Gamecube tolerance to disc scratches

I bought Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero for $15 each, and although I plan to swap the cases with new ones eventually (used DVD type cases are ugly and scratched up looking in the clear cover part), I thought the discs were in mint until I got them home and examined them quite a bit more. There are some tiny scratches on them that I didn't notice when examining them in the store (must have been the lighting). One has quite a few in a small spot, but you can only see them if you hold it at a certain angle. How does the Gamecube handle scratches?

Either way, I regret buying both, when for only $5 more (each) I could have probably purchased both new (albeit 'PC' titles). But since they are 'PC' titles, the value is obviously low and should have waited. Hindsight is always 20/20.

THe Gamecube is very good at reading games, even if there a scratches. The games should work fine.

I haven't seen any scratched games yet, it seems the games themselves may be more resistant tos cratches at well.

I've had some games come my way that were scratched to hell, but worked with no problems, so I think gamecube's scratch handling is really impressive. no need to worry

Well, my friend's brother has games that are just completely scratched to hell and back. It really does look like he took sand paper and just started rubbing away on it. But besides that, the games work fine... most of the time. Considering the condition they're in, it's great. From time to time, it goes to the "Disc cannot be read" screen, but you can just fix that by opening and closing the GameCube.

I bought a used copy of Wave Race Blue Storm from ebgames.com and it looks like hell. It goes beyond scratches. The center part looks weird and discolored in places (I don't even know how to describe it), but the game runs fine. Seems like the GameCube is pretty good at reading anything that's thrown its way.

I just recieved a sealed game in the mail that for some reason had a decent sized scratch right through one side of the disc. I was scared it wasn't going to read but I popped it in and it worked perfect. I love GameCube. :)

Yeah, I've never heard any horror stories about gamecubes dieing or not reading discs. In fact, someone on my floor just had their xbox die, but nintendo outputs some quality machines, for sure.

They should start making CD players or the little laser mechanism for CD players on the side just to make extra money. Obviously there are LOTS of manufacturers out there that could take a class or two from Nintendo. My son has lots of games for the cube. Some are so scratched, I am afraid to even look at them in fear of scratching them some more with my stare. Yet the games have NEVER given us any problem. My hats off to the people in Nintendo, they really do know how to build a good system. My son has even dropped the cube twice from about 4 feet up and the damn things still goes on. Once it happened while I was playing a game, and it didn't even skip! Now if only the damn little reset and eject/ON buttons would keep from getting stuck when pressed down. Oh well...

Sorry, that sucks. Nothing bothers me more than scracthed CD'S!!
That's why I only buy NEW! Well, with CD'S.

Yeah, this probably happened if the disc itself popped out of it's center holder.
I can't stand it when I buy a game and shake it or something and hear the disc iteself fumbling around in the case.

I got two loose GameCube games with the used GameCube I bought this past summer, and while both are scratched up quite a bit, I never had any problems playing them. Likewise, a couple of the games we bought new are quite scratched up now thanks to my 10-year-old sister-in-law. :P They still work fine too.

I've only had one DRE with the cube and thats with my unscathed Eternal Darkness. Thought the game was just fucking with me. Other then that I've never had a problem with CDs scratched or other wise.

I remember reading a post by someone who said they had a GC game that looked like it had been dragged through a battlefield, yet played fine.

I have one GC disc that's pretty scratched up, and for the most part, it plays on my GC just fine. Sometimes I get a DRE trying to play it, and in that case I just remove the disc and put it back in, and after that it usually works fine.

I've had a couple of DREs that I've forgotten about, but those were most likely flukes (and not the parasitic kind)... my Animal Crossing disc, having been used every day since 17th Sept 2002, has given me 3-5 at most, and all of those times I only had to reset the system.
