im looking to buy a system not sure what system i want.I have a few questions

1. is the cd speed on the regular neo cd really unbearable like many people say?

2.Ive heard you can play backups without a mod on the cd system is that true?

3. can you get super 8 man for the cd?

what is the going rate for each system

i enjoy the kof series ,samuri {sp?} showdown seiries ,shmups and some sports {baseball stars 2 2010 baseball ect.

thats about it ,any info would be helpfull .
i also checked out neo-geo.com already.

1. To quote an employee of Buy-Rite games: "I can repair a Sega Saturn while my Neo Geo CD is loading a game". It's really bad on the later titles....imagine waiting about 30 seconds between rounds in King of Fighters '98! However, the Neo CDZ pretty much eliminates any load time concerns. Later games are still a pain though.

2. Dunno. Probably.

3. Nope, no Eightman for the Neo CD.

Going rates for the systems? Hmm....expect to pay around $300 for a cartridge system (AES), slightly less for a Neo CD, and slightly more for a Neo CDZ.

I have a Neo Geo CD frontloader and I don't mind the load times. It is 15-20 seconds between battles on most fighting games, and almost 30 seconds on KoF 98 however. But then, I had a Commodore and sometimes had 15 MINUTE wait times to load a game. It's not that bad, especially if you can't afford AES cartridge games. Figure the games are cheapest on the regular Neo Geo CD, but they load slower. The MVS arcade carts are a bit more than CD games, but you have to either buy a $250 convertor or get an MVS arcade system or Supergun...hassle. The AES carts load VERY fast, but they start at around $30-50 and work their way up to $2500 for Metal Slug! Average AES cart prices is around $100-200 per game vs. the $15-30 per game for CD games. If you have patience, the CD is the way to go.

System prices (these are just approximate costs):

Neo Geo CD frontloader (HUGE!): $200-275
Neo Geo CD top-loader: $150-250
Neo Geo CDZ (has twice the ram so it loads more into memory, but does NOT have a double speed CD-ROM!): $200-$275
Neo Geo MVS arcade machine: $300-1000+ (and shipping is SPENDY)
Supergun and Neo Geo MVS board: $300-500
Neo Geo AES: $250-500 (depends on the version and the store)

I don't know anything about playing backups on it as I've never had a reason to test that yet, but 8Man is sadly only available for AES cart and MVS cart. All in all, the CD is cost effective, and the AES is the best all around but the most expensive.

Hope that helps!

Get the MVS arcade. I mean, it's not so good for collecting, but if you want to play the games, they are far cheaper, unless they are brand new. KOF 2k2 is what, 1500 bucks MVS, but i guaruntee you in a year it will be half that at least.

Well if you're not into collecting a supergun or MVS unit is the way to go. Games are cheap and are obviously arcade perfect.

If you have the money an AES unit is probably the most desired system since it has the speed of the MVS with the collectability of a home system. Also all new Neo Geo games are coming out in AES or MVS format only (no CD games anymore).

A Neo Geo CD or CDZ is the route to go if you're on a budget. It has most of the AES games (no 8 Man though), and even some exclusives. The loading times for the earlier games (like those under 80 Megs) is about 15 seconds at the begining of the game and maybe a few seconds between fights. You don't get into the ungodly loading times until you play the later games like KOF 98 or Last Blade 2. However some games load in the middle of a level like Metal Slug 2 (no good), so beware of that little nightmare. Also I've been told that to speed up some games they removed frames of animation! But they also redid some of the soundtracks.

Remember that each system has its share of unique titles (the MVS system has the most titles overall). So a true collector would get a MVS or AES and a CDZ. I know I'm going to get a CDZ eventually (if only for Crossed Swords 2).

So to summarize:

MVS: Lots of titles, cheap, no collectability value, fast, butt ugly.
AES: Expensive, large selection of titles, high collectability, fast.
CD: Cheap, smaller library, slow, somewhat collectable, better music (some games).

Actually, almost ALL the same games came out for the MVS and the cart system. There are a VERY few games that are MVS only and a VERY few games that are AES only. The system with the least titles is the CD system, lacking about half of the shooters, half of the Metal Slug titles, and a bunch of later games.

If you're worried about being able to get things and you're on a budget as well, the MVS is the way to go. Just be sure you can do upkeep on an arcade machine before you get one. Personally, I always like the full machines and hate the Superguns. But basically, the MVS and the AES have almost exactly the same library :)

As my friend Chris Mullins, who used to be a big neo geo collector (he wrote the FAQ on it!) told me once, he was able to finish a full chapter of Hunchback of Notre Dame waiting for the Neo CD to load on the later games.

If you're going to go the MVS arcade cabinet route you might as well make it a MAME machine. It only costs a bit more and you can play almost every Neo Geo game out there.

Gotta go, Robo Army just came in the mail!
