I'm currently compiling a cross-referenced encyclopedia of sorts to the video game universe. Note that this will not be a system-by-system guide like the DP books, but rather a more historical endeavor chronicling the changes and evolution of your favorite games over time.
For instance, one can study the Fatal Fury series from the beginning, up through the Real Bout versions, and on to the more current Mark of the Wolves and later titles. All variants on any system (Genesis, Neo-Geo, NGPC, SNES, PSX, etc.) are listed with approximate date of release and who the publishers/developers were. (It's not comprehensive enough yet to include too many details, such as which characters appear in what game, but it shall be eventually.)
It will also be helpful in keeping tabs on otherwise unnoticed additions to certain series -- for instance, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (which was technically an entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog pantheon, but was also a minor variation on the Puyo puzzle line). It also should help in tracking the legacy of various sports games through different consoles and titles, such as the ubiquitous EA Sports or Sega Sports ranges.
I'm also making sure to include arcade variants whenever possible (sure makes it easier to keep track of the Street Fighter series), and I'll eventually have to get PC games in there as well for continuity.
This is a large undertaking, of course, but I'm a tenacious person when it comes to things I care about -- video games being one of them. I'll let you know more as the project develops.
