Because 'retard' is demeaning to special-needs children and adults. I think those who are directly involved with them catch on it more. Since I've started talking with POG, I'm choosing the words I type and say a little more carefully.

Now as you can see the noun form of retard has a meaning that has nothing to do with those who are mentally challenged. so you could say "The traffic retarded me, so I was late for work".
