It is NOT easy trying to build a guide around a system that you don't have a good collection for, but this nice little handheld system has a substantial game library and until now was a gaping hole in our database.

Until today.

http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/listing.cmf?system=85

So now that I've got the basic list and some basic info out there, I really need some help filling it in. I'm hoping that I can garner some support from the Roundtable here. Some things that would help:

- If you own the system, you've surely got some input regarding the system and its games... is there anything you can fill in? Genres, descriptive info, historical info, etc?

- If you own some games, can you share which ones are "English-friendly" for the importers here in the US?

- If you have the emulator for WonderSwan, I need screen shots!

- If you collect for the system or are a frequent eBay watcher, what are the rare ones? Is anything on the current list really tough to find?

- Editors, proofreaders and troubleshooters - do you see anything missing or incorrectly listed (some of these titles were tough since they're in Japanese and have no English text on them).

Your input helps! Our database is only as good as the people who build it, and the WonderSwan is a system deemed rather obscure by my American editorial circle :)

Thanks! I'll update that with the first batch of big help from the Roundtable :)

Is it supposed to be InuYasha? I can't tell if that Y is intentionally capital or not.

I don't know. I just noticed that you had an "I" in front of the y.

Well, as far as rarity goes, Gunpey (the original) is pretty common.

I still haven't figured out whether there's any difference between WS Crystal and WS Color. And then is there complete backward compatibility?

WS is a great system, like NGP, although iffy demand for WS in the US keeps prices down. There is clearly one HUGE reason to get one:

Crazy Climber

In the guide, it would be nice to know which are playable without knownledge of Japanese. For example, is Wizardry?

My WS stuff is packed up- and I must have only around 6 titles... Wish I could be of more assistance!

Ok, so these are just for the Wonder Swan or all WS? I took a quick look and that's it. I'll be glad to give any information on the stuff I have.

There is a difference in the color and crystal, but can't recall at the moment. I believe one of the biggest things is, the crystal doesn't play b&w games. Of course... I could be way off base. LOL

* Edit

Never mind I took a closer look regarding the b&w/color issue.

I volunteer to do box scans once I get my scanner working with the office computer. That is if you'd like some.

I still haven't figured out whether there's any difference between WS Crystal and WS Color. And then is there complete backward compatibility?

They're almost identical - the SwanCrystal has a TFT display, a clearer screen. Games are all backwards compatible though I've never tried the other way (for example, a color game on the B/W unit), though I'd imagine they're incompatible that way.

In the guide, it would be nice to know which are playable without knownledge of Japanese. For example, is Wizardry?

I'd like to know that as well! "English-friendly" titles. I'll add that to the list above, thanks!

The balck and white system can NOT play color games (I just tried it), and it makes sense because the color games run on a larger screen.

Here are the games that I have had experience with:
Makaimura: Most parts of game are playable without Japanese knowledge

Gunpey (B+W): Games is in English mostly

One Piece: Swan Colloseum: fairly easy to play without knowledge of Japanese

Star Hearts: it's an RPG... VERY difficult to understand for non-Japanese-speakers

Clock Tower: not very easy to understand

Yes please. Box scans provide good info and if nothing else they're compatible with the database structure so they can be shown with the games they represent!

There was a shooter for it released late in the system's cycle called Judgment Silversword. It was the winning entry in the WonderWitch contest. I'm guessing it's a pretty rare find.

That should be Kaze no Klonoa, not Kaze Klonoa. It's a B&W game, too.

And also a fine import for English speakers. Just hard to get here cuz it's one of the few really appealing WS games.

Hello Mod & All,
I have a Wonderswan Color and 2 games. One is Final Fantasy II and the other one is called Gundam Seed. I can tell you that Final Fantasy II is very hard to manage without knowkiing a fair bit of Jap. I can scan the box if you like.

The other game Gundam Seed I just got in the mail today from Hong Kong. I haven't had the opportunity to play Gundam Seed yet but I will be playing it tonight and I will post on this thread when I have given it a good play. I can also scan in the cover and what else for this one. What of the Gundam Seed would you like me to scan? (ie. box, manual, cart etc)

Also what is the e-mail address I send the scans to? I'm not sure how to scan and post at DP forums so an e-mail address will suffice.
Regards,

Nubian.

