I was just wondering. They have about 10 PSOne w/screen combos at Wal-Mart here selling for $100 a piece. I'm thinking of picking one up. What say you all?

Not sure about the quality, but you can get them (including the PSOne system) for much less than that on eBay.

I have enjoyed the hell out of mine. But thats becouse I can play it at work. If you need a new PSone I'd say go for it, but if you only want a screen I'd hold off.

Oh the quality of the screen if very impressive.

I'd say the PSOne w/screen wouldn't be worth $100 Canadian...much less US Dollars.

A while back my local Best Buy had a few for $60-70/each...they seem to have disappeared.

Definitely watch eBay for that if that's the price you're getting.

As for RGB/no RGB, the answer is most definitely not RGB. Here's some words I've stolen from a rather badly written Epinions review:

The screen plugs into the system via A/V cable hookup built right into the base for the screen and for the screen to stay on the system there are 2 little poles coming out of it that slip right into the holes in the back of your PSone the screen fits really snug in there so there is very little chance that the screen will slip off. But no you cannot hook the little screen up to any other video source except something that hooks up via 1/8" jack and of course the only thing to use this is Sony's own line of digital camera's and camcorder's.

All in all this is not a bad buy and since it is the official Sony screen your guarenteed a good brand. But if you go with Interacts screen you can hook that thing up to anything that supports A/V jacks this includes things like VCR's, DVD players and things of that nature. So basically it's up to you buy Sony to get the name and official look or go for versatility and go with Interact. Both of them have very good resolution and trouble free operation.

I've got one for sale in the b/s forum for $60 with the official carrying case and third party car adapter (which is far less clunky than Sony's). Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

That's interesting, because I just happen to actually have a Sony DV and a Sony Digital 8 camcorder!

They're wrong about this one, you can hook anything that uses a standard RCA AV, you just need to get a cord from RadioShack, it would be the same one you use to hook up the mini-plug camcorder to the TV. It works, I was using mine as a TV for a while(using a VCR as the Tuner), now I have my spare Turbo-Grafx and Genesis hooked up to it through Pelican switchbox. The Turbo Grafx games look great on that screen, kind of like a giant Turbo Express :D

It's not a full 640x480 resolution, is it? If not, it can't display all the pixels in high-res games. Granted, there aren't a lot of PSX games that run in that res, but it's something to consider.

The TurboExpress, advanced as it was, had the same problem with low-res TG16 games.

My bad quote earlier aside, I'm pretty sure it isn't 640x480.

I picked one up used (PSone/screen combo) at Gamestop for $70 a couple of months ago (complete in box, plastic still taped over the screen). While it's not high resolution, it is entirely serviceable as far as I'm concerned. It can be a little hard to read text in, say, Colony Wars, but I suspect that any small text is hard to read on a screen this size.

I wouldn't have paid any more than I did pay for the combo pack, however, especially without checking the screen for dead pixels (which I've read is an occasional problem with the screens). If you go the ebay route, make sure you ask the seller if there are dead pixels.

I occasionally like to balance the thing on my stomach and play stuff while watching TV in bed. My wife seems to think that's weird, though.

Ah, what does she know.

Tell her that round midriff isn't the result of eating too much pie...it's just natural when you're an oval-skewed spheroid.
