View Full Version : PS2 4 YEARS OLD TODAY

RCM

I didn't see anything about this but the popular Playstation 2 console is 4 years old in America today. I did buy a system 4 years ago today. Not a PS2, but a Genesis 3 in protest.

Like it or not, the PS was a great console for its time. This coming from a Saturn fella. It was powerful, easy to develop for, and had a bunch of games that we're kinda neato.

The PS2 has to be the PS antithesis. Everything should have gone wrong over at Sony. They had a lackluster launch lineup, shoddy hardware, and lots of hype. I guess hype was good. It saved the darn system!

I broke down in Feb. 2001 and picked up a PS2. Virtua Fighter 4 was coming to the PS2! Had to get it. In my opinion systems are defined not by hardware but by software. In the past 3 years and change Sony and their 3rd party developers have really made up for the lackluster launch. Happy birthday PS2.

Wow... it only took four years for the system to start releasing games I absoltutely had to have on a regular basis.

This months dilema? Phantom Brave vs. Star Ocean 3 vs. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne.

That means four years and one night ago, my wife and I were camped out in front of the Wal-Mart in Mustang, OK on lawn chairs, waiting to pick up two of their six PS2's.

I would go with Shin Megami or if your in a Strategy game mood Phantom Brave.

No no no. Star Ocean Till the End of Time is one of the better RPGs I have played in a long, long, LONG time. Phantom Brave is no where near the goodness of Disgaea and Shin Megami bored me to tears when I tried it.

Now Star Ocean? I rank that game up as one of the best RPGs on the PS2. Slightly behind Suikoden 3. Well, until Xenosaga II comes out that is :P

for some reason I never liked the PS2 besides a few games,I loved the PSOne but the PS2 wasnt as impressive as I thought it was suppose to be at the time,so it has a built in DVD,big freaking deal!

My first two launch games were Evergrace, which I played for a total of ten minutes, and Orphen, which I've beaten numberous times and adore. I still can't understand why people knock that game. Poor Orphen.

Though I do remember going to Toys-R-Us to pick up my reserved system and seeing this hugh ass line. Then about five minutes to the store opening, one of the employees comes out and states, if you don't have a pre-order slip and receipt, you aren't getting one. Pre-orders only. People started getting all pissed off. It was great. Then I got my games, went to pay for everything, walked outside, and had some lady stop me trying to buy my system off me for her kid for Christmas. It felt good to say "No, leave me alone" and placing it in my car.

Why did that feel good for?,If I was in your shoes I would have sold it to her above what you payed for it so you could get you more games and get the system the next week or something

Um...well for one thing, you couldn't buy them "the next week or something." PS2s sold out until after Christmas in this area, as well as across the country.

Tough decision here. Do I:

1 - Sell the PS2 to some lady for more then its worth, so her spoiled child can believe in Santa Claus...

or

2 - Keep the system I was smart enough to pre-order in the first place, not to mention saved up the cash for and play it...

If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have changed a thing. :D

Turning a quick buck is nice, but not on something you truly wanted.

That's strange but mine was a father that wanted me to do the same thing. I told him he should have gotten their earlier if he really wanted one. He looked at me for a second and said I was right and to have a Merry Christmas. He was a nice guy. Not nice enough to get my Ps2 though. ;)

Ok well I guess yall think differently on me on that subject,I use to be like that when I was younger but I realized their just damn games and you will get tired of them eventually,I am in my 20's so If I was able to get my hands on say like a PS3 before christmas with parents wanting to get it for their children and not being able too at the time for whatever their reason was,I would sell it to them for like 20 or 30 more bucks then I payed for it so I could get an extra game when I decided to buy the same gaming system later, that way I am looking out for myself and someone's else feelings.

Oddly enough there is a black lady who always begs for change around the shopping center, at the Gamestop I work at. She always has the same story about how she is trying to get enough change to buy her kids some hot dogs. Sad isn't? Feel bad for her? Yea, until you realize she has been playing that same sob story since Christmas of last year.

I can safely wager that most of the people who wanted Elmo dolls, PS2s, Furbies, etc for their poor kid who asked Santa for it, is gonna sell those bitches on Ebay and make a hell-of-a-profit.