Yes Judgement Silversword: Rebirth Edition. Go here (http://members2.jcom.home.ne.jp/jss2) for the official homepage, here are some movies from the game (http://members2.jcom.home.ne.jp/jss2/dl.htm).

There was another game released afterwards called Dicing Knight (http://www20.cds.ne.jp/~murasame/source/diesingnight.htm), this to had it's origins in a WonderWitch competition.

In the guide, it would be nice to know which are playable without knownledge of Japanese. For example, is Wizardry?
Yes it it. It's one of the few dual language games. Actually several of the japanese Wizardry remakes (like the gameboy color ones) have an english / japanese language option.

There was an english version of two of the Digimon games. One was Digimon ver Wonderswan, the other one I don't remember the name on.

What about the limited edition releases of FF1 and 2 bundled with the system?
Very easy to find. Final Fantasy 1 & 2 was probably the best selling games for the system. Remember reading some where that FF1 sold about 500K and FF2 sold some 330K

My game 'With You', (SWJ-SHLC01) comes with a doll and collectors card in an oversized box.

Third game is Densha de Go1, B&W version.

The WonderSwan is an excellent system. I have both the color and crystal versions. The color has a larger screen, but it is not as clear as the crystal. The crystal is also noticably smaller. My only complaint about the actual system is the d-pad--or that is the complete lack of a d-pad instead, x, and y pads which are composed of four buttons. It takes a little geting used to, and the vertical as well as horizontal game play is cool.

They (the cystal specifically) are some of my favorite handhelds. I don't have many games, but have the following: Rockman WS, Gunpey EX, Golden Axe, Final Fantasy, and a Squaresoft Chocobo game the title of which I have no idea (it is my only non color game). I love the megaman/rockman series and WS is very fun, the levels are short enough to play in one sitting and it has good battery back-up, there are some plot/item elements that are lost on me due to the language barrier, but all and all it is very playable to the non-japanese player; also, I beleive there is one more additional Rockman title for the system which I have been dying to try. Gunpey EX is a very simple and addicting puzzlish game (hard to explain exactly but...) in which you line up shapes to form lateral lines as the the screen scrolls upward; this is the only game I have where the system plays in the vertical mode, fun game all and all. Golden Axe, seems to me to be a competent port of the arcade, not much to say except, it is non-japanese speaker freindly, has a good control layout, and pretty goof graphics. Final Fantasy is a graphically enhanced version of the original NES/famicom game that looks kinda similair in layout to maybe the enhanced playstation version or perhaps more likely the upcomming gameboy versions. If you don't understand japanese though it is pretty much unplayable--looks nice though. The Chocobo game is black and white (which does indeed run and look beautiful on the other systems, this however is also unplayable for non-japanese readers.

BTW, the games for the system have great cases, I hate how GBA games don't have cases. The Wonderswan games look cool too, they have exposed connecter pin things so it is good they have cases. Also, vidgame.net has some good pictures of the system games and various packaging, might be worth a look for those who have never seen one.

Godd stuff! I have some games, too. Yay!

I have only a list what I haveat this time so this is coming pretty much from my head. I can check them better later:

Tarepanda Gunpey/Tarepan Gunpei: A variation of the Gunpey games (doh), now with popular and cute pandas. Vertical, linkable. Pretty much playable without Japanese knowledge. Also available as a pack-in with Tarepanda-edition Wonderswan. #SWJ-BAN01F.

Seeding Bird/Tanemaki: Your birdfriend heads to South for the winter months and you're stuck with watering the plants. In other words, direct waterdrops to help flowers grow faster. Vertical, linkable. Playable without Japanese knowledge. Comes with a cardboard book The Bird Seeds. #SWJ-BAN01E.

Hamster: B/W. It's a freaking hamster, what more do you want? Haven't taken much time with this one. I think you should nurture it like one of them virtual pets. Basic actions are represented with action buttons but still Japanese knowledge required. Linkable. Publisher Interbec, #SWJ-BEC003.

The following games are rather self-explanatory or I haven't played them much: :hmm:

Kinnikuman 2nd Generation - Dream Tag Match: Linkable. #SWJ-BANC20.
Guilty Gear Petit: Linkable. #SWJ-SUMC07.
Wild Card: Linkable. #SWJ-SQRC04.
Blue Wing Blitz: Turn-based Strategy. #SWJ-SQRC05
Final Fantasy: #SWJ-SQRC01.
Side Pocket: SWJ-DTE001.

