Hey gang!

Well, "live and learn" is the motto of this month's Mystery Sound (http://www.digitpress.com/mystery/) contest. In the past, I've used a few clearly obvious sound effects. I've also used some more obscure tunes as well. But I've always, ALWAYS gotten at least a dozen correct answers.

This month, I got ONE correct entry. :eek 2:

I honestly didn't think this month's sound was THAT obscure, but apperently I was way off base. (I knew I was in trouble when JOE himself asked "What the hell is that?") So, you have my word that next month's will be a bit more mainstream, just to give everyone a fighting chance next time. But, until that gets posted, here is the winner this time around:

WINNER: Keith Harris
NUMBER OF CORRECT ENTRIES: ** 1 **
MYSTERY SOUND: The "descending ducks" from the arcade game "Carnival"

I'll be posting a new game soon. And I promise you, more of you will be able to ID it. 8-) Thanks and congrats to Keith!

And I was thinking games that had you skidding on ice. Damn, a bit off this time. :) Congrats Keith!

congratulations :)

@sniderman

if you really want to make the contest more fair and chances for everyone more equal you should switch from 8bit/80s arcade -only (i'm not sure if that's true but the majority of the sounds fit into that category) to a mixture of 8/16/32bit sounds and 80s/90s arcade games (although in fact i'd even prefer NO arcade games at all, you know, it's impossible to find arcades here in germany and that really really limits my chances)

Actually, I've been running this contest for years, and I *do* mix it up. Older stuff, newer stuff, consoles, arcade games, etc. The only thing I've never done is handhelds. So I do try to mix it up. I don't expect the younger crowd to be able to ID the opening riff from Dig Dug, for example, but most of us over 30 would get that immediately. And, I daresay, many of us older folks would have trouble IDing sound effects from some of the newer stuff.

Heck, I've had music from Sega CD games - not exactly a commonly-owned system - and *still* got a bunch of correct entries.

Ergo, I try to cover all of the bases for young, old, overseas, arcade-centric, NES and earlier, NES and later, etc. This month, however, it was just a bit TOO obscure.

No worries, next month I'll use the overland theme from Zelda.

(I'm kidding.)

May I recommend the main theme from Super Mario Bros. as well?

That's funny. I thought it was the chocobo theme.

Nice job. The carnival for the intellivision? Or is the arcade version different? I played the intellivision one a couple months ago... I wouldnt have won even if I did listen to the mystery sound though. So the prize should be 12 times better this time right?