You know why those friendly Gamestop, EB, Gamecrazy, etc employees keep asking you to reserve new systems or games like Halo 2? Cause it you want one, you ain't getting one without a pre-order....and sadly people think its bullshit. What does it matter if you drop 50/5 bucks upfront for a system/game you plan on purchasing anyways? You aren't loosing money. That drives me up the wall.

What does some black lady at the mall have to do with what I am saying? O_O

My best friend since 3rd grade stayed with me for a while and he worked at Funcoland when they were transforming into Gamestop,he would complain about the same things as you are as well and this is what I told him.

1.You get to give you opinions about video games and play the newest releases before most of the general public gets to

2.People who dont preorder games or systems usually put it off because the money is tied up in more important things at the time like rent or insurance, their not doing it to piss you off I am sure.

3.Their are a ton of benifits working at a game stores,
my friend would get this kid to steal games from Walmart,Target, then trade them in forstore credit which could be alot on a hot new release, would get like 30 in store credit or more then trade the credits for cash for like 25 outside or sometimes even in the store, depending on who was working with him.

You have a job that happens to be a passion hobby you have as well,I am just saying video games cause people to become greedy and selfish and alot of times I had to tell my friend to quit complaining because he would take like ultra rare games from rednecks that they had no idea were worth like 60 bucks and he would tell them the trade in credit was like 5 dollars.

Sorry to get offtopic just giving my counter opinion :D

My point was, that if you can read and interrupt things, you'd understand that just because some j-random person comes up to you and says "please sir/miss, sell me your ps2, my poor child wants it for Xmas" or "please sir/miss do you have any spare change for hotdogs" or "please sir/missr, whatever" they aren't always telling you the truth. I'm sure most women/men who wanted PS2s for their son/daughter/monkey for Christmas that year, were basically taking the systems and selling it for double what it was worth...or more. Tons and TONS of people were ass raping people in prices for PS2s on ebay, in newspapers, ect. People lie. Case in point. I didn't sell my PS2 cause I don't feel sorry for someone who waited to the last minute, didn't pre-order, or could possible be scamming. People love to scam. There.

Is that so difficult to understand or am I speaking another language here?

Anyways, blah blah blah. Happy 4 years mister PS2.

It took me a long time to warm up to the PS2. A damned long time.

I ran a game shop at the time of the launch. A game shop that had started to successfully convert all of the PSX owners over to the Dreamcast. Our Dreamcast orders were way up, people were getting into the system. The PS2 was scarce at launch, it was pretty much a pre-book only thing during the Christmas season. I sold 200 Dreamcasts in a 3 week period leading up to Christmas day because of it. I remember that we Fedexed 6 PS2s in on Christmas Eve day....and sold all of them for $700 each. People are stupid.

It was a bad time. People were generally pissed off because you COULD NOT get a PS2 for quite a while after the launch, memory cards were deemed to be way too expensive and we were shouted at time and time again for it....we sold them at the suggested retail BTW. The launch lineup was lackluster. It was just a shitty, lousy, way hyped up launch.

And through it all....we saw our healthy Dreamcast sales take the nastiest plummet that I've ever experienced. All of a sudden, people didn't want to know the system. All that they wanted was PS2, PS2, PS2. The mere mention of it made me sick.

I eventually warmed up to the PS2. After all, it had Turismo, FF....and a good library of RPGs. I sure despised it at that launch season though!!

Launch day adopter. Preordered my own, waited overnight in line at Best Buy to get one for a co-worker who gave me $100 for my effort.

Never been a dull moment with the system. Money well spent. Hell, I could have spent double the launch price and I'd still feel the same way.

A SYSTEM IS DEFINED BY ITS SOFTWARE ! very true although it didnt prove to be for my beloved Dreamcast oh well life goes on with my PS2!
I was a PS2 hater for sooo long because I knew what a great system the DC was and always will be so I was basically forced into buying my first PS2 about a year after its launch and it was mostly for Silent Hill 2 and MGS2 so it was well worth it and now after 4 years of experience with the PS2 I have gotten rid of my GC and Xbox becuase I simply could not afford to buy games for all three systems at the same time and when I had to make a choice there was always at least one NEW kick ass game that I had to have on my PS2 so my GC and Xbox did nothing but collect dust for over a year.
anyway happy birthday PS2. :D

*hugs ps2* Happy Birthday!!!

