View Full Version : Salvation Army vs. Goodwill

Which one has treated you better?

Personnally, I've found more at Salvation Army than I have Goodwill. Stuff like boxed INTV games for 99 cents each, Socrates, Wicco Sticks, etc.

Goodwill's around here are starting to carry *New* stuff, stuff that like Target clearneces out and no one buys so they write off their stuff to Goodwill. The best find I've ever gotten there was a NIB Cybiko Xtreme for $15

in this corner of the land the store to hit is savers, which is a for profit thrift. goodwills here have moved to being almost all clothing, i guess the hassle of dealing with electronics was just not worth it to them. the salvation army here is a rathole, staffed by old crabs, one of them even told me they throw out old video games, amzingly this is the SAME store my friend found the ewok adventure proto in...

so why do they think anybody is ever gonna buy those squeeze bottles and answering machines?

I've had pretty good luck at most of the thrifts I go to. There aren't many Goodwill's near me but the one I have hit (about an hour away) has yielded some good stuff. The Salvation Army seems to be a bit pricy ($35 buck for an SNES) but I did find one that gets games occassionally. I guess I do the best at the generic community thrifts.

In Portland, Oregon where I live they all suck. There are very few Salvation Army stores and they have almost nothing. There are at lest 10 Goodwill stores within 15 minutes of where I live. I think it is the opposite in the Northeastern U.S.. It seems that the big stores are Salvation Army and Goodwill are few and far between. A few years ago I used to get all kinds of good stuff at Goodwill stores but no they have next to nothing except common NES and Genesis carts for $5-$10 each. I'm on my way to a Goodwill in just a few minutes.

I think Scooterb23 would agree that Goodwills in southern Ohio really stink. You can find a buy at Salvation Army once in a while but not terribly often. The best ones that I have found are the Volunteers Of America chains in Columbus. I found an upright PENGO coin op in one for $75.00 not too long ago. The first Tuesday of every month they mark everything in the store 75% off.

Salvs, just because the only one I've ever been to (an hour away) had dick, and I've actually gotten some decent stuff at the local in town Salv. (Boxed NES games, 2 complete O2 board games, etc)

Between the two, I'd have to say Goodwill. They seem to have the best selection most often, but I do get games cheaper at Salvation Army. However, around here Deseret Industries is the best place to find old NES stuff. Its a Thrift run by the Latter Day Saints. I find stuff there almost every week.

It's kind of a toss-up. I've found lots of classic stuff (Atari VCS carts like Pitfall 2) from SA for $.25 a piece to Atari 5200 carts (again, Pitfall 2 comes to mind) for $.50. That's the one in the city. The one out in Plymouth sold Atari VCS carts for around $3.75 each and NES carts for $5 (nothing worth that much).

However I also found good stuff at Goodwill before they started selling stuff on the web: Atari 5200 2 port complete ($5), Colecovision complete ($5), NES deck totally complete with extra joypads, extension cord and a NES advantage ($8), DC games for $3 (Crazy Taxi, Air Force Delta).

However, BOTH places are a total bust lately. I haven't found squat at the local SA (except for the Color Computer complete system-I have that) and Goodwill hardly has any games anymore (chick that works there buys 'em up)

I shop everywhere, and the Sally Ann seems to be the best all around place. I used to swear by Value Village, but these days you're more inclined to hear me call it Not a lot of Value Village.

When they price loose Genesis sports titles at 7.99 CDN a pop, it's a little unrealistic.

Price wise, Goodwill beats Value Village around here hands down. Sadly the selection, and odds of finding something classic and desirable are a bit more likely at the Value Villages around here. The VV pricing is WHACK. They hopped up VCS carts to $3.99 (of course they are almost always dirt commons - 10 commons for $40bux? No way..ebay is cheaper..with shipping!! SMB/DH carts - $5.99 at VV, and they have a stack of 'em! Stooopid!

The flipside of the stupidity is, they simply have no idea what they have, so you can still scoop uncommons, and rare oddball controllers comparably cheap. If you want a permanently blinking NES with stickers all over it though ...$10bux! x_x Goodwill is consistently cheaper, and assorted wires from their wire bin are always 99cents. Found some great RF switches, Playstation/ Saturn/ DC power cords, Nintendo RCA -out adapters..99cents a pop! sweet!

