This is dumb. Any store who breaks the street date and is reported to be doing so to the game publisher will be exposed (both the store and the head office of the chain it's a part of) to severe penalties like delays in receiving future releases by that publisher, etc.
I love it when these big games come out. The whole world goes unnecessarily rabid. I'll wait til Halo 2 goes greatest hits. Then I'll think about buying it.

That's the thing, tho. With the big batch of A-list titles being released over the next few weeks, there's a lot of street date restrictions, many of which are particularly monitored by the publishers. However, from that gaming-age thread, it seems that that chain (Meijer) is known for breaking street dates. It's a wonder they receive any first-to-market titles...

I read that as Half Life 2.
Can you guess what I'm wanting more than anything?

Think about it though. Meijers and Wal-Mart are huge. In many places in the country, those stores are the only option for buying games other than mail/internet. I'm pretty sure Wally World is still the biggest toy retailer in the US.
So, if either of those guys breaks a street date, do you think MS (or who ever) is going to put the screws to them? Really, if MS wanted to push it, they could turn around and say "well, guess which system we won't be carrying any longer" and that would hurt MS infinitely more than it would hurt Meijers or Wal-Mart.
Now, if Ye Olde Moms and Pops Video Game Emporium was to break a street date, yeah, they're asking to get reamed. They don't have the muscle to fight it. The Meijers and Wal-Marts of the world are big enough to do pretty much what ever they want and the companies are probably going to turn a blind eye to it because they can't afford to offend the big guys. Their financial power is too great.