I wasn't able to get one on launch day. I remember ordering one (along with Gran Turismo 3, it was supposed to be a launch title) and the reservations were so backed up I didn't get one until late January/early February of 2001.

I remember when I got the phone call that evening from Babbages (do these exist anymore?) letting me know I could come pick up the PS2. The store was 30 minutes away...I was shaking with excitement the entire way there and the entire way home. I took the ps2 over to a friends house where several buddies were eagerly awaiting me. Since the release of GT3 had been delayed, I brought home FIFA Soccer 2001 and we all had a blast playing into the wee hours of the morning.

That PS2 is still working today, even though I had to adjust the laser on it recently due to the infamous disc read error...

I bought my PS2 after the hype died down -- a Amazon bundle pack with a second controller, a memory card, and three games for $500, which included the shipping by UPS. This was in March of April of 2001.

I only have one of those three games still -- Gradius III + IV. :)

Expensive, yes, but I could start playing my PS1 games on it (and promotly gave my old and starting to wear down PSX to a friend) and eventuly enough great stuff started to come out on the system, games like Final Fantasy X, Shadow of Destiny, and ROTK 7.

I try to get games for my PS2 last, with the XBox getting first dibs and GC second. However, the sheer popularity of the system means a lot of unique games come out for it only, like Koei and Square Enix games, so the system gets plenty of use. I only have about 10 PS2 games but my two recently buys are PS2 only -- Gradius V and Star Ocean 3 -- so it's been getting plenty of use. :D

I didn't care much for the PS2 when it first came out and I don't feel much differently now. But at least at some point I felt like I had to buy one (glares at X-box).

It's been a slow four years with a lot of unmemorable games. While I purchased twice as many games for the Gamecube in that time, I wouldn't say I'm thrilled with that system either. I much prefer the previous generation's PS1/Saturn/N64. And you gotta love the Dreamcast kinda stuck in between there.

So...uhh...happy birthday PS2...uhh,yeah...you're my 23rd favorite videogame system of all time.

<3 for butta and Flack.

Let's see...I picked up the PS2 during the 2nd rush, when it dropped to $200. I didn't get to fight any old ladies, but I did bring it home with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Parappa 2, and Dave Mirra BMX 2.

All things considered, the PS2 is my favorite video game system. I have many fond memories attached to THPS3, 4 and THUG, NBA Street Volume 2, Def Jam Vendetta, Grand Theft Auto III, ATV Offroad Fury, Get On Da Mic, Karaoke Revolution, Hot Shots Golf 3 and Fore, Manhunt, NBA Ballers, DDRMAX, Beatmania IIDX, Guitar Freaks & Drummania, Pop'n Music, Tekken Tag, Knockout Kings 2001, Gitaroo Man, and Timesplitters 2.

I'm looking forward to more greatness in the future.

I pre-ordered the PS2 after falling in love with the PS1 I had just bought in early 2000...

Then a day before the PS2 was released I realized I didn't really want the PS2 and was pressured into pre-ordering it by the EBX employees. So I sold my $50 pre-order ticket to a cow-orker for $75 so he could buy it for his boys for Christmas. It made me feel good inside and I was relieved I didn't have to pay the remainder of the $300 and I made $25 in the process.

Shortly after, I traded in my PlayStation and most of my games. (Wish I kept the games looking back. At least Crash and Spyro. Fortunately I did keep my Bubble Bobble.) Then in October of 2001, I bought my Cube. I had more fun with that than I ever would have with a PS2. Looking back, there really were no PS2 games for a while that I would have wanted to play. I would have been wasting $300 just to play DVD's and PSX games... (And I didn't even get into DVD buying until mid-2001.)

The next year, I got an Xbox for Christmas.

And in March of this year, against my wishes, my Brother got a PS2 for his birthday. He promptly got himself a butt-load of Final Fantasy games. It wasn't until Katamari Damacy that I found the PS2 worthy. And I blame that game for my spending $150 on a new smaller one. That and Jak and Daxter. Damn you, Naughty Dog! Damn you for creating another beautiful franchise. It was Crash Bandicoot that made my buy a PS1 in the first place.

The timing of when I got my PS2 was extremely ironic.

I bought my PS2 system, with Gradius 3 & 4 on the evening of 9/10/2001.