The name says it all...while I once found 3 Game & Watches for .99 each at a Salvation Army, Goodwill is my second home and the source of many of my biggest hauls. Even if there is no game stuff (which unfortunately is happening more and more) I always seem to find something interesting. Like yesterday,GW only had a few Genny sports titles, but I did pick up a 12" room alarm Lost in Space Robot that turns flashes and says "Danger Will Robinson" for only 99 cents...how can you beat that!

I would prefer to give my money to the Salvation Army (they don't seem to overprice their stuff around here so much), but they rarely ever have anything. Goodwill is pretty much hit or miss, but is almost ALWAYS overpriced.

Since the only thrift store around here is Deseret Industries, I'd have to say that, though that's not saying much (Best I've found was Atlantis and Demon Attack for the Odyssey 2 for .50 each, though my brother found an Atari Panda Tank Brigade, but passed on it >:(, soon we check ebay and someone else had bought it and put it on ebay and made 35.00 >:( )...

When I was living up in Washington, the Value Village there had some pretty good stuff (1.00 NES games!)

The Salvation Army near me was dry since it opened about
2 years ago. They had an Intellivision and loads of games
that I missed by 1 day (as always). But lately within the last
4 week they totally sucked my wallet dry. Box's and box's of
Boxed 2600 games, Piles of C64 games, NES games (2) etc..

I talked to the guy at the counter and the last guy on the dock
was a collector aswell :o but recently moved outta town.

Now I'm negotiating a position on the dock :D

Here in Montreal, the Salvation Army stores have very little pertaining to videogames (at least the ones I've been to). However, I've heard that there has been some good finds at Value Village (which is called Village des Valeurs in Quebec). As for Goodwill, they don't have any stores here.

I am partial to RLDS as the Salvation Army always is overpriced and the Goodwill is rather devoid of any goodies.

I personally like pawn shops more than the local value village. I only shopped at Value Village once for some SMS stuff they had. I don't bother going into those stores usually because they rarely have anything I need... Plus I like to make deals with the people at the pawn shops...

Last year I would have said Goodwill easily as the Salvation Armys around me are really nasty, but recently I've been visiting my girlfriend's family in Mass. and noticed that the Salvation Armys up there are much cleaner and nicer up there than they are here in Connecticut. Plus most of the Goodwills there don't seem to bother accepting videogames. So I guess my answer would be that it depends where you live.

I love Genero-Thrift. I find all the best stuff over there, like Shooter, Platformer, and Fighter, all for that system everyone loves the most, Game Console. Then when I'm done, I head to Fast Food Restaurant and buy a Beef Hamburger with an order of French Cut Fried Potatoes, and a Carbonated Soda to wash it all down.

I've got to say that the two stores are much different once you cross the state line. Here in Connecticut The Goodwills are all pretty decent while the Salvation Armys are really nasty. Yet once I cross the border into Mass it seems to be the opposite. I voted for Goodwill though since I visit them more often.

I personally have had better luck at independent thrift stores. There are too many people on ebay now and the big name thrifts like Salvation Army and Goodwill have dried up on just about everything, not only games. The only way to get anything is to be there right when the stuff comes in. The employees get to everything(or save stuff for someone else) before it even gets out . I would probably do it too if I had to work in that stinky place for minimum. You all know the smell I am talking about.
Personally, garage sales have been way better for me.

Been to the local goodwill at least 7 times... so far the best thing I've found was a smb/duck hunt cart... (course I didn't buy it!)

Salvation Army, well I can never find it... but I know where it is now so I'll have to check up on that.

I find much better stuff in random assed thrifts. I went into one for disabled vets once and found 8 boxed nes games such as legacy of the wizard, dragon warrior II, final fantasy ect. and some were complete for 1.99 each. I also like saver's better than goodwill...I have just gotten SO MUCH SHIT from that place. Goodwill hasn't really done much for me.

Holy Crap @ SMS Games, and the rest! I never do that well.

The only time I've been looking for games in an indy-thrift I found...a bare (no cords) C64. Bleh! It's in town, so I can always go back. It's the Tiger Room, in Battle Creek; part of a Catholic church/school.

I've found a few good things at Salvation Army thrifts; there was my Hawaii find (only SMS game in the wild ever, and it came with the hangar tab! :D), and a more recent find of a few PC games and a nice boxed Radio Shack Bridge Companion portable.

