While looking (without any success) for a PS2 DVD driver to download, I found this site that clearly explains how to tell which version of PS2 you have:

For example, I have a 30001, and it's Version 4.

Hmmm my Ps2 only have 8 case screws and has a serial number that starts with U2, I dont think it's entirly accurate.

i don't remember my serial number, but i do know that i have a version 4-R. i guess the 5-R is more common, but here I bought a 4-R, accidently busted it (back when i was bootlegging, i was a cheap punk and was playing burnts by opening up my ps2, and my ps2 dropped while it was opened up). i did the wal-mart swap and ended up getting another 4-R

I have a 30001, and it's Version 4.

Same here.

Thanks for the link. Until I saw that, I took a wild guess that my PS2 was a version 2 or maybe a 3, and I based that theory off the fact that I got it right when TRU got the PS2 back in stock in early 2001 after the infamous launch shortage.
