I've done it once. Someone was going crazy about how Suikoden III had an extremely small run and that it was sold out almost everywhere. There were threads all over the place talking about how no one could find it. I did searches, and it seemed to be confirmed everywhere. So I went to my local Funcoland, where they did have a couple of copies left and got one - although it was used. I then sat back and waited for people to go crazy over it.

Needless to say that didn't happen. I believe Konami ran another order and everyone who wanted the game (see: not many people) were able to get a copy. It was the first and last time I purchased a game simply to "make money off it". :embarrassed:

I generaly dont lissen to rumors of rarity. Basicly I perfer to buy games new if the price is right or if its something I myself would consider a good game that I thought may be hard to find later on. Its only been recently that I have been able to do this as more often then not I just dont have the money to buy the stuff.

Yup. A few times actually. I was going to pick up Katamarai Damacy cause it was a "soon to be rarity" but by the time I was getting it I knew it wasn't gunna be rare. Any of the BlockBuster exclusives (besides freestyle street soccer) I picked up just because they are future raritys. I picked up steel battalion because it's awsome looking/could be worth some cash some day. Pokemon Box is a pokecenter exclusive, should be rare and that is why i picked up that one also (plus that bitchin' memory card!).

I bought SNES harvest moon, and N64 Harvest Moon, both on launch day...before they became a bitch to find. :)
Also bought ToeJam and Earl for genesis way back, I know that game is not really "Rare" but more "in demand", but it's still tough to score under 25 bucks....
Rarity is 2nd fiddle to me, though. Rarity just means I have to fork out more cash for games I want. I want to play, not orgasm over my rarity scores, although rarities like Texas Chainsaw Massacre(2600) and Panzer Dragoon Saga are nice ego +1's though ;)

has there been a new pressing of Katamarai Damacy?when it first came out it seemed most stores only had about three copies and now they are always in stock.

I tought Heaviweight Champ was rare, so I bought it at a flea market for 2€. Later I remembered that the rare one was Buster Douglas, the american version LOL

If it's a combination of good game and rare, I'll usually pay more for it.
Here are 5-10 games I've picked up for more than I usually would have paid because I wanted to play them, and they were on their way to becoming rare (at the time).
Rez
Katamari Damacy
Anything made by Atlus
Any Gamecube RPG

I haven't really bought anything on launch day as a rare prospect......but I have the luxury of living in a small city. People are always dumping NES, SNES, Genny and N64 stuff at the pawn shops and game shops. There's an Atari 2600 and about 150+ games that's been sitting in one shop for well over a half a year. I'll get around to buying it one day, but I don't HAVE to hurry. I have the luxury of time, because most people here obviously don't want that old crap. I buy harder-to-find N64 stuff on a fairly regular basis.....completes always turn up eventually.

Well I have purchased games because of them being rare, older games I mean.
But when it comes to new games and "Predicting" if they are going to be rare or not I haven't. I almost purchased a few copies, when they were sort of cheap, of the Zelda:Colector's Edition for the GC. That sucker brand new is definately going to be rare and more valuable in the future. Along with many others, that I really don't feel like mentioning right know because of laziness, for the GC that are going to be considered more rare.

I don't often buy things I think will be rare just for future rarity, but I have snagged a few to stockpile. Mostly Atlus stuff and obscure strategy RPGs, quirky puzzle games, or things I can get dirt cheap :)

Yes. At the end of the Saturn I bought Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, House of the Dead, and Magich Knight Rayearth for that reason.

I also bought Ys 4 and Dracula X when they were new for that reason.

Nah, not really. Sometimes I'll buy games a bit earlier than intended out of fear that they will be even more expensive and rare in the future, but that's about it. I don't care to buy games in hopes that I can make money in the future; I'm just scared of having to fork out an arm and a leg later on to get a game I really want.

I usually pick up the games from the Future Rarity! threads also, there usually one $20 or $30 bucks. I picked up go! go! Hypergrind cause it was a 'future rarity' also.

I bought Castlevania Chronicles on launch day. I knew from the start it was gonna be a rare item ppl would kill for just cuz of the classic 2-D Castlevania gameplay that's apparently never coming back in this day and age.

Sorta...

I bought Katamari Damacy sooner than usual because I feared it would be harder to find later on. I don't care about value though - I bought it because I wanted it, it looked like fun, and I didn't want to risk not being able to get one or having to pay excessively high prices for it down the road.

Even if it has been reprinted, I can't see it being all that easy to find six months or a year from now.

I will if it's cheap enough. I bought Ico brand new for $10 and Katamari for $20. Donkey Konga was on my top of my wishlist the second the Japanese version came out because I knew it'd become Samba-esque soon. Same with Taiko. I'll buy that too. But those are more because I just like fancy packaging. PACKAGING WHORE!!! :D

Let's see..Oh, yeah. Also the Pokémon Box I ordered even though I don't play Pokémon just because not everyone will have it sometime down the line. Some Halo 2 DVD and controller from Best Buy. A copy of the original Pre-LIVE Tetris Worlds because well, now all you see is the LIVE version and the Two-pack. The Pre-PC version of Cube SC2 because I didn't want to take a chance. I should really do the same for the other two versions. A $5 brand new copy of Hey You, Pikachu! from EB...

I've purchased numerous old PC games because of the likelihood that I might never see them again and might one day seek to aquire them, even if it might be a while before I actually get around to playing them. But when I do this, the games have always been cheap and have always been of some interest to me.

If I had KNOWN that Atari Anniversary for GBA was gonna be discontinued and so sought after, I'd have picked it up one of the 10 times I saw it in the stores. THEN when I finally want it so badly, it's gone.

I hear there's gonna be another Atari release for the DS. If it has Tempest, Breakout and Asteroids, I'll be happy. If not, I'll still have to find a copy of the GBA version. *sigh*

Yeah, I have got a few games at the circuit city sale just for that reason. Though they were all only five dollers.

I have paid way too much for some stuff, sure.

I never have bought a game because I heard it was rare (I've said "I'll go buy this" for at least three games here on the Roundtable, but never did so - Disgaea, Katamari Damacy, and something else), and I hope that I never will. If I buy something, I buy it because I want to play it.

Why?

These things baffle me.

The only game I ever baught due to future rarity was Kakuto Chojin, and of course the game is anything but rare.

All the rare games I have (mostly Saturn stuff & Spider-Man for 32X), I baught brand new usually on launch day simply because I wanted the game to play it. I had no idea those games would one day be rare, and I wouldn't have (& still don't) care. I buy the games I want to play.

Mmmm since i collect, i check alot if it's rare or not, why, cause i want the rarer ones first and then i can still get the common ones easily.Ofcourse when i see a common cheap i'll buy it too,but rares make me want them more.My collection is growing and growing and i'm glad to say that half of it is rare!

Ditto. When you like RPGs you kinda have to do that. I'd rather buy a potential rarity now and play it later, then wait and get ass raped by another Suikoden 2 or Panzer Dragoon Saga.

But I don't buy rare games to resell.

I bought kakuto chojin for xbox when it was announced that they were recalling it...

Me, too. It had already been recalled and the price came up at .01 at the local mall EBgames, and the nice girl sold it to me for that, even though that was the code for "pull if off the shelves now."

Hoo-ray

Also got Cubivore for $20, but it isn't worth much more than that. Paid $50 for a sealed copy of Last Blade for the UK NGPC, but it's not worth much more than that, either. Bought a couple of Stretch Panics cheap, and several of those X-Box and N64 BB exclusives.

Cheers