Everything else was at Goodwill. EVERYTHING. Really the only thrift I can go to.

Definitley Goodwill. I worked at a Goodwill for a little while, and let me tell you, they had good stuff coming in all the time...and they sold it all for dirt cheap! Sega Nomad for $5, Top Loading NES for $4, Boxed SNES with 20 games for $15, Sega Genesis with Sega CD add on for $10. You'd think that I'd be able to score all this stuff pretty easily since I worked there....wrong. Employees at Goodwill weren't allowed to buy anything unless it had been on the shelf for at least 2 days. All the items had tags which showed what date they had been put out. So I missed out on lots of great stuff. Although, as I've mentioned before, I did manage to score the Sega Nomad.

And yeah, I thought up the idea of having friends come to the store and buy the stuff for me. But it never worked because either the item would be gone by the time my friend got there, or all my friends would either be working or to busy to come to the store.

Salvation Army was always great for me as they always seemed to have a giant tub full of NES games that were almost always added to every week for $1.50 each. The only two games I've ever found at GoodWill were a copy of Super Sprint for the NES sealed for $2.99, and a complete Super Bust a Move 2 (PS) for $1...I know for a fact that almost every game that comes into the store are taken by employees before they hit the shelf. That rule of employees having to wait for the item to be out on shelves for two days before they can buy it is a great one...I honestly wish it was used around here.

Salvation army and Goodwill suck pretty bad in Canada for games (or, at least in Ottawa they do). I've never found anything at a Salvation Army, but I've found a few loose Genesis games at a Goodwill once.
Pawn shops and Value Villages seem to be much better here.

I don't have either near me, but I have visted Goodwills quite a bit when Im in another city... they don't have much but when they do its not too bad, maybe 2 bucks for a game or so.

I've had tons of luck with a place here called Christian Love Ministries, just a local thrift store. Gotten ALOT of stuff from there, and the lady always charges me about a dollar a piece for everything I get since I was going in there like every day.

I live in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, and over in Gahanna, there is a Goodwill. I have gotten some cool stuff there, like a Mac Classic ($15), Donkey Kong Country (2.99), Power Rangers: The Fighting edition(2.99), 2 grey Zappers (already had an orange one), a PC joystick(1.99), Dreamcast Web Browser 2.0 CD (1.99, but I don't even have a Dreamcast), and the SegaCD game Sol-Feace (.99, but I don't have a SegaCD). Overall, a good place to go to!

In Chicago, you can't do better than Unique Thrift. You never know what you'll find in there: complete Arcadia 2001 games, a Genesis core system (complete with system, hookup supplies, manual, and one controller) for $20, loose Atari or Intellivision cartridges, a stack of NES cartridges for $3 each, complete Genesis games for $6 each, a loose PlayStation 1 for $25, and DOZENS of CD-ROMs for $2.50 each.

Here in Denver I've had some luck finding things in thrift stores:

Mile Hi Thrift (Independent, Good):
Atari 2600 'Vader' with Wico Controller, Sega Game Gear with Power Supply, SegaCD Model 2 with Sega Genesis Model 1, NES Advantage, and a mix of Sega and Atari controllers.

Savers (Moderate): NES controllers, SNES Model 2, Atari, NES and Game Gear carts.

Goodwill (Moderate): NES Model 1 'Toaster', NES carts, Atari 2600 'Woody' with Imagic Video Storage Center, power supply and twelve games (my best find!)

Arc (Low): Wico Controller

Salvation Army (Low): None

Like a lot of places, there's been a serious influx of Sega Genesis units and three-button controllers. Otherwise, I tend to see game units every couple of months.

My vote would go to Salvation Army... They always have better prices... Around here both Salvation Army and Goodwill are pretty hit or miss.. But I find my best deals when I find games and systems at Salvation Army.. There are only 2 in town and I get lots more from 2 stores then I do from the 15+ Goodwills around here.. So Salvation Army all the way... Goodwill charges too much anyways.

Dragging this topic up from the depths...

I'm amazed to hear about anyone finding stuff at Salvation Army. I'm at the point where I almost never go into one. When I do, and I find something, it's usually not anything really great. I've found loads of stuff at various Goodwill stores, though. Heaps of Memorex VIS titles, a bunch of various Sega CD games (found Shining Force CD there for $5!), and rarely some decent Atari and Intellivision games.

