So I just recently purchased a 51" RPTV set and was all excited. Virtua Cop 2 on a big ass TV!! So i hook up the Saturn and guess what, it doesnt work! Anyone else have problems getting the guns to work on a rear projection TV set?

Light Guns don't work on projection T.Vs. I had the exact same problem when i tried to play Time Crisis on my 53 inch. Should got a Plasma LOL

Apparently there are light guns for rear-projection TVs (was it Scorpion 3?) but they're mainly for PlayStation. Maybe it would work with a PS2 to Saturn controller adapter?

Anyway it is a bad idea to use games on projection television because it will burn through. Unless the manual states otherwise,

Heavens no! There's even less chance of a gun working with a plasma screen. The gun relies on the left-to-right/top-to-bottom scanning nature of a CRT.

That's interesting. I guess game creators will have to start addressing that compatibility issue.

Good question. I wonder if lightgun games will work with your VF2 cab.

Look very carefully around the monitor bezel. You'll notice about a dozen little IR receiver windows. Personally I think this sensor method sucks, because the calibration accuracy depends on the position of the gun. For example, if you stand a few feet to the left of where the operator had the gun while calibrating, the targeting will be off. Namco seems to do a WAY better job of making arcade light gun hardware. As far as I can tell, their guns are actually sensitive enough to read the CRT projection scan (unless there's a separate sensor on the Time Crisis cabinets that I just haven't found yet).

I know I can burn-in my TV, thats why the contrast never goes above 50 and I dont play any games with static images for more the 30min at a time. Some games are a real piss off like NHL 2k5. The only static image is the scoreboard overlay and there is no option to turn it off! 2k3 had the option dammit.

yeah theres a general consensus against using projection with gaming. especially classic gaming.

That's why I ended up paying extra money to get a regular widescreen HD TV as opposed to a projection model.

Keep in mind, even a CRT HDTV isn't guaranteed to work with a light gun. You'll have to get a model that allows you do disable progressive scan conversion for non-progressive scan signals. And unfortunately, this seems to be a rare feature judging by my experiments with the display models in various stores.

Is burn-in actually permanent with today's modern monitors? Or does it go away if you leave them off for long enough? Or maybe there's some special electrical cleaning procedure?

It's a little sad to see all those HOTD3 machines in arcades that are already severely burned in.

Even on a projection TV, normal gaming will NOT burn it in these days. Sure, if you play the same game 24/7 it will, but otherwise you're fine on anything in the last 10 years.

Also, the belief that most light guns don't work on all projections TVs is plain wrong. My old RPTV worked with Saturn, PSX, ansd Dreamcast guns just fine. My new one, which converts everything to 540p doesn't. Most new ones won't though, that's true.

My 50" monitor doesn't have those 12 sensor points, I guarantee it. I've taken the screen off to clean it and there's nothing but fibreboard there.

No no, my cabinet is VF2. RCM mentioned it because it's the same Model 2 architecture as HOTD and therefore is a good conversion candidate.

Ah, okay. Now I get what you're saying. The Sega IR monitor bezel is probably only included with the games that have light guns. As for whether or not kits are available to retrofit a non-gun Sega projection game, your guess is as good as mine.

Seeing as how the bezel is really just screwed onto the monitor cabinet, I'm betting you can just interchange them.
