I imagine that would be the one that's been making the rounds.
I maintain that it is a quality machine being used, and that ordinary Tetris engines commonly available in North America would simply not allow play at that speed.

What version of Tetris is that? What kind of machine is he playing it on? Are we sure that it isn't a faked video?
It reminds me of those people who can solve rubik's cubes in a few seconds, or those flat puzzles that were also marketed around the same time under the Rubik's name. Now that I think about it, where the hell is my rubik's cube? O_O

I hate to be a cynic, but I'm not buying it. I can't figure how he knows where the blocks will be lining up at that speed. I say faked.

i hope its fake....because, if its not, i feel sad for humanity that someone resorted to becoming that good at tetris.....

I've seen this posted at a few forums months ago, and the general consensus is that the original footage has been sped up. Disappointing, but reassuring at the same time because if someone WAS that good at Tetris, well, it'd be kinda scary.

The direct feed on the left matches the changes in backgrouds on the right side, and from what I could see before my eyes went absolutely cross-eyed, all the hand movements were correct.
I agree with the 'legit, just sped up video' argument. Though, regardless, that's damn impressive.
Wonder if you can unlock Tetris Tofu and drop knife only blocks ;)

I've been told that apparently the joystick provides excellent tactile feedback as the blocks are shifted space by space. (That would be a substantial improvement over more common machines.)

IF it is legit, it might not be a practicing to become great thing... some people just have a natural talent for certain types of things.
Someone may have talent, but not that much natural talent.

I'm just saying that while it might take one person 2000 hours get that good, it could take someone else 200. These numbers were of course pulled straight out of my ass.

Reminds me of those awesome speedrun videos for NES games and such. Those are SOOOO fun to watch.

I've seen this video pop up a few time before, and I agree that it looks real, but do to the way the blocks move it's most likely sped up. When I first saw it though, before thinking about it logically I was like "damn that guy is fast."

I too have been wondering this! What version of Tetris IS that? Obviously it's being played on some JAMMA cab.. I wonder if it's emu'd :D

Ok.. just answered my own question. It's Tetris the Grandmaster.

Playable in ZINC. :)

I would have to say fake. Look solely at his hands and ignore the rest. The movements do not seem to be at natural speed.... But still impressive ven if it was 50% slower.

I used to be darned near that good in the Arcade with Capcom's recent version, I could play that flawlessly but I COULD NOT play that fast. If that wasn't sped up that would have to be a very good joystick to help you coordinate your moves. Looks sped up to me, it's just too jumpy looking to me too. BTW I set high scores on the Capcom Tetris about two or three years ago at my local Super K Mart, I even beat all of the computer set high scores. My friend was with me and he can play some serious games and even he was dumbstruck at my playing ability.

I'm really kinda surprised that ANYONE here thinks that's real. There were more giveaway mistakes in that than in most of the previous "speedruns" I've seen before.
Personally, I can't stand almost ANY speedruns anymore since it's so unbelievably easy to fake them. Especially a game like tetris that you can just push the fast forward button. For everything else, unless it's a poor quality VHS camcorder (which is harder to fake) recording, it's almost always a case of using emulators.

I think if it's stated up front, then that's fine.
Like a lot of people got the wrong idea with that Super Mario Bros. 3 speedrun that was posted a while ago by saying it's 'fake'.. But of course what they failed to realize was it was never even posted as an actual run, but rather a perfect game using savestates. So it was more a movie put together to watch and be entertained by and not as any demonstration of someone's skill.
You try putting together a movie of a perfect run in a game with savestates. It's a lot of effort :P
But yeah, that Tetris vid is obviously sped up.

i'm sorry, it was me who was in that vid. yes i AM that fast. anybody that would like to vouch for it can certainly come watch me.
NAH, i'm just kidding. it looks very sped up. the way some of the pieces move is something that doesn't work in tetris. like the 1 "T" pieces (the ones that look like a T, they can move in a 180 degree direction with a simple shift of a joystick. that happens a bunch of times. you have to move it twice, 2 times 90 degrees. they don't show that, which means they went through the vid too fast, which means it is sped up.
hell we could all be wrong and homeboy is that fast, but it looks sped up imo

For what it's worth, the two movies are in synch (though I feel the hands window might be a frame or two slow).
Seems to me that it'd be vaguely possible for somebody to get to be that fast at Tetris - perhaps they just go by the color of the block shown in the square above and concentrate on the playing field. Still surprises the hell outta me.
At least it was fun to watch!

Absolutely. I think speedruns are great because they show what is the limits of what is technically possible....and just fun in general. Anyone who tries to pull off a speedrun and say it's real is an asswipe.

The problem with the video, is you can plainly see some of the blocks "roll" or "wrap" around and tuck UP underneath another piece. Hard to describe, pretty easy to see. Not only is it sped up, it's sped up a LOT.

I still say that it is impossible to say for sure without actually seeing a Tetris the Grand Master cab.
(If nothing else, at least consider the Pop 'n' Music video that has been making the rounds. That one was definitely not sped up, and although it's hard to see the screen, it's still quite impressive.)

do you have a place to watch the pop n music one?

That MUST be sped up. I doubt they would make it so fast you couldn't see the pieces fall.

Ah, but Zinc does not have the original cabinet's controls.

What controls do you need. It aint like it's a pre-84 custom cabinet. ;)
It's JAMMA...and if you look at that video probably an egret JAMMA at that(?). i.e. good old generic joystick and buttons :P

This post died a long time ago, but I wanted to clarify that this video is not sped up. I've only played the original Tetris: The Grandmaster [this video is of the sequel], but the pieces really do fall that quickly.
However, the controls are pretty loose in that you can rotate the next piece before it starts to fall [by holding down the rotate button]. Also, there is a lot of freedom to move the pieces and rotate them after they land.

It's a Japan only game so it really shouldn't be all that surprising that someone there mastered it.
If you doubt the veracity of the video, you can play the original Tetris Grandmaster on MAME. Arika, the maker of this version of Tetris, also has videos posted on its website [which it almost assuredly wouldn't doctor up].

Speaking of sick Tetris, ever hear of Birdris? Rather bare-bones as far as graphics goes, but it does have a genuinely sadistic AI doling out the pieces.

Personally I find it to be 100% believable.
It's possible to become that good at Tetris (or any game for that matter), if you invest a lot of time into it.