As far as national chains go, Goodwill gets my vote every time. But I'm really attracted to little local thrifts. Those little hole-in-the-wall thrifts that you don't find much in until that one time where you'll find something amazing. I bought a $5 Vectrex that way, a boxed Virtual Boy (with Waterworld inside) for $7, an Atari Video Music for $5, and so on. Most of those kinds of thrifts are run by little old ladies who don't know a dang thing about technology or video games, so they price cartridges by size. An Intellivision cart will cost less than an Atari 5200 cartridge, a PS1 jewel case game will cost less than a long box PS1/3DO/Saturn/Sega CD game, etc. Those local thrifts can get you some great finds, even in this day and age of eBay resellers scouring thrifts just to make a buck.

I agree with you about the little local thrifts. I always score excellent deals there (Complete Genesis games for 50 cents each, a free NES with tons of games), and I always choose those before big chain stores. If big chains are the only choice, its always Salvation Army. In the area I live in, the Salvation Armies have way more stuff at way more resonable prices. The Goodwills are outragous and often sell stuff for way more than getting it new.

I can never find anything at the Salvation Army. Goodwill on the other hand Has some stuff here and there, but they are ususally too high in price. They wanted 15.00 each for Jungle Strike and Hole In One Golf the other day, both loose for the SNES. Also found a PS1 for 35.00 with no controllers and no cords.

I don't see near as many Salvation Armies here as I do Goodwill. But the one or 2 SAs I've been in in the last few years haven't had anything.

The Goodwill's around here are horrible, as it seems 95% of the stores floor space is devoted to clothes. In the nearly 2 years since I've moved here, and of the countless times I've been to multiple Goodwill's all I've found have been three worthless CD-i games- that's it. I've really stopped going in them for the most part around here. The Goodwill's in Florida were a bit better though, and I could find stuff there from time to time- nothing great but at least something. Goodwill's auction site probably has the most to do with the lack of video game stuff they have on the floor.

I vote for Genero-Thrift or Value Village. I've found quite a bunch of good stuff there this year. You find the occasionally overpriced stuff there sure, but then you'll get excellent deals on a regular basis too. Value Village seems to be more like thrift stores of 8+ years ago. At least the few near where I live.

Most of my Genesis collection and a fair bit of NES came from goodwill. I go at least once a week and usually I find nothing but when I do they always seem to have a lot.

I occasionally go to Salvation Army and they usually have absolutely nothing I'm intersted in. But when they do it's usually a heck of a deal. Last itme I went I found a very good condition CIB copy of NES Batman for 99 cents. Then I went to goodwill and got a few loose games for $4 each....passing on most becasue they weren't even worth a dollar.

I know at the goodwill that I go to, all items have to be on the floor for so many days before employees can buy it. I know because I've bought several things that they said they had their eyes on.

I used to work with a guy who's now the assistant manager of a Goodwill near my brother's house, and he told me that employees will be terminated for hiding things in the back room to buy later. They (at that store, at least) aren't allowed to set anything aside, it has to be picked over by the customers first.

For some reason, Goodwill stores out of town always seem to be better than the ones in my area. I'll find all sorts of interesting things in other cities, but around my neck of the woods, very little. Any time I go out of town, I use Google Maps to plot out thrifts to hit, and Goodwills always get a visit. Salvation Army, almost never.

It's been hit and miss depending on the place, so I'll go over them starting with the ones I've had the best luck with:

1: Goodwill
I've had my best finds here (Most recently, Golden Axe 2 (Sega Genesis) for only $3), though there have plenty of overpriced things along the way (Probably the worst offender was $100 for a Super Mario 64 camera. Thankfully, those days are over, as they now have much better pricing). In my home town, Goodwill is always my first stop if I'm wanting to go to a thrift store.

2: No-name resale shops
I've had about average luck at these. Probably my best finds came from a hole-in-the-wall "junk shop" (I referred to it as such because it was always disorganized and dirty in there), where I scooped up plenty of games and even an Atari 2600 Jr. for next to nothing. The other one I liked was a much cleaner and better organized thrift store, where I've scooped up plenty of old video game magazines and guides dirt cheap with the occasional game or 2 popping up.

