prior to 1999; it would seem only reasonable that the count comes from 1999 or soon after.
