Some kind soul scanned May 1982 Vol 1, No. 3 issue of Electronic Games and posted it on usenet. Thought I'd share it out if anyone's interested. Fun reading in all it's 1982 golden age glory.

Hey now, hold on a second! In the preview for Donkey Kong (damn this is an old issue) it says that the main character's name is Mario! I had always read in game history articles that he was originally known as Jumpman, and it wasn't until later that he became Mario. Could someone set me straight?

Yes the "Jumpman" really is Mario (his first appearence in any game), I'm trying to remember where I read when they started calling him Mario. I'll look into that question.

Oh, and thanks for the scan in of this maganize - I've been buying them again on Ebay ever since my mom thru out my EGM collection many years ago. O_O

Well, that's pretty simple. Donkey Kong was released in 1981, DK Jr. in 1982. By the time DK Jr. came out, Jumpman was renamed Mario. So, sometime in 1981 or 1982 the name change occured, maybe even by the time NoA received the Donkey Kong cabinets (that's what I heard anyway -- that Nintendo of America didn't want to keep the name Jumpman and got their inspiration from NoA's original East Coast landlord).

Funny, I always thought that I was on the outskirts of gaming with my O2 when I was a kid. There's quite a bit of O2 coverage in this issue, so I guess that I wasn't as alone as I thought LOL .

Bill Kunkel (who posts here occasionally, by the way) will be the first to tell you that the Odyssey folks took EG much more seriously than some of the others did right off the bat...and their cooperation and access were therefore rewarded with copious coverage. I always liked that about EG.

Of course, it could just be a sinister connection between the Odyssey team and entities whose initials are EG. Always worked for me.

FUN FACT: As a kid, I always used to sign my name on homework, etc. with the little "EG" symbol Electronic Games used. At the time, it seemed pretty darn cool. LOL

That was a lot of great info for such an early issue. I'm used to mags from that era being little more than pamphlets practically but this one was a monster! Great issue!

Also note they say Mario is a carpenter in that article...I wonder how many years of training it takes to go from carpenter to plumber??

I had a friend who did that. ;) Well, he picked up one, business was slow, so he learned the other so he could make more money. He said that he was in school, taking classes and doing a aperenticeship for two years for each one.