3: Salvation Army
I haven't been in one in over 10 years; the local store shut down in the mid '90s, and I have no idea of the last one I went into (circa 1998) is still open or not.

My local Goodwill has a TON of games, unfortunately, an old PC game is just about as vintage as they get. But i'm keeping my hopes up, and going in everyday. I don't have a local SA. We have 3 local thrift shops though, hoping to score at one of those, unfortunately 2 of them are dirty...and very unorganized :(

Always Goodwill over Salvation Army. I periodically find good stuff at Goodwill, but never at Salvation Army. Also, the SA's tend to be in really bad areas of town, but Goodwill can be found all over.

I've had more luck at local thrifts. When I was first starting collecting I loved St. Vincent de Paul stores. The local one closed down, and I'm not sure if they are still around, but I would regularly find boxes with systems and games combined for $5. Got an intellivision and virtual boy with tons of games for a total of $10!

I haven't found anything at any second hand stores at all so I didn't vote. Damn my luck!

I'm beginning to hate Goodwill stores. One I usually stop by has VERY little of interest. Another I checked out yesterday was even worse. I don't consider an untested Atari 2600 with no AC adaptor to be worth $30. Oh, and a stuffed Alf doll for $40. Yes, that's going to sell fast.

I think they just make up prices at random for these things.

No Salvation Army stores in my area that I can find. A few St. VdeP in Cincy but in the bad parts of town. But fi they're going to vcharge high-end prices anyway, I don't see the point.

The only Salvation Army I've been to was full of fail. I've been twice and they didn't have a single video game....not even one crappy sports title. But Goodwill has been very good to me. I just picked up some stuff from their yesterday that I'll flip for a nice profit. But for my own collection I have gotten plenty of good deals at Goodwill, including a nice leather jacket.

Best deal I ever got at a thrift was $8 for a 3DO FZ-1. Worked great. That was at Value Village. And I usually only really have any luck at VV besides the odd strategy guide or something that pops up at Goodwill (the SA around here is called "the bins" b/c they have huge bins full of crap that people dig thru, to give you an idea, but I did once get a handful of super common Saturn titles still factory sealed, we're talking like the three-in-one pack-in game and stuff like that). Since Goodwill has gone to selling on Amazon and Ebay and VV has started using Ebay to price stuff, good deals AND anything worth buying have been few and far between. I also hate the stickering that stuff from VV gets. I keep telling the people that work there that if you slap a price sticker on a cart you've ruined it, but no one will listen to me.

There used to be a SalvAm by me, but the only video game item I can remember finding in there was a PS2 T-shirt for like 3 bucks. There's a Goodwill around somewhere nearby, but I haven't been in ages.

I hit up a fairly large outdoor fleamarket this past weekend, but most of the video games I saw were PS2 and newer. There was just one guy had a couple Genesis carts in boxes, grabbed X-Men for 5 bucks. :)

[unrelated, my gf bought one of her friends an Obama 'CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN' change purse for like a dollar...I was just really amused to see him in this box of mostly kiddie change purses, you know, Spongebob, Dora, Hannah Montana...Obama?! WTF]

Given the choise between Goodwill and the Salvation Army i'd chose Goodwill in a heart beat.

I,ve never saw anything of interest in my local Salavation Army store when it was open. The only time i saw anything in there video game related was when they got a copy of Super Mario bros./Duck Hunt and they priced that at $5 obviously I left that there.

When it comes to video games Goodwill is a mixed bag. their is never any games in the stuff people donate to the store but i've got some amazing deals in the surplus they get from Target including a DSi back in April for $6. :-D The rest of the store is ok i find vhs tapes and music cd's on a semi regular basis.

But the best are local thrift shops you never know what they'll have but they almost always have something interesting to look at.

If I have to choose between the two, I would go for Goodwill, but they vary. The one closest to me is kinda crappy, usually doesn't have stuff, but one slightly farther away has good stuff usually. The Salvation Army around my area 95% of the time has nothing of value for me.

GoodWill.

There's only one Salvation Army in the city. The one time I went in there, I found the box to Star Ocean PS1 but someone had stolen the discs, and they were throwing out a stack of Robot Chicken Season 2 that were probaby from Target or something because they are a store with christian values according to the manager... I might go back and check again sometime but its a half hour away when goodwill is down the street.
