Evening Folks,
I found a few NES strategy guides at a local shop that I haven't been able to find much information on - namely if they were released in stores or mail order, and perhaps a ballpark figure on their estimated value. Unfortunately they aren't all in great condition so I don't think they are worth all that much, but information on them is elusive enough that my interest is piqued. If anyone could help me out, it would be appreciated:
1. Ultima Exodus

I think the images explain enough about the guides that I don't need to repeat what you can already see here. I believe I've seen the the Zelda guide a few times on eBay before and that it was something you had to send in to Nintendo for, but the other two guides I'm kinda clueless on. If anyone does have any questions about them, feel free to ask. Thanks!
Later.

Would you be interested in selling one or both of them?

I don't have any info on them other than that I've never seen either of those before and they're VERY cool. Take good care of 'em (or sell to someone who will)!
Holy crap!! I didn't know that they had guides back then.
I managed to buy a sealed copy of Ultima Exodus a few months ago. A NES RPG collector gave up the hobby and pawned his stuff, which I scored about an hour later. Got Crystalis, Faxanadu, Dragon Warrior, Star Tropics 1 & 2 and Gauntlet 2 as well.

My oldest "guide" is the Hint Sheets for all the Scott Adams (Some would call him the Father of the computer game industry) adventures, published by Adventure International. I have an original copy tucked neatly away for the day I can get it signed. I'm note sure of the copyright date but it would almost have to be late 70's early 80's.

It was available by the mail only. I think other FCI games also have this kind of guide.
For Lolo and Zelda, it's first time i saw them, very cool.

I managed to get a copy of the Ultima Exodus guide at a flea market for $1 about a month ago. I figured I would finally get around to playing the game but I still haven't....

Wow, guides for Exodus and Lolo's Adventures? I take it the Exodus guide is NES-only, which is even more astonishing. Good finds!

There's at least one other DP forum member who has that Exodus guide (me). Found it in a thrift earlier this year. It's a very well laid out guide, of a higher quality than I would have expected for the time period. I didn't realize it was a mail-order only deal; guess it was a better find than I thought!
The LoZ guide was available through the Fun Club News (and maybe early Nintendo Power too, can't remember for sure). I used to drool over it, but somehow never could bring myself to spend the money since I didn't actually own the game at the time (I always played a friend's copy). I regret not buying it now!

That Ultima guide is pretty cool. I definately could have used one of those back in 1990 or so.

While I don't have a game room quite as interesting as some of you, I do collect everything NES and on (basically very little Atari-era) and keep good care of the stuff I come across... Less it's a copy of Criticom on the Saturn. That's probably the only game I've ever gotten rid of because it was so hiddeous. :P
I'm not so much interested in selling it really as I'm just interested as to what the items were. Thanks for the information so far! :) I guess all three of them could be considered mail-order then which is interesting, though I'm still kinda at a loss on their estimated value. It seems like they are unfamiliar enough so that they can be had for cheap sometimes in a used game store, but they seem rare (and pretty cool) enough to be worth something.
If anyone has any questions yet about the guide(s) that I can help with, let me know and I'll try to respond in the near future.

I used to own the Ultima Exodus guide when I was younger. If I recall correctly though I think I bought it from KB or even Kmart. I bought the game and guide after I beat Dragon Warrior and was finally tuned into RPG's.
Alas, I believe I threw it away back in 1995 when I had my video game revolt. (also threw away about 100 or so Nintendo boxes...) Still kicking myself in the head for that one.
The first few pages of that guide had a comic of the story of Ultima up to Exodus. Really cool from what I remember.

I've got the Ultima Exodus guide. Things in perfect shape too. Bought it off Ebay a couple years ago for $15. Sweet little guide.
I recall seeing an full page add for the Ultima guide in the back of one of my old EGM's (might have been issue #2 or #3). Think it said that they were available also at TRU, so I don't think it was a mail-order exclusive.
I've got a couple of those Zelda Tips & Tactics books. Were those mail-order only? I always thought they came packaged with the game.

That Exodus one is relatively common as old school guides go...they come up every now and then. For some reason I thought it came with the game, but it may have been a special offer in the back of the insruction book?
As for the Zelda one, it was originally available in Nintendo Power's predecessor, The Nintendo Fun Club News, a qurterly publication. I bought it then along with a very similar Super Mario Brothers one. They both may also have been avbailable in early issues of NP.

That last post is correct. Through a special offer with Nintendo Fun Club News (the precursor to Nintendo Power) I have both the Zelda and Super Mario hint books. Both are very good, and I still have both. And no, I AM NOT SELLING! :D
They may have been offered through Nintendo Power, but I DO clearly recall seeing BOTH books sold directly through Nintendo's store -- call them and order it, like many of their hint guides. They were selling them as late as 1992 before stock ran out.

I have a Lolo guide but it is missing the cover. I got it for cheap because it is seldom seen and not many people are looking for it. But I love to collect strategy guides. I have about 50 of them. :)

I used that Ultima guide back in the early 90's to beat the game. Took a whole summer to do so, but the guide was invaluable. I think I got it at Toys R Us, but it was a long time ago.

I think that about solves these riddles, thanks! :) I got the guides "free" with mint copies of both LoZ and Lolo - far better condition than the ones I already had - so it was a very cool bonus to say the least.
Thank you for the help, folks.
