Cell Shaded Polygons...
A 2D fighting series...

Picture it, the look of (or a better look than) the 640x480 sprites featured in Guilty Gear.

Now Picture All the Insanely realistic Animation in SoulCalibur II.

...Why haven't 2D fighting companies looked in to using Cell Shaded Polygons????

Yes but Those are considered 3D games.

You can do Cell Shaded Polygons on a 2D playing field. Capcom did an amazing job at it with Viewtiful Joe. Think of what they could do with Street Fighter Alpha 4...

if street fighter would ever go cell shaded i think there would mass murder and rioting in the streets. most SF fans are oldschool, they would be pissed off.

SF has changed since its beggining, and when it did try to change (EX plus Alpha) the game bombed like never before.

as long as its not a popular franchise, sure let them make a 2d cell fighter. i just dont wanan see a beloved franchise get burned.

I've heard that Budokai games are horrible. I don't even know what Street Fighter would look like cell shaded. I think it's good enough as it is. I don't really know what much more can be done to improve Street Fighter games...the graphics at least. They are good. A firend and I have been playing SF III: third strike for DC and the graphics are great, just most of all the characters suck and the fighting styles of them are pretty bad. Also, everyone has the same super moves. It's really quite boring.

The majority of Cell Shaded games I've seen all have cartoon like graphics... Would you not agree?

It's not that they have to be that way, its just the main appeal to making / playing a Cell Shaded game.

Now as far as (Popular) 2D fighters go, Street Fighter has got to be the most cartoony. As far as look goes I mean, just compare Street Fighter (Alpha series and III series) to say KOF. You wouldn't really be changing the look of the series to much by doing an all out "Toon" Shaded Street Fighter game. BUT... a game doesn't have to be "Toon" Shaded to be a Cell Shaded game. I say, the next evolution in 2D games will be the way of Cell Shading, they already started (Viewtiful Joe).

i really hope SNK never makes a cell shaded game. i could care less what capcom does to streetfighter, but SNK hopefully wont because cell shading looks ricidulous to me. i really cant stand it, and dont wanna see it screw up a perfectly good new KOF game.

Yeah TOTALLY!!! I mean, why ruin KOF with Cell Shading, when you can ruin it with full 3D :P Ahhh, Maximum Impact indeed.

By the Way... I do prefer SNK over Capcom.

lol, not what i meant, KOF should have never gone 3D. I mean don't ruin the 2D KOF games with cell shading.

I say, give Cell Shading time to evolve. Clover Studios is on top of their game when it comes to making art out of Cell Shaded Graphics. Okami just looks amazing, and Viewtifull Joe did the perfect job of translating 2D to 3D while still keeping the exact 2D look and feel. In a few years, Cell Shading will probably be the best way for a company to completely realize a Modern Day "2D" game.
