The Voice of a Gamer

So I was having a brief conversation with someone today when out of nowhere she asks, "Are you a gamer?"

The question wasn't entirely inappropriate under the circumstances, so I said yes.

"[Some associate of mine] plays a lot of computer games. Your voice reminds me of his," she said.

"Yes, perhaps there is some sort of correlation between computer usage and voice tone," I replied. "Someone should do a study."

"Not me," she said.

And so I got to thinking: Has someone in fact conducted a study of this sort? I imagine it would be pretty difficult to conduct such a study, as qualities of a person's voice (such as my slightly nasal twang) can come and go in different situations, even if you can find some way to measure such qualities. But then, I know nothing about the qualitative aspects of voice.

What do you think? Does such a relation exist?

To me, that sounds like an insult coming from her, and I would like to extend my hand....and pimp slap her....and say "Just cuz I talk this way doesn't mean I'm gamin'! Can't a fella talk about games without someone labeling my ass!?! You dumb bitch!"


Yet, after the slap, I must realize...the way we talk,the way we carry on about our love for the games and systems, it does come off as oddball to the public ear, I assume she had good intentions on asking you such a question. Yet, I am sensing a sterotype when i think about someone asking me a question like that, it's like coming up to a man with a guitar in his hand and asking him if he can play some Lynard Skynard right then and there....it just ain't gonna happen without a sense of annoyance.

I seriously doubt playing games affects your tone of voice; however, it doesn't sound like you were talking about games at the time. Hm. Strange, but it seems more of a coincidence than anything else to me.

Oh, no, it wouldn't be so much games causing a change in one's tone of voice as it would be somehow one's tone of voice leading someone to play games.

Geez, that makes so little sense when I type it. But then, correlations don't necessarily imply any kind of direct causal relationship (which is always very important to keep in mind).