Here's a good site with some basic info on many games:

This is GREAT info and will go a long way toward stabilizing the current list (LIME Rider... heh heh) and getting the "English-friendly" stuff going.

Screen shots are still going to be a great help, as would basic descriptions of the games if you know 'em - for example, what kind of a game IS Rhyme Rider? The database isn't looking for a full review, just a basic "what it is" told in a sentence or two.

I'm going to batch all of the updates I received to date and up to tomorrow night for tomorrow night, I'll mention the update here when that happens.

Thanks, team! :)

I had one, sold it for.....Saturn imports I think. Now I want one again reading through this thread. I had:

New Japan Pro Wrestling (B&W) (a nice arcadey wrestler, like Pro Wrestling on NES)

Turntablists: DJ Battle (B&W) (holy shit I want this game again. Great music game that plays like an actual DJ Battle. You press the 8 buttons for different loops and effects, and you earn points by staying on beat and finding hidden combos)

Mr. Driller (Color) (Very very good port of Mr. Driller.)

Hello MOD & All,
Okay, I played 'Gundam Seed'last night.
'Gundam Seed' is for Wonderswan Color or SwanCrystal. Gundam Seed is a side scrolling shooter and has some very good graphics and sound. It has various text throughout the game but when it comes down to actually playing you don't need to know Japanese at all.

If you know 'Gates of Zendacon' for the Atari Lynx, well Gundam Seed is a little bit like that but Gundam Seed is much faster with better graphics and sound. Hope this helps when your new compiling your Wonderswan database. I will send the box scans a little later.

Hello MOD & All,

I just e-mailed 4 scans to the Digital Press e-mail address. The scans are for the Wonderswan games boxes, carts and manuals for 'Gundam Seed' and 'Final Fantasy II.'

Hope these help when you are compiling your Wonderswan database.

Thanks also to the guy who sent the e-mail with all the links to the demos of the Wonderswan games. 'Swan Colleseum' & 'Kinnieum Tag Match' look like 2 games I will be buying in the future as they seem like games that don't require you to know Japanese.

BTW, does anyone know if the Ghost n' Ghouls Wonderswan game is any good? I think it's only available in B&W.

Thanks for the info, I have a question about this one in particular. I've been able to find Digital Monster ver Wonderswan but not Digimon. If you notice, there seem to be two separate series on the list. Can you (or anyone) shed a little light on this? Are they truly different or has something been lost in translation?

It's the same series. The different names are probably because the Digimon logo contains both (Digimon is short for Digital Monsters).

Yeah, it is a very good version and you don't need Japanese (obviously!) to play it - I think it's called Maikimara or something, can't quite remember off-hand. It is only available in B&W...although still very good looking. :)

Fishing Freaks: Bass Rise

You haven't put up the GunPey boxed with the WS yet. Did/do you plan to? Just curious.

Hey MOD & All,
I just found out that the Wonderswan game 'SD Gundam: Operation U.C.' is a side scrolling shooter. You can get screenshots from the Bandai site. Here is a link to a review of SD Gundam Operation':

Actually you'll find this site 'Cloudchaser' has several reviews of Wonderawn Color games. It's probably the site with the most reviews for Wonderswan on the whole on the net. Believe me, I have put a decent 3 and a half hours into searching for Wonderswan reviews. The other site with a few reviews is gameFAQ.

Maybe we can all get together and review at least one Wonderswan game so that Digital Press is at the forefront for Wonderswan reviews. Thanks to those who gave me info on Ghost's n Ghouls (Makaiura) I've got it coming from Honk Kong in the mail now that you guys told me it's so good.

I'm discovering that the Wonderswan Color is probably the best handheld there is. I thought Neo geo Pocket Color was but after playing Gundam Seed I now think the WSC rules.

Regards,

Nubian.

I don't have this item in the database yet because I'm not clear on what it is. Is the WS itself anything special (one of the special editions or exclusive colors)? What else came with the system? Any info you can provide would really help! Once I've got the item in the database I can add the pics too.

Joe, I have four new box scans if you'd like them.

Also... not WS related, but I also have some more NGPC scans if you'd like them. I know the others have not been posted yet, but I'm sure in due time. :D

Yeah I've been slacking on getting graphics into the database. Or general site maintenance for that matter. It's "show season" which means my free time is pulled away from the site. If you send it, I'll eventually use it, that's all I can tell ya.

Thanks!
