Which game do you think has the hardest first level? I am only talking about the very first level. Games that let you select which level to starts on as in the Megaman games do not count.

Viewtiful Joe- Bruce the Shark's stage...I hated that level..and I hate that damn boss

Again I say:

Dragon's Lair - NES

It took me forever just to get past the first screen, much less anything else.

I remember having problems in the beginning of Illusion of Gaia- SNES. I think it was the first level boss that was the hardest part of the game, but then again it's been 10 yrs or so since I last played it.

When I first played Illusion of Gaia like 8 year ago I remember having a hard time with the first boss. Back then apparently I didnt belive in the Herbs or something I dont know. But I can beat the game now no problem

level one of Mystery of comvoy for the famicom was a pain in my ass.

I think thats the ONLY Transformers cart game ever.

Almost every Gradius game (I still haven't played III), and Space Ace/Dragon's Lair (SNES/NES). Man did space Ace piss me off. Seeing that puny dexter get zapped by the laser 5908349068 times in a row is irritating.

Target Earth for the Genesis...though I heard the sequel on the Saturn is even harder.

Kid Icarus... It took me forever to pass the first area, but after that the game bot much better. It was those damn platforms you could fall through... that kind of crap kills me every time.

The Transformers famicom game? Where you have mountains in the background and you are optimus prime? Starscream and the gang bomb you? That game sucks its so hard, you die within 3 seconds if you are not VERY,VERY careful

So the actual name is mystery of convoy?

This is no contest

SINISTAR

I only killed my first Sinistar a few years ago. In the middle of laughing and celebrating Sinistar finally going down

"huh? what? LEVEL 2?!?!?!? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"

I tried to play Out of This World (SNES) and could not figure out what the hell was going on. Does that count?

Driver, which forces you to become highly skilled at playing the game before you actually get to go out and play it.

I had a big problem with the first level of Ghosts and Goblins for the Nes, the first level boss used to kill me over and over again. After giving it some time it's not that all to hard anymore.

That's level 3, not level one.

anyway, the 1st level of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts must've taken me at least 40 tries before I got it.

I've always thought that the first level of Double Dragon 3 is rediciously hard.

I can vouch for that. That game pissed me off with it's difficulty so back to EB it went.

I also have trouble with Super R-Type and Strikers 1945. I just suck at shooters, but I love them, isn't it ironic?

Oh and Pac-Man and Space Invaders

The Arcade version of Gradius 3 is much harder than Gradius V. First level at least, because I couldn't get much father on Gradius 3.

Brave Fencer Musashi's first boss, the steam knight, was one of the hardest in the game.

This is the only game, ever, that I gave up on the game for good without passing the tutorial. And I spent at least an hour trying!

For some reason, Metal Gear Solid on the PSX is just completely beyond me... I never made it past the first room of guards =/

yeah, that was hella annoying. but once you get passed that theres a good game to be played :)

My vote goes to Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox. You're still learning how to play the game and you get mobbed by ninjas, not to mention Burai took me about an hour to kill the first time I got to him.

Oh, and whoever mention Double Dragon 3 is right on point. That was ridiculously hard.

Target Earth for the Genesis...though I heard the sequel on the Saturn is even harder.

Yeah, I can vouch for that. The first mission of Assault Suit Leynos 2 is very hard until you learn how to master it, but after that it becomes a cakewalk.

There's a PC Engine shooter called Formation Armed F or something along those lines... still haven't beat the first level. The boss gets you every time because the boss is really close to you and the hit detection is really strict, if a bullet's even in your vicinity, it's death.

Me, 1985: Popeye for Colecovision, only got past the first level once. It seems much easier now, though.

Me, 1990: Double Dragon III. If that game were a person, I would've made my best attempts as a 7 year-old to kick it's ass, possibly employing the services of a whiffle bat... filled with cement.

Haven't really been as frustrated with games since then, and if so, usually not on the first level. Oh yeah, reason for including "Me" at the beginning of both of those...

My Neighbors, 1992: Dragon Warrior. Now, I know this game doesn't really have a "first level", but I let them borrow the game and, after a few days, they returned it saying "We couldn't figure out how to get out of the first room."

These kids were real bad, and in hindsight, I'm not sure why I let them borrow the game in the first place. Or maybe I'm just still pissed because they took my copy of Super Mario Bros 2 with them when they moved...

That's alright though, I'm sure at least one of them are off somewhere right now playing a new game, "Find the Good Vein!"...

I kid.

Adventures of Bayou Billy. By the time I get done with the first stage, I don't stand a chance at the rest of the game!

Jesus, how could I forget that game. Yes, Bayou Billy. The first level of that game pissed me off to no end. I think I once got far enough through it to pick up a gun once, yay!

Dragon's Lair - NES

Yes, Bayou Billy....after that, it's still tough, but things start to fall together. But that first level is waaaay too hard.

Wrath of the Black Manta had the hardest boss in the whole game in the first level. Tiny was a bitch.

Gradius 2's first level kicks the shit out of Gradius 3 or V's first level any day in terms of difficulty.

This was the first game that I thought of too. All of the levels have about the same difficulty, however you build your energy bar based on points scored. So the first stage of Kid Icarus is ridiculously hard because your energy bar is only one segment long! I still say it's one of the most backwards games ever made - it actually gets easier as you progress.

...still love the game though. :D

Can't believe I didn't think of this before...

Phantasy Star (SMS)

Ok, maybe not a "level" in the traditional term, but step outside of the VERY FIRST TOWN and there is only one battle (out of a possible 4 or 5 different possibilties) that you can even win at level 1... you need to save, and if you hit the wrong fight, restart... then if you DO get the "right" fight, you need to go back to town and heal immediately and repeat the process again until you hit level 2 heh.

Quite a contrast from (most) modern RPGs where you need to be a complete moron to even come close to dying and even a "challenging" boss fight is simply long, not dangerous.

Hey hey... This is actually a rather good game... Another World/Out of this World remains one of my favorite games on the SNES.

My vote Super Ghosts and goblins on the SNES.

Actually, World 2 is pretty damn hard in comparison. World 2-3 especially...that level is long and really hard, uh huh huh huh.

World 1-3 I remember as pretty tough too. World 3 and 4 are really easy tho...the dungeons all have a good challenge too. But world 2-3...damn...hardest level in the game.

LOTR: Return of the King.

that damn 1st level pissed me off. many people are good at the game, but I didn't like the fact that they put all these technical things in a hack n slash game, because that it what it is. then they made a sequel that was harder.

And that is why old school RPGS are so much better than modern ones. *rant*

Anyway, Mystery Quest for the NES had an impossible first level for me. Literally. I went into some building with giant praying mantisii and got stuck. Couldn't get out, couldn't go forward. Damn you Squaresoft!
